Spawn.... They are giant creatures of flesh, bone, and talons, and are by far one of the most characterful units in the army.

But they are a terrible, terrible characterful unit. So how can we make them a good choice to take for the army?

Spawn: 55 pts. 0-1
(1-3 Spawn may be taken as a single Fast Attack Choice)
Unit Type: Beast
WS: 3 BS: 0 S: 5 T: 5 W: 3 I: 3 A: D6 LD: 10 Sv: -

Special Rules:
Fearless
Slow and Purposeful
Feel No Pain
Mindless
Fleet

What this does: It makes the Spawn a little hardier so that they aren't getting shot down instantly by anything that looks at them, and it also gives them a little bit more speed, with a possibility of charging from 18" away.

Not overpowered, but better and worth taking one or two.

Sounds good.

What about taking out the Slow and Purposeful rule?. I have never undertood the logic behind "Slow and Purposeful"+"Fast Attack".

Well see, Spawn have always moved only D6", and the Slow and Purposeful rule is what gives us that. I was thinking of cutting off fleet and giving them Cavalry charge range (12"), but then thought that that wasn't spawn like, either.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I think in the previous codex they moved as infantry. They just could not be transported inside vehicles. And they were demonic gifts, not Fast Attack. And they costed 20 pts, got 3+ armor save and two wounds. The rest of the statline was like yours, as far as I know. Ld9.

What am I missing? Did I get it wrong?

Heh, I clicked looking for Tervigon spawning.

You do realise that Beasts get Fleet anyway right?

and Slow and Purposfull means they strike at I1 in CC iirc

Did not know that fleet thing.

Also, I do not beleive that Slow and Purposeful strikes at I1. I think that most things that have Slow and Purposeful (I.E. Obliterators) have Power Fists, which strike at I1.

Well i think due to the fact that having SLow andPurposeful makes you count as moving through Difficult Terrain all the time, you count as Charging through Cover, thus I1 on the Charge... Kinda stupid but hell, there slow...
with a 12" Charge... and Fleet...

I'm pretty sure the Slow and Purposeful is because they're "Hurpa-Derping" their way across the battlefield.

It'd be nice to have a large pack of them being led on by a Junior Sorcerer or something. Of course I guess that's too similar to the Dark Eldar's beast pack.

I prefer the idea that Spawn are upgrades for standard CSM units. Keep their current stats, change type to Infantry, add a "Bulky" rule, and change Mindless to "If a Spawn model is left without any Marines to guide it, remove it from play. The closest enemy unit within 6" immediately takes 3 WS3 S4 attacks." similar to DE Grotesques.

But then all Marine Units that are using Spawn would have to be footsloggers.

Why? As an infantry type it can go in any transport, and the Bulky rule says that it takes up 2 spaces.
