I know there was a discussion recently about Karanak, the Flesh Hound special character, making his unit go from fast attack to elite. Somebody on here mentioned that they called GW and they were told he made the unit count as an elite choice. A bunch of other people feel this is a typo. I believe this is a typo, largely because of the wording: "he is simply an upgrade for the unit, taken as an elite choice as normal"-I believe this is word for word, having read it enough times, but my book is not in front of me. An "upgrade" for the unit is the same wording as for the Changeling-who is taken as an upgrade for a troop unit. Because it says "upgrade for the unit"-which is normally fast-it should not change slots. All of this can be argued back and forth, but if he actually counted as an elite choice, why would he be sold on GW's site as a fast attack model? Due to wording and his selling profile on the website, I'd say it's a safe argument that the wording in the codex is a typo. Is there anyone besides me who refuses to switch him over to an elite slot because of a GW typo that they haven't fixed yet?

He is simply a unit upgrade character.
Stays Fast as it allways has done.

Just like adding the changeling to a horror unit.

I fully agree-but somebody at GW apparently said it switches. Now, I know the people on the phone aren't always correct about rules, but a few people have accepted this fact. I was just surfing the site and realized he was sold as a fast attack, which I thought would resurface the argument and validate his unit staying fast, not moving to elite.

Neither what a GW employee says over the phone nor how a unit is sold on the website are conclusive evidence.

The book clearly has an error. It says (approx) "Elite choice as normal", when FH are not normally Elite.

I suspect most folks come down on the side of thinking Karanak's entry is the part that's wrong, rather than Flesh Hounds' placement in the army list. But it's probablyh worth discussing with opponents or tournament organizers to make sure you're on the same page.

I fully agree with your post, the "as normal" part is enough to suggest it is a typo, I was just mentioning that in addition to that, if any nay-sayers argue, I can point to the site and show him listed as a fast attack choice too. Those two points together should be enough. If I brought him to a tournament, I'd field him as a fast attack. If somebody argued, I'd take it to the TO, show the relevant points, and if I was told no, I'd probably shake hands, ask for a refund and leave-or stick around and watch. Of course, why you would bring Karanak to a tourney is beyond me...he's not THAT impressive, and people see fleshhounds and they shoot on sight

Why is it that the typo is the 'elite' part, and not the 'as normal' part? The more specific language in this case imo is counts as an elite choice.

The as normal is a clarifier that certainly implies a typo is present, but the STRONGER statement is the explicit 'counts as an elite' not the 'as normal' which references the previously mentioned elite.

If anything, we are at an impasse based on his position in the back of the codex, but that could be just for convenience. Besides, now you can take 4 units of flesh hounds! (sort of)

It is stronger to say "as normal" because The Changeling is treated the EXACT same way with the exact same wording- minus the typo: treated as a unit upgrade as normal. Based on the same wording (minus a typo error) for the Changeling, the "as normal" and the minor addition I found of Karanak being sold by GW as a fast attack, I don't see how the error should put him in the elite section, nor will I play him as an elite-I only run one unit of hounds too, so 4 units doesn't do much for me, and probably won't for many others either.

TBH, everything points towards staying as it is.
Its a simple typo that people will try and argue just for the sake of causing an argument.

In either case though, he is terrible for his ponits, and hounds are just as bad, if not worse.

If you want fast killers in the FA slot then take seekers.
They look better, hit harder and are cheaper.

Oh, don't worry-I do use seekers. The only reason Karanak would ever be useful is he adds a further 4 rending attacks to his unit, and you can have 2 models in the unit with S5 rending attacks. Not great, but not bad for 120 pts total. But yeah, seekers are MUCH better
