I have a difficult time painting kroot skin. Its not well defined like the ork features. How do you paint good skin. I'm talking tabletop however. Just a simple how to for basic skin that doesn't suck but looks decent. I'm painting my tau blood red and would like my kroot just a bit of a darker red. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would say start with the foundation red mechrite red, hit them with the GW Baal Red wash, then drybrush the skin a lighter red, maybe a 50/50 blood red, mechrite red mix. After that a final light highlight of blood red should give you a quick and easy red skin tone. If you think thats to light you could use Devlan Mud instead of the Baal red wash. Hope that helps some.

You could try this out, should be pretty easy and quick:
1. Paint all of the skin in Red Gore.
2. Do a heavy wash of Devlan Mud.
3. While the Wash is still wet (i.e. immediately after you've put it on) take a clean damp brush and run it along the raised parts of the skin; muscles, wrinkles, etc.
4. Let dry.
Essentially the wash will shade the folds in the skin a nice dark brown, while the raised portions will stay nice a vibrant. It's easy, quick and should yield satisfying tabletop results.

Is highlighting only painting the raised areas? I tried that with my orks and it didn't turn out very clean? I only know what highlighting is for armour. Is it exactly the same for skin?
Dawn- This sounds promising but does it yield a clean look? I'm actually looking for a clean tabletop look instead of the gritty looking model that has been to battle.

Actually what i meant to say was drybrush with the lighter red. It will make all the raised areas lighter leave nice shaded areas if you feel the areas dont quite blend very well you can add another watered down red wash.

Both sound promising. Are there any picture? None would be fine to. I'd just prefer not to waste a model or two as test models. Thanks for the help!

Try out a model yourself and post a pic for us. That way we can see what you did well or what needs improvement
You can always repaint/strip him if its very bad.

Thats the thing. I actually live in Hong Kong and its not very hot on the whole model/dyi products. (In all of Hong Kong there is only one model shop that caters more to fantasy players and locals. They aren't exactly the definition of lfgs or accommodating)
If no one posts a picture however i'll will definitely get one done in the next month or so and post a picture of it. School and all makes me really busy.

I'd suggest this process too.
Although I'd also paint the Rifles Tin Bits and then drybrush that with Mithril Silver, then wash the entire model so that the guns looks a-bit worn

Could this paint scheme also work with mechrite red/scab red? Those are the two closest paints i have to red gore.

How red do you want them, out of interest? I can show you devlan mud over mecharite red- not on Kroot but on elf robes, if that helps...

That would help a lot actually misguidance! Any red should do fine with my kroot. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh i also forgot to ask did you use the same technique mentioned above Misguidance?

Similar, yes.
These are my HE Archers:
The red on this was done with a base of mecharite red, washed with devlan mud, and then re-highlighted with mecharite red. The result? Very red elf-dresses, but the wash makes it less overpowering, and it's a darker red- so your Kroot won't look too overpowering! If you wanted to do another stage highlight, I would mix some blood red with the mecharite red and give the raised parts of the faces a dry-brush.

Those look great. I really like the tone of red on the cloaks.
Also, is highlighting skin the same as highlighting armour or do you paint the whole raised area?

And yeah, highlighting skin is the same as highlighting anything else- you look for the raised areas, and paint there.

Prime Rustoleum/Krylon Camouflage Brown, basecoat Mechrite Red and then apply a second coat of Red Gore or Scab Red. The Red Gore will get you to:
To darken further, wash with Devlan Mud or Badab Black
