Subject: 1000 point SM, vs. Orks. Da battle fer da big Lizerd!!
The sun beat down on the corrupted land, the once proud imperial landscape marred by dark chaos symbols that throbbed and twisted in the dying sunlight. It had rained recently, and large muddy puddles painted a dark brown sheen over the skulls of those who had been sacrificed to the Lords of the Warp. The fight for liberation had been brutal, entire regiments of imperial guardsmen being swallowed up in the chaotic melee of the hive cities.
Some returned, warped and twisted and tainted, to fight their former comrades.
Then had come the orks. Driven by savage bloodlust, they fell upon heretics and Imperials alike in a savage tide of green, and in the confusion, captured several prominent hive cities. The Planet of Reductus now finds itself locked in a three way stalemate, and even the aid of several space marine chapters has done little to aid the beleaguered imperial forces.
Ello dakka! Just got finished with an awesome game with dakkaflakka today. It was his first game, and, even though I had to go by turn 3, it was still a lot of fun.
So the game was seize ground, and the deployment was Spearhead.
My list was the following:
Captain Fire McFire Pants (Vulkan stand in) 190
TAC marines: ML, Flamer, Razorback with dozerblades. 215
Tac marines: MM, Melta, Rhino with dozerblades. 215
Sternguard x 5 1x combi-melta, 2x combi-flamer razorback with dozerblades. 185
Landspeeder with MM and Heavy Flamer 70
Vindicator with dozer blades. 120
1000
Flakka's list was something like this
Warboss Awesomness: Power klaw, udder gubbins. 85+
7 nobs wif gubbins 140+
20boyz: 2 big shootas Nob wif Power Klaw and boss pole 160
20boyz: same as dah udder boyz 160
Captain Fire McFire Pants stepped out of the Razorback's side hatch, and surveyed the surround in the fading half-light. His scouts had reported strange returns on their sentry servitors, and, weary of interminable waiting, he had decided to investigate himself. The rumbling of the tanks under his command thrummed in his veins. His vox popped, and he listened to the reports coming in from the Solomon's Light his command transport.
Orks had been sighted.
He primed his heavy flamer, watching small globlets of flame fall from it's cavernous mouth and pool at his feet, and flexed his gauntlet, the destructive energies of it sparking and crackling menacingly. He walked back to his Razorback, and sat next to Jormundae, his hands checking the intricate bolter and it's specialist ammunition. They said not a word to eachother.
Pants vocalized across the vox net, "hear me brothers! The orks seek to steal from the emperor's subjects, and by extension the Emperor himself! Let them hear our wrath in our bolters, and feel our fury in the fires of purgatory!" A low rumble of assent answered him across the vox. it would have to do.
Across the muddy field, Warboss Awesomness sniffed the air, and stared dimly at the base of a skull covered hill that had been the site of some sinister Chaotic ritual. Silhouetted against the light he could see a large shape moving amongst the bones. He turned to Gotsy, his spottah.
"wot's dat?"
"Wot... Dat fing over there?"
"Yeah"
Gotsy pulled out a long brass spotter scope, and after a few minutes of adjustments, answered "It's a big ol squig that is"
Awesomness mulled this over, sucking on a massive, unlit pipe, "I want it"
"Wot??"
"I said I wants it"
Gotsy paused, rightfully afraid of contradicting the boss whom he had personally witness beat a carnifex to death with it's own skull, and said anyways "But boss.. why..?" And was floored by a casual flick of the Warboss's Power Klaw. Bleeding from a massive gash across his head, Gotsy staggered to his feet. Sucking on his pipe thoughtfully, The huge ork replied "It's funny lookin" and said no more to the dazed nob.
Warboss Awesomness shifted his enourmous bulk as he scanned the field, "I want dat shiney stuff over dere too". He turned and faced his boyz. "Roight boyz! Yew lot lissen up! Dere's some shiney stuff over dere and a lizerd over dere and I wants it!" A grot squeezed through the boots of his nobs and reached Awesomness' feet. The huge ork hefted up the small creature by the neck and listened as it chattered in it's ear. He grinned. "And naow I gots some good news!" He paused for effect, then paused again to remember what he was saying. "There's some 'umies owt dere who are after me lizerd! Not just any umies do... Space marines! Let's get tah stompin!!!!" with a roar the Boyz rushed forward in the wake of the massive ungainly deffkoptas.
