OK, so I haven't played since 4th edition, back when Lizardmen were like unstoppable. I see a lot has changed since then. These are the models I resuced from my parent's basement recently for my army.

all models are 4th edition

20 temple guard
40 sauraus warriors
40 skinks
4 Krox
3 salamanders
2 x slaan mage priests
8 cold one riders (these are my only new models)

I also have some champions and skink mages and such mixed in there.

I am looking for a well rounded army. I think I need a hero on a carnosaur, maybe a steggadon, and then some more rank and file lizards.

Suggestions?

well today I bought the following:

1 box of temple guard

1 box of saurus warriors

1 carnosaur with a champion rider

1 stegadon

I think my new strategy will be maximize magic, have a slaan and then several skink shamans.

1 Slann by himself can and usually will use all your dice, its nice having a Skink Priest as a backup but you don't really need any most casters than that.

Lizards are very solid in 8th, they have solid blocks of infantry which are tough to break and Slann are now the best magic users in the game (special characters aside). Unfortunately big monsters did take a bit of a hit, the Carnosaur and Stegadons are cannonball magnets and can't run through units like they used to. They are certainly still usable but I would recommend more than 1 Stegadon if thats the route you want to use. What you have is plenty to get a 2400pt list going, a Slann + 16+ TG and a couple of decent sized Saurus blocks with support from Skinks and Salamanders is a good start to any Lizardmen list.

I was just thinking that with the channeling ability I can send out my tiny canon fodder mages and use them for the mage priest to channel spells through while the mage priest sits back in his unit of temple guard, which are buffed, immune to psychology and stubborn so they won't be going anywhere.

The problem is I really want two magic users for my strat. I want one using life magic for buffs and then I want one using some sort of attack magic to do damage to the enemy. I mean life magic allows you to save against miscast and it allows to buff my units with a +4 Toughness which is nice, but against an army like Chaos I need to dish out damage as they all have good armor and also dish out tons of hand to hand (well I played against Khorne last).

I think I am going to rematch my friend who is playing Chaos. Though this time I think he is taking Slaanesh mages with his Khorne bad ass troops in chaos armor. To be honest, I feel a bit intimidated. The good news is, he won't have a lot of shooting attacks against me.

I was thinking about putting a Saurus hero on the Carnosaur and giving him the always strikes first weapon, and maybe a ward save or something else for items. Then doing rank and file troops of sauraus and skinks and a mage or two with one being a mage priest in some TG.

Thoughts, suggestions?

If you do use an attacking strategy with magic law of heavens is awesome! Chain lightning and comet of cassadora are brutal!
My friend always has a slann with law of heavens and two disiplines (or whatever theyre called). He uses the Loremaster one to gain all spells of heavens and the one that gives an extra power dice to every spell (this truly is brilliant if you cast multiple spells per phase.
He also uses Chakax in the same unit. This is an great addition to that unit for not too much points cost.

The thing is lizardmen have low initiative so they always fight last. So I need to either pile on the ranks or use some salamanders/magic to destroy the enemy from afar.

Thanks for the tips. I was also looking at light magic I think there is a spell that casts WS10 I10 on any unit, and a unit of sauraus warriors or TG with WS10 I10 sounds like it could whoop some butt in hand to hand.

To be fair that's pretty much their only drawback in combat though! Temple Guard are I2 which is fairly standard, but i wouldnt really worry anyway, lizardmen have multiple high strength attacks with good Strength and they have good toughness and armour. Chuck 'em into combat and they win ALOT! Especially temple guard!
Id say one of the few opponents with better combat ability are Chaos typically!

Yeah that is who I am worried about is the chaos guys, and I am rematching the chaos guy again in a week or two. He will have warriors and knights and a champion riding a Juggernaut and this time he will be taking chaos magic...

Well I found a guy locally that is going to get rid of his whole lizardmen army. I think I am going to buy it, and it would probably put me around the 8,000 point range with his stuff + my stuff so after I acquire it, I should be able to field any combination of lizardmen with one exception. He has no terradon riders, and well, I can't honestly say that I would want a unit of those. Not sure how effective they are.
