Subject: Wood Elf 3000 points - final draft (hopefully)

Stubborn Eternal Guard

Well with my aim to complete my army by mid March (collecting at least... painting will take a bit more time) I thought it would be time to tweak my list from the previous couple of threads I had, I think after reading many, many battle reports the Noble on foot with dawnspear would be dropped don't think the chance of making it harder to hit for the enemy worth the point investment!
Would also like to thank Boogeyman as I have basically stolen his Highborn on dragon build, weighing it up the d6 poison attacks from the spites would be worth more than the one additional killing blow attack.
Also noticed my list had little in the way of dealing with A-Bombs or hydras (even trolls would be a problem) so worked in the Banner of Eternal Flame and Ruby Ring of Ruin for some flaming attacks.
As always comments and criticisms appreciated
Highborn - forest dragon, Spear of Twilight, Murder of Spites, Stone of Crystal Mere, Light Armour, Charmed Shield (558)
Noble - BSB, Asyendi's Bane, HoDA, Seed of Rebirth (140)
Lvl 2 Spellsinger - Dispel Scroll, Ruby Rung of Ruin (175)
Branchwraith - Cluster of Radients (90)
12 Glade Guard - muscian/standard, Banner of Eternal Flame (172)
12 Glade Guard - muscian/standard (162)
28 Eternal Guard - Full Command, Warbanner (391)
11 Dryads - Bracnh Nymph (144)
6 Treekin (390)
6 Treekin (390)
2xGreat Eagles (100)
Treeman (285)
total points = 3000
Spellsinger and BSB with the EG. any other thoughts?

I was trying to figure out what the deuce your EG unit was there for, but then realized it's a "bunker" for the BSB and mage. Normally I don't hold with EG, as they just die in unholy droves, poor sad mooks... However, with two blocks of 6 treekin, a lord on a dragon, and a treeman, it looks to me like you have enough big threatening targets to distract your opponant from that block, and let you get the EG in against units that they can take on. Like Imperial skirmishers. Or Gnoblars.
You are sadly light on shots, but oof. 18 s5 attacks with thunderstomps is a bad day for anyone when you get into combat.
I take it the eagles are for WM hunting. I should experiment with them, but on paper they look... less than good.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

I've found a ancient to be much better then a lord on a drgon. Plus eagles are all but worthless now save maybe for a mount. The treekin will do a lot of damage. I also the like the tarpit idea for the EG. Pretty good but I would change a few things.

I like it. There's a nice spread of different units that are useful on the field. Also good going on trying a dragon list. Would be interested to see how this pans out in practice.

I like it too, I think you have enough choices to make it difficult on your enemy to prioritize his targets. I really like that you have a highborn on a dragon leading them.
I've been staring at it for 10 minutes now trying to figure out what I would change. My personal opinion is that there are too many trees, but I understand they fill the void that the wood elves can't.
So after all that staring the only thing I can think of changing is combining the glade guards into one unit. I would like the eternal flame to affect all my shots.
For the hundred points, I think the great eagles can still be effective at helping manage your opponents movement and if there is a target of opportunity, then they will both just have to attack it.

I know there are many more practical builds than having a Lord on Dragon, but have my heart set on a dragon for my force, hence why no Lvl 4 spellweaver or ancient, I am not looking to be uber competitive just want a list I like and will have fun with.

Yeah I was thinking my Flaming unit should have more shots, the only thing I may change is taking out the Dryads for more GG but will see how the first couple of games go.

Would you just have your branchwraith running alone then? They are pretty tough. You could beef up your gg unit and still add some stuff to your branchwraith?

You know I forgot about my branchwraith If I drop both the Drayads and the Branchwraith I would have loads of points for more GG, but will wait and see.

The words "Wood Elves" and "Uber competitive" don't exactly fit together right now. The theme is Dragon, stick with it. But having Gladeguard as "tarpit" won't happen, as they will simply die in droves. Maybe they won't be fleeing immediately (if your BSB lives) but the unit itself will be losing every single combat as elves die in disgusting numbers.

If you have your heart set on a lord on a dragon then go for it. I still really love my dragons but I dont use them as much as I use to. Maybe in time Ill come back around.

I know this is a sad fact about Elves and their life expectancy but if my EG are ever alone I will hang my head in shame for they should never be too far from friendly trees for a little bit of help. I really don't expect EG to win battles on their own but can be handy for their static Res, could throw a combat for my treeman or Treekin in my favour.

That is true, but they will also contribute so much CR loss with their deaths that even a timely arrival by treemen could spell doom for two units rather than one.

Each unit looks to be well-tuned, to me. I'm not sure about the spear of twilight on the highborn, there may be a better weapon for him.
As far as overall effectiveness, I would be sorely tempted to try out this list at 2500 points by simply dropping the dragon, and saving it for 3K.
The reason I suggest this is that, in practice, I play very few 3K games, and have noticed this is true for others as well. 2500, however, is much more likely.
You'd be 58 points under, and dropping the branchwraith gives you another 90 (you could swap the branch nymph over to a regular dryad to keep a unit size of 12). That's 148 points that you can use to turn your Lvl 2 spellsinger into a Lvl 4.
Personally, I think this would be a much more competitive list, whereas the list as it stands looks fun and awesome, but might not be as effective. Worth thinking about! Even if you don't decide to go this route, I would try to make a 2.5K list. I love including "fun" units at the higher point levels that I can't afford at lower ones, and totally support your having the dragon at 3K. But for 2.5K he'll be over 20% of your points if you include him, and I'd really love to see a spellsinger with access to the lore of beasts or life in there, upgraded from the level 2 you have now. His extra magic defense (+4 to rolls) will help make up for losing cluster of radiants, as well.

While that is sound advice, I can't help to think that he would be losing the one thing he really wants in the list, the dragon. I also thought that it is a 25% limit for lords and heroes, so at 2.5k he can have up to 625 points which his highborn on dragon is less than.

You definitely have a point boogeyman, just figured I'd put it out there!
By the 20% comment, I was just emphasizing what a large chunk of the army it was, I forgot that I'd probably be confusing everybody since everything is done by percentages now...

That is what we are here for.
You also make a good point that if that highborn and dragon are taken out then he loses 20% of his army and his opponent gets a big chunk of vps.

Also just to note- I didn't realize this was WombleJim's list when I first posted, since he changed his avatar (of course, I'm noone to talk, I did the same!).
I knew he has been planning for some time to include a dragon, so if I'd noticed that I might not have posted the above... although, I'd still be interested to see what you have in mind for 2.5K, WJ!

Thanks for the advice guys, Your idea for 2.5k RiTides is probably the best idea to keep the list viable and doesn't impact on my wallet too much and it looks pretty solid (will drum up a list shortly)
I do agree that a dragon is only viable at 3k games and higher so I am resigned to not having him for smaller games
Glad you like the Avatar boogyman , been meaning to change it for a while (somehow a space marine didnt feel right while I am getting back to fanatasy )
right now to get started on 2.5k list!
