Hey! Earlier, I asked this question, but I'm reposting because I was able to get a picture of what I'm looking for (see attachment.)

So, does anyone know what material they used to make this cool explosion?

Thanks in advance.

How to make this?

From what I've heard about this, it's clump foliage usually used for making trees stuck on rods and painted black and gray. GW had some in the Apocalypse books. It's a brilliant effect and use of materials.

Sounds right to me.
- You don't think it's possible to meet the same effects with cotton wool, do you?

Wool's too stringy. I suppose you could do it, but the time it would take would be maddening. I tried it for making even little smokestacks and it was awful.

Stretched cotton balls are good for billowing smoke clouds, not so much for an explosion in progress like this.

I had a feeling you'd say that.
- The thought was to maybe make it stiff without having it "implode" on itself, and hence adding the desired colors to it...

So... pieces of clump foliage glued on top of one another? Or One large piece trimmed? I could see that. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

My understanding is that its autumn clump foliage, held in shape by a wire armature + glue, and then sprayed black/gray. If you want a more 'fiery' effect, then do a gradient to the red color of the foliage.

For smoke, I have had some success making clouds of ultra-fine steel wool w/ a washer as a weight. Just make sure to spraypaint them really well, otherwise it scratches off the paint of your minis.

I think I mentioned this in your earlier thread, but as others have said, it's clump foliage glued to wire armatures and painted. I wish I could remember the thread to direct you to, but somebody used this method to add plumes of fiery exhaust to the rokkit packs of their stormboys and had WIP shots showing their painting method - maybe they posted a tutorial? If you start with a bright yellow and work it into deep reds near the recesses, then drybrush heavily with grays and black on the bulges, it gives a quite realistic effect.

I used clump foliage to get a similar effect on these firing rokkits:

I took a piece of wire and bent it to shape. Coated it in glue and rolled it in clump foliage. Then I primed it black which also helped adhere it together.

The concept would work on what you are after as well...

Ive seen a few cool explosion effects done with cotton wool. At my FLGS There is a particularly beautifully Done Tau Pirahna that has crashed and the explosion is done as rocks made of foam with cotton wool smoke trails.

I used the woodland scenics type foliage to do a similar effect. I used UHU multi-purpose glue to stick it down. I ahve tried using superglue before, but beware putting too much on the foliage. The heat generated by the superglue hardening can set fire to the foliage

Basic form before sticking the foliage on

Final effect
