Ellyn crept through the rubbles of Cyron I’s capital, careful not to disturb any rocks or stones. Her Cameleoline cloak reflects her surroundings, making her almost invisible to the naked eye. Like all Eldar Rangers, Ellyn is a master of stealth and a skillful sharpshooter. She could blend into any environment, infiltrate deep into enemy territory, and pick off enemy commanders over miles away.

Up ahead, a flicker of movement caught Ellyn’s attention. She glance to her left and make out a thin outline of Korin, another Ranger, who was covering the squad’s left flank. Korin looks back at Ellyn and gave a silent nod. He noticed it too. He orders Ellyn and three other Rangers to spread out.

Ellyn slowly raise her long rifle and peer down its the scope. Within her crosshairs, she could make out a large bulky bipedal contraption moving through ruins. ‘Wait, I’ve seen those before,’ thought Ellyn, ‘those are Tau Battlesuits. But what are the Tau doing out here?’

Suddenly, screams of fellow Rangers ring in the air. The ground becomes alive with Kroot Warriors bursting out of hiding and leaping on their prey. Ellyn drop her long rifle and spun around. In one smooth motion, she drew her Shuriken Pistol and fire point-blank into the nearest charging Kroot. Sharp shuriken discs slice through the alien’s neck, decapitating the Kroot Warrior.

“Ellyn, help!” cries a familiar voice. Ellyn turns to her left just in time to see a Kroot slam the bladed tip of his rifle through Korin’s chest. Ellyn tries to save Korin, but a sharp blow knocks her from behind. She stumbles to the ground and notices a pair of talon feet belonging to a Kroot standing behind her. The Kroot Warrior crouches and pins Ellyn to the ground.

Ellyn struggles to break free and looks back at Korin. The Kroot that stabbed Korin was now bent over, and tearing through Korin’s chest with its sharp beak. Korin whimpers in pain, but the Kroot Warrior ignores and continues devouring Korin alive. Ellyn shudders and looks over her shoulder. To her horror, her captor had bent over and was about to do the same.

Shas’el Tahoe was studying his Positional Relay when he notices flashing dots on this screen coming from one of his Kroots squads. Tahoe switches channels, and connects to the Kroots.

“Shas’el, we’ve caught five Eldar scouts along the southern perimeter,” reported Tarric, the Kroot squad leader.

Tahoe didn’t bother asking what became of Tarric’s prisoners. He already knew the answer and didn’t want to hear the grisly details. ‘More importantly’, thought Tahoe, ‘why were the Eldar this far North? Could the Eldar also be after STC? But why would the arrogant aliens bother with ancient Imperial technology?’

“Prepare an ambush along the southern perimeter and wait for my signal,” replied Tahoe, “We must make our friends feel welcome”.

Amid a ruin building, Eldrad his Dire Avengers held out against a group of a squad of Fire Warriors and a squad of Battlesuits. A steady stream of plasma pulse peppers the building’s walls. Two Battlesuits fires a barrage of missile straight into the second floor. The explosion shakes the building, causing the ceiling to collapse. Two Dire Avengers are crushed underneath.

“Ignorant monkeighs!” spat Eldrad, “Many battles we Eldar have fought and many of us have fallen. Just when our prize is within our grasp, these young foolish monkeighs dares oppose us?’

Eldrad silently meditates. His mind weaves through twists and turns of the Empyrean realm, honing in on strings of fate. He grasps those of the Fire Warriors and Battle Suits. With a light tug, he shifts them out of balance, sealing their doom.

“Dire Avengers, lay waste to these filthy monkeighs,” order Eldrad.

The remaining Dire Avengers spread out and unleashes a torrent of monomolecular discs into the air. Each finds their mark, piercing through Fire Warriors and Crisis Suit’s armour. Within seconds, the firing from the Fire Warriors and Battlesuits cease.

Eldrad stood up and survey the carnage. Body parts of Tau Fire Warriors litter the ground. The Battlesuits were pocketed with small holes, each seeping out blue blood. Euphoria washes over Eldrad with a sense of victory.

