Hi guys looking for some help here.
I am looking to build a reasonably competitive list, will be playing at the local shop so fun is most important but it's more fun to win a few.
I expect to play mostly against IG and Marines

So here goes (No upgrades except where explicitly stated)
HQ
Tyranid Prime *1 = 80

Elites
Zoanthropes *2 = 120
Venomthropes *2 = 110

Troops
Genestealers scything talons *19 = 304
Broodlord scything talons *1 = 62
Warriors *5 = 150
Hormagaunts *29 = 174

Total = 1000

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would suggest adding some Hive Guard (the Elite Shooters, not the Tyrant Guard) instead of Venomthropes. The Hive Guard have a S8 Assault 2 weapon which is very much needed to destroy tanks and vehicles (which Guard and some SM use heavily). Maybe add 2 or 3 since you only plan on playing 1000 pnts. Also, you could put the Zoanthropes in a Mycetic Spore pod, as it can easily get them behind enemy lines long enough to destroy a vital tank or squad, and it will also prove to be a distraction in some cases, although for 1000 points it might be unneeded.
I would try to upgrade your prime more, giving it boneswords or something. It's usually best to find out what you prefer than to listen to someone tell you what to use, so just experiment with some things.

I would probably keep the genestealers as they are a HUGE scare tactic as they can demolish space marine squads in close combat if they get the charge. Maybe give them venom sacs so they can wound easier and get easier rending from the rerolls on smaller things. I'm kinda iffy on the BL in such a small game but if you find it useful then use it.

Depending on what you have you could keep the warriors, and run them with the Prime, as they get better with him. Maybe give him some boneswords also. With genestealers, a warriors, and a prime you could have one evil close combat list.

Also you could think about adding a Trygon, as they are 200 pnts that will be well worth the effort as they can get behind enemy lines and wreak havoc on vehicles (also they are a big distraction allowing your other things to move up without taking as much shooting).

Here's a sample List I would run.

HQ
Prime with Boneswords Adrenal Glands 100 pnts

Elite
Hive Guard x3 150 pnts
Zoanthropes x2 160 pnts w/ Mycetic Spore

Troop
Genestealers x10 w/ Toxin Sacs 170 pnts
Genestealers x10 w/ Toxin Sacs 170 pnts

Heavy Support
Trygon Prime, Adrenal Glands 250 pnts

1000 pnts total

A heavily close combat oriented list, but really good in small 1000 pnt games I've learned. Genestealers outflank, deepstrike the zoanthropes and the Trygon Prime, only thing to start on the table is usually the other Prime and the Hive Guard. Only thing to watch out for is not to leave the Hive Guard out of range of your Synapse as they can become useless if you placed them out of LoS and suddenly they can only shoot at things in their LoS, because of Lurk.

Alternatively you could replace the genestealers with Warriors and run the Prime with them, just experiment and find out what works for you. That's really the best way to start with Tyranids, is to experiment and find out what works and what doesn't from experience.

Good Luck ;D, May the Hive Mind grant you many victories.

Somewhere

Im guessing your running the prime with warriors
Split stealers into 2 groups.
Oh and it is a bit big for 1000points but maybe swap Prime for Tervigon HQ? in DOW this can be a huge win.
HG are good amazing at 1000points, very few big tanks like monolith and Landraider, Zoanthropes are for those xD
AND WHERE IS YOUR TRYGON!! :O :O :O
Get a trygon most fun I have ever had with nids is with these bugs.

The Tyranids are like the great Hydra, remove one head, two more will sprout from it's neck equally deadly, they care not for plea for mercy, for they have no soul to care. All that is left in the void of their soul is a hunger, It is this, that the marines cannot kill...

At 1,000 points only HQ choices are tervigon and prime.

20 stealers is a big squad, especially at 1,000 points. I would be inclined to drop broodlord and make them 2 squads of 15 - drop the scything as well. Hormogants can be dropped to 20. That's 4 good troop choices.

On elites, you have 230 points here - I would look to go 2 hive guard, 2 zoanthrope rather than venomthrope. You need to kill any mech with your elite slots and the loss of cover will have to be the price you pay here. If you do really want a venomthrope to accompany the warriors then maybe drop 1-2 stealers to say 12-13 strong broods so you can run 1 as well as the elite choices above.

Thanks for all the input. This list depending on the objectives has 2 configurations. I kept the fewer hugs squads to reduce my kill points but both the genestealers and Gaunts can be split without changing numbers.

Regardless I will take some of the advice here and see what I can come up with. I do have a few hive guards so may throw them in to see what happens.
I also have a tyrand and trygon/mawlock but thought tossing them in for a game this size might be a bit cheese. Same issue with the carnifex.
Don't have a tervigon but will play around with the idea. I just can't wrap my head around a nid army without a swarm which is why the huge gaunt and stealer squads.
Thanks again I'll let you all know how it goes.