As an instructor, I kind of failed I'm afraid. Set up was a bit wonky, where we deployed our forces before setting up objectives. But basically the map was kind of set up with a big hill/ritual spot in the middle, and not much other terrain features to speak of other than some colums that were in the center of my deployment zone (bottom right corner) which we counted as difficult terrain, as well as the hill itself. We also forgot that a warboss allows one Nob squad to be counted as a troop choice
His deployment, what you can't really see (due to my terrible photography skills/ not realizing that the memory card had filled up until later) is over to his right are more boys and the other three Kans.
and mine:
The objectives were placed in the center of the table atop the hill, at the base of the hill in Flakka's quarter, one amongs the ruins that I deployed in, and the last on the far side of Flakkas half of the board, across the table from my units.
DakkaFlakka won the roll for going first, elected to do so, and split his forces. After his deffkoptas moved into sniping position on top of the hill via scout moves, one group started circling the hill along the short table edge, and contained in it a Kan squad in front, boyz after that, and the Nobz with Warboss behind them. The second group spread out, with a few boyz trying to constrain da big lizerd and the rest of the squad heading over do dah shiney stuff (a d20), also screened by a group of Kans. The deffkoptas fired, but, thanks to the cover provided by the ruined columns, no harm was done. Everything else ran, eager to get to grips with my space marines.
Koptas take aim
The horde approaches.
the flank attack (before being spread to coherency) AND YOU CAN SEE DAH LIZERD!!
Everything save my rhino moved 6 inches, while my rhino bolted 12 along the long board edge, towards the orks. While the landspeeder sped towards the kans of the other flank, the sternguard and Captain Fire piled out of their transport and unloaded on the deffkoptas, causing a single wound. The two razorbacks also fired at the defkoptas, reducing the squad to a single one wound model. Pulling over the rise, the massive demolisher cannon boomed, and took out 4 orks. (Kudos to DakkaFlakka for spreading out, and may the emperor damn my scatter dice to eternal torment for missing a juicy shot that would have hit two Kans and 4 boys). The Landspeeder penetrated at range, but only managed to stun one of the kans.
Brother klaedus stood with his fellows of tactical squad Alpha and primed his venerable Missile Launcher. The deadly weapon hummed as it deactivated the safties on the potent anti-tank Krak missile as he aimed across open ground at the massive Kans lumbering towards them. The missile howled as it streaked towards the ungainly walkers, and landed with a brilliant ball of flame hundreds of yards away
The tanks move out with all the grace of a wounded rhinoceros.
Inside of his razorback, McFire Pants listened to the tactical chatter, "say again recon gamma?" he subvocalized "did you say, a saurian deamon?" he nodded at the response, then switched to wide band frequency. "Astares! The orks have discovered some foul warp beast and are trying to capture it. Doubtless they will try to harness the power of the beast and use it against us! We must prevent them from capturing it! Kill it at all costs!
2nd Turn
Howling with pain, the remaining deffkopta flies to the top of the hill, passing its 4th consecutive dangerous terrain check, to get a shot at some vindicator side armour (I made a huge mistake in leaving that open) and both flanks moved, with his long side boyz spreading out more to claim both dah big lizerd and dah shiney bits. his short side orks moved, and ran, his whole force moving 7 inches (that's right, 3 squads rolled 1's on their run checks)
The shooting consists of Kans now on my side of the table taking shots at my sternguard squad, killing one, and the other group of kans firing and destroying the heavy flamer on my landspeeder. The deffkopta lined up it's shot, and whiffed terribly -snake eyes-
It kind of felt like this:
no matter how slow they run.. they still look cool
My movement phase saw my rhino bull rushing across the table to land itself on the center objective, where TAC squad beta piled out of their transport but unfortunately were unable to draw line of sight to the orks across the hill from them. Captain Pants' Razorback careened foreward 6" and pivoted, acting as a buffer between the leading ork elements and my marines, while the captain and his retinue of veterans moved foreward, ready to smite the onrushing orks.
my razorback walls up
Shooting saw the destruction of two Kans, one hit squarely by a demolisher round (that was supposed to hit two kans and two boys ) and the multi melta from the speeder. More fire from the sternguard finally felled the deffkopta, and heavy bolter and stormbolter rounds from the razorback and the tank killed a few orks that were getting ready to charge around the hill. The second razorback alongside the vindicator managed to kill 4 boyz that were holding the objective, and the line of boys thinned considerably. Klaedus whiffed again (I'm going to have to ing kill that guy... he never hits anything)
the holding line thins.
Unfortunately I had to go soon, so this was to be our last turn.
3rd Turn
Having slogged for most of the game, the orks were finally close to what they loved best: the brawl. The space marines had taken up positions around their tanks in the hopes that they would grant some protection. The grot pilots of the Kans sought to show them different. The kans and everything else on my side of the table moved towards my TAC and stern squads, while the lone Kan did nothing, standing guard over the shiney bits that the boss so desperately craved.
In the shooting phase, A great cry rose up from the orks. It was time for the Waaaagh!! (I had forgotten about this, and deployed my sternguard about 16 inches away from the orks... Stupid) Hustling forward, their bloodlust up, the orks sprinted towards their foes, ready to come to grips with worthy opponents. The Lone Kan fired at the landspeeder, whiffing it's shot.
Screaming with glee the kans Charged the razorback, and easily destroyed it, taking a tactical marine down in the catastrophic blast. Now it was crunch time, and we measured the distance from the leading ork model to my sternguard... 7". And so the assault phase ended for the orks.
Clambering over a steep scree slope, the marines of Betta squad hauled themselves up to the top of the evil hill/shrine and secured the objective there, the landspeeder, throwing caution aside, sped to the objective that the lone Kan was guarding, contesting it, and the razorback holding the second half of Alpha squad disgorged its contents mere inches from the orks that had, despite their losses, grimly held both of Flakka's objectives. Moving forward, the Captain and his men got closer to the orks that had so nearly managed to assault them.
(this shooting phase was brutal)
The shooting phase began with the roar of the demolisher cannon. The blast scattered backwards, and vaporised a member of TAC squad Alpha. Dazed but undetered, the survivors fired their bolters and brother Argos' flamer at the remaining orks. Supported by their razorback, all but 6 were slain. The twin combi flamers of the sternguard veterans were acompanied by Captain Fire's massive heavy flamer, and between them they killed twelve orks, while another four were slain by bolter fire from the rhino and remaining sternguard.
The orks who had so long held the lizerd tame finally fled, nearly to the edge of the table, ending the game.
Final score: Orks 0 Space Marines 2
Comments: I was able to be much more of a badass in my last turn than I would have been able to on a regular turn 3. I wouldn't have done something so stupid as to rush my sternguard a mere 2 inches away from his Kans if I knew i was going to be playing another turn, and same goes for the landspeeder. So basically I think that the short game length played out much better for me than for him, especially considering how bad his running rolls were. That said, I think I kept a better eye on keeping and taking objectives than DakkaFlakka did, as he seemed, in an appropriately orky way, to be much more concerned with killing my guys than taking objectives. This could have simply been a misinterpretation however.
All in all, it was a great game, and a very exciting one right to the end. It's the first time using Vulkan.. and now I know what all the hype is about! . For a first game I think he did really well, and I just want to say thanks (both to him, and you poor readers), and I hope I get to post more bat-reps soon!

Well playing the points level you guys played, the Ork player needed more then 2 mobs of boyz. But that was a fun read, and at least the Orks kicked some ass here and there

Nice Report the lists need some serious work. Try a big mek with a kff instead of the boss. Make sure your kans have all rokkits not mixed up weapons. Needs more boys. Good game

Drop the sternguard and try to find some points to replace it with 4TH/SS termies, 1 LC.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also a 10 man tac squad cant fit in a razorback - it only holds 6.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Orks need 3 units of 20 boyz, a KFF mek, and 2 squads of 3 rokkit killa kans. Also fill in spare points with a grot squad and loota squad, as well as PKs and big shootas.

I never put a whole TAC squad in a razor back, I had one squad with MM and melta in a rhino and one combat squad in a razorback.
And if I took the terminators, I wouldn't be able to have them in any kind of transport... is this really a good idea?