Suddenly, a dark shadow blots out the sun and encompasses the battlefield. Eldrad looks up. His eyes widens in disbelief at what he saw. A Tau Manta super-heavy dropship descends from the sky. Its heavy burst cannons rakes across the city, and seeker missiles shoots out from its prow, raining death and destruction from above. Dire Avengers dies left and right while Wave Serpent tanks are blown to smithereens. Two Fire Prisms focus their fire on the Manta’s command bridge, but their focused shot disperses off the Manta’s powerful energy shield. In response, the Manta fires two hypersonic projectiles from its heavy railguns. The two Fire Prisms are no match. They disappear in a cloud of dust. All that remains is two smoking craters.

“Withdraw!” Eldrad command his remaining forces.

Back aboard the Manta, Shas’el Tahoe was brimming with joy. ‘At last,’ thought Shas’el Tahoe, ‘another fragment of the Imperial’s STC in my possession.’

On top of the lower flight deck laid an Imperial coffin extracted from the ruins of Cyron I’s capital.

“Open it,” order Tahoe.

Two Crisis Suits grabs hold of the coffin’s lid from both sides and heaves it open. Shas’el Tahoe peers inside, but what he saw, he didn’t expect. What should have been a black box with a cog sealed on top was instead a smooth polished tablet with glowing Eldar ruins.

Tahoe gently lifts the Eldar tablet. Without warning, a burst of eldritch energy leaps out of the tablet into Tahoe. His body convulses, his head shakes, and then he blacks out.


EDIT: Corrections to Eldar Army List

Great report thanks for sharing. I like reading about Tau since I seldom, if ever, get to play them in my area. I think there might be one Tau player (and 3 Sisters players which is strange!).

Tau was my first army. It used to be popular in 4th edition, but all that changed once 5th edition came out. Now I hardly see them.

Good game. You did better with your Tau against Wade's mechdar than I did with my 12-fireknife Tau list. I'm impressed.

I hate eldar skimmers and those blasted holofielded prisms. I don't know how they did it, but I'm glad your kroots immobilised that prism. It's a good thing your army doesn't have psykers, else you would hate eldar even more.

Then again, now that you own his army, it'll make for some interesting battles between our armies.

Tau on Mechdar is always a cool fight! It's more of a real Sci-Fi battle. Nice report.

Nice battle report. I don't know if you're allowed to have 12 DAs in a squad, I think the limit might be 10. More importantly do you find the big DA squads are worth it? I've moved from 10-man squads with exarchs and bladestorm to 5-man squads. Oddly, I find it's actually easier to score if you aren't tempted to disembark too early, and it frees up points for more tanks.

After a brief exchange of e-mails, he noticed the mistake and gave me a revised version of the list his list. Original post has been edited.

Thanks for catching it! This game took place a year ago, so some of the details are a little fuzzy.

It is a shame more casualties could not be inflicted, for that would mean less enemies for the Imperium.

One little snag though... 'Mon Keigh' is a derogatory term used for humans

If Eldritch Storm is a magic shooting attack, Eldrad can't assault the gun drones after shooting down the Piranha in slide 118.

Yes he can. The gun drones count as passengers and the piranha their transport. You can assault the unit from the transport you just wrecked.

I thought Mon-keigh means any race that Eldar deems inferior. What's the derogatory term for Tau in Eldar?

"In the warhammer 40k universe, a derogitory term for Humans used by the alien Eldar.
Its origins stem from a race of sub-intelligent beasts who once enslaved the eldar and were later killed, and though associated most often with humans, it broadly represents any race which the Eldar deem worthy of extermination."

So yes, it could be used to describe the Tau...or almost any other race.

What rule makes this possible?

"... if a transport is destroyed by a ranged attack, the unit that shot it may assault the now disembarked passengers, if it is allowed to assault according to the assault rules."

P.33 SRB
"... a unit that fired in the Shooting phase can only assault the unit that it shot at ... (exception for multiple targets)"

Assaulting Multiple Enemy Units
"As you move assaulting models, you may find it is possible to reach other enemy units that are close to the one you are assaulting."

This would allow Eldrad to assault the drones, if he first declared an assault against another unit and was able to contact the drones within that assault move. But he wasn't able to do this, since the drones were the only unit in reach.

I believe this would let Eldrad assault the drones.

Whatever the majority agreement in regards to that discussion, it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game because as you can see in the picture:
