Hey all im just wondering what you guys think to my colour scheme for my sniper (ill include pictures of my basic sqaud scheme) more importantly the cammo on the cloak (the cammo doesnt really matter on the basic gaurdsmen right?)

anyway, less talking more pictures ^^ (i wont include a sargent because being honest, there embarising)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
i havent put any real bolt gun metal on the sniper or commander because
1) hes a tyrant
2) likes the finer things in the imperium

and the sniper because
1) shiny things mean being a target (hence soldiers have dulled watchs instead of the normal shiny glass)
2) the hive world they come from is dark with a high ozone content (dark/breathable but warm)

im quite nervous about the cammo on the cloak so please be kind

I am hesitant to comment too harshly on anyone's painting skills as my skills are horrible...but the colors on the cloak are a bit bright for a sniper IMHO, however, it doesn't look like you have put a wash on any of your figures, and that would help to tone down the colors and to give the models some depth. Also, I see some mould lines and the gun barrels could use some drilling. But all in all, the patern of the camo on the cloak looks ok, and I'd say you're off to a good start!

*edit* Also, try using the "macro" setting on your camera, and not using the flash, you'll get better pics! Cheers!

lol x) the problem is it was 2 am and i dont get much llight in my room when i took them x) i know i had problems with the lighting and it was on macro but like i said the lights screwie, and im a little ashamed but i dont really know the ammounts i should use to wash them ^^ its a bit of a pain ^^

unforcently i cant really do anything about the drilling until my brother gets his finger out his... anyway the sheds a tip and i know about the lines i can forcently do something about them, ive got very fine files and the colour scheme is quite dark but i cant betray it without natural light or any white paper x) (well i know the ice blue on the pants and arms is a bit bright)

I like the color scheme, just it might be a little bright for a dark world.

Only other thing, which is just something that real armies do, is they avoid actual black, as it actually stands out in the dark. Maybe a really dark blue would fit in. Don't go repainting though, it looks great.

And finally, a wash on the faces that darken it make it look more real in my opinion, but, if they come from a dark planet, maybe not fitting with the fluff.

I feel for you with lighting problems! Especially in winter, I don't get home until well after dark, and I don't have much in the way of good lighting at home. As for the washes, I had never used them untill a few months ago, and I was amazed at how easy they are to use, and how forgiving they are of overuse, or underuse! Start with a small area or a model you are going to repaint anyway to get some practice, and just slather on some wash, I suggest Badab Black or Devlan Mud to darken the model. It will really bring out the creases in faces and shadows in cloth and armor! Then, if you are looking to brighten up the raised areas, just a quick highlight over the dried wash, and you're golden!

*edit* I like your Sergeant!

thank you this is going to sound noobish (well really i am) do you make or buy washs? ^^ i used watered down dark flesh with the sergent, and watered down chaos black with the sniper and thats pretty much the main colour scheme for all my gaurdsmen, even my vendetta pilots execpt there armour is a mix of mithril silver and ice blue, the same colour i used for my grey knights power weapons

i didnt even paint my sergents eyes

Well, there is a really great recipie and instructions for making washes here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page and I have every intention of making my own at some point, but for my initial use of them, I bought some. Mostly because I didn't know what to expect. From now on, as I really get ito the point where I'll need to paint more and more as my conversions are getting done, I'm going to make my own as I see myself using a lot of the wash. Also, as someone eluded to, on a "dark" planet, most people won't have tanned faces, they'll most likely be fairly pale. Hope all this helps, and trust me, this is the best site I have found for tips and tricks for pretty much anything Warhammer 40K related! I had been out of the wargaming scene for over a decade, and dreaded getting back into it as I didn't know where to go to get information...then one fateful day, I stumbled upon this site. My life and work habits have never been the same since!

Well, like I said before, you're off to a good start! The camo is great for a dark world, and I can't wait to see how the rest turn out!
