I've been painting mini's on and off for a while. I've never been too interested in playing games with them (played a good bit of AD&D, though). Many years ago I attempted to paint a devastator squad and qot pretty discouraged. Well...I was driving around and what did I see but a GW store, newly opened in town. I went in and snooped around and ended up picking up a scout sniper squad to tool around with. I painted a few of them, and kind of got hooked on 40K. Well, I hadn't put much thought into gaming with 40k until now. Given the models that I've collected just for the purpose of having fun painting them, I've decided to model the complete 2nd Company of Ultramarines, per 5th ed. Codex:

2nd Company - Battle Company
Heraldic Colour - Yellow/Gold
Captain Sicarius - Master of the Watch
6 Tactical Squads
2 Assault Squads
2 Devastator Squads
2 Dreadnoughts

I have:

Sicarius
One tactical squad
One assault squad
One devastator squad
One scout sniper squad
Rhino and a Whirlwind
Marneus Calgar with Honor Guard

Here are some pics so far... btw, I love magnets and I plan to go full slow with putting them all over my mini's to use as mounting points for various bits.

See the magnet hiding under the transfer?

Yep, you can fit a magnet in a purity seal. Worth it? Maybe not.

Can pop other bits on over the bigger seals.

Had to.

Come on...not even a "God...not another 2nd Company Ultramarines post..." ?

Sorry...my one and only shameless bump, more pics tonight.

The magnets made me giggle. The models are well painted IMO though.

Nice basing and painting. Be sure to look into getting those mould lines up. You don't have to get all of them but really noticeable ones are detrimental to an otherwise lovely set of miniatures.

No trees were hurt in the making of this sig, however many electrons were disturbed.

Well thank you! :-)

Honestly, any chance I get to use magnets on these little guys, I jump at. For anyone that wants to know, they are the 1/16" x 1/32" magnets.

I find it easier to notch a pilot hole with the tip of exacto blade. After that i use a 1/16" drill bit (just the bit) by hand. Helps me from going overboard with the drilling, although my thumb and forefinger hate me. Getting the magnets sunk into purity seals without drilling all the through the seal is a treat. I bought myself dinner @ Taco Bell to celebrate.

Anyways, these little guys are nothing that's not been done a million times before, but hey.

I'm struggling so hard to break past the table-top quality barrier, but I'm just stuck there for now, it seems.

^This^

I don't spend near the time I should on prep. I do want to get to a higher level of painting and presentation, and it definitely starts with the basics! That line on the backpack exhaust vent is particularly grievous! *And the helmet....and other places*

Picked up some static grass for my bases today...

The local hobby store in town has quite the handy selection of all sorts of stuff. Picked up 200 1/16"x1/32" magnets and 150 1/8"x1/32" magnets for 20 bucks, a steal. Also picked up a .25mm archive pen for writing on standards, they only had black though. Would like a white one to do intricate designs on my UM's armor.

Here are the pics of the bases with static grass. They are composed of two layers of 1/8" cork board, roughly shaped using a regular marine-sized based as a template. After supergluing the cork together, I added some medium/fine gravel stock that I had from the Hobby Store from a while ago. I painted black, drybrushed with Adeptus then with Astronomicon. I've been fooling around with mini's for a while, but these are the first bases I've made, ever.

All in all, I'm happy so far.

The marines are still WIP, lot of details and things I need to finish painting and cleaning up.

Some more additions...what do you guys think?

They are at least TT quality...I just cannot seem to break that barrier. Not with Ultramarines, anyway. Any tips?
