After reading "Storm of Iron" and being under a bad influence of a dedicated Iron Warriors collector for a few years I finally decided to make a small army myself.
This is not my first venture into the realm of chaos (there's a reason I call myself the damned artificer :shifty: ) But this time around my love has fallen for the steel clad siege masters of Pertuabo.
I like their background a lot, and although it might be considered an easy colour scheme I see some great potential in it, and I personally think that the somewhat plain metal colours can be made to look very interesting and offers a great deal of opportunities for different techniques. I am also in love with the whole black/ yellow hazard stripe theme, it looks so great and I think it is a great way to add a very varied form of variety to the otherwise simple and perhaps even dull steel & brass scheme.
enough talking, and on to the pictures, first of is the test model.
The model is painted in vallejo metallics as I find them to be really great, and the steel areas have been washed in vallejo smoke, which I'm new to using but already feel like I'm gonna use a lot. The models head and torso are both green stuff press mould tests, to see if it was possible to get a good result by replicating certain parts in putty, which I believe it is from my results.
Next is my PIP dreadnought, converted from the imperial venerable dreadnought.
Hope you all like it so far, and feel free to leave comments, constructive criticism etc.

Here's some of the stuff I press moulded in brown- and green stuff.
I also have a plan to add a small squad of traitor guardsmen, having an excuse to finish this rogue psyker I started almost two years ago.
More updates soon.

Great stuff, I'll keep an eye on this one. I especially like the stripes on the testies leg, very nice if it's your first go at hazard stripes.
Where is the dreadnoughts base from? Does it come with the ven-kit?
My stuff aint the best, but if you want some inspiration, feel free to check out my Iron Warriors in my gallery

Hehe, testies XD...
Well enough of my imaturity for today.
Thanks Limbo, checked out your IW's they look good
It's not my first try at hazard stripes no, but it's been a while since I free handed any (as I did on the test mini)
The base is a microart studio base with some small modifications added, the base supplied in the venerable dread is the one they designed for the first plastic dread way back, it's okay but if you need more than one dread in your army you have to convert it, and if rubble ain't your style it is pretty annoying. I think they ought to supply one of the flat versions instead as it's way better.

Update time:
First up is my sorcerer, I haven't decided yet if he should be an Iron warrior, or a loan out from the thousand sons. What do you guys think ?
Next up is the PIP of my first possessed, still some work to do before he's done.
I also started playing around with some paint on my converted abaddon the despoiler even though he's not for this army, but had him lying around.
Lastly, a friend of mine commissioned me to paint his traitors of chaos set, here's the first of them almost done:

very very nice! i like that green on that nurgle model, what color did you use?
I would make the warlock part of the thousand sons just to get some other color schemes in there, plus it can be a nice break after you've painted the same silver warriors over and over!!

Thanks
The green is Vallejo military green, blended with an airbrush up to a 50-50 mix of green and white, then it have had a series of washes with devlan mud and some different inks, then a few stages of highlights
Yeah the sorcerer might get to be a thousand sons one, although I don't think I'll get tired of painting the metal colours, as I have some nice ideas for spicing it up and making it less monochrome.

So it's update time again, and I have some small progress.
I mannaged to salvage this warsmith miniature cheap of ebay, it was in a terrible condition when I got it all covered in thick superglue and thick paint. But I managed to strip it down and this is the converted and nearly finished model for my army.
And along side my dreadnought, that is also in the process of being painted.
I've also got a nice package with some nice stuff I'll be adding to the force. Something that will really "suit" them :chrome: hehehe
I'll be back soon...

Update time:
I have started building spaceship bases for my Iron warriors, I've used all sorts of stuff I had lying around from different kits like the shattered remains of a skyshield landing pad that I have cannibalised for my titans.
First of is the first two of six bases for my terminators:
And one for my daemon prince:
I also painted the interior of my land raider, I went for a warm ochre colour as I've done a lot of grey interiors in the past which work great for tanks with a warm exterior colour scheme. Therefore I decided to reverse it for this one as the steel scheme it'll get is quite a cold one. I decided to leave the opus machina on the engine as to represent the dark mechanicus, in my opinion they wouldn't have changed their insignia as they still believe they're the true mechanicus. I got the idea to change the black/white scheme to an all black highlighted with jade green, the idea being that it symbolizes the dark mechanicus' belief that their way is the only true way of perceiving the omnissiah instead of the mechanichus' great schism of the omnissiah and the emperor being one and the same or two different entities.

Those are some really, really good press-moulds. May I ask what your "error rate" is- how many you discarded compared to the batch of good ones you photoed there?
And the metallics are coming out great too. That's not easy, adding depth to such a simple set of colors. Nice work.

The press moulding is something I've utilised for a few years now, so I've gotten a hang of it, and the ones you see are from a group with no discarded ones at al, it really comes down to the mould you make, if it's good your casts will be as well. Some of the heads I've been making since these of other helmet types have been discarded, but these are two part moulds (as the torsos and helmets I've already shown) and that is a lot trickier with modelling putty
I'm glad you appreciate my metallics as that is something of a hated area for many people. I originally didn't find motivation to do this army because it seems like a very low level paint scheme as metallics are pretty easy to use for beginners as well, but in my planning process I realised that it could be done in so many ways, and that I could get away with using a lot of different techniques as with normal painting and get a really great result.
I've heard a lot of stupid arguments from people glorifying the non metallic metal effect, which is a cool technique imo, but their arguments against metallic colours have been that they didn't fit in the 28mm range as all the other colours needs a lot of highlighting, and looked off in many ways which I find to be a lame reason as metallics needs a lot of work too to look great. I'd like to try some NMM stuff out sometime, but I'm sticking with my metallics forever, and the metallics from Vallejo are so awesome that I don't think I'd be able to ditch them even if I wanted to

Here's a pip of my daemon prince, I still need some highlighting here and there, and some more work on the sword.
I also started work on my 5 man plague marine squad, I want them to be death guard marines as I think it'd be a nice touch to have them in a dirtied up version of their pre heresy paint scheme. Also I believe the Iron Warriors is somewhat sceptical of cult marines except for khorne worshippers, and that explains why these are death guard as they are allies, trading their services for some sort of personal gain.
here's a preview of the pip.
And finally I've slowly started work on my mk II and mk III suits, making a squad of chosen. These guys are the real deal, the actual traitors from the heresy, the really tough guys. The FW sets are amazing to work with, and the sm character conversion set is so cool !!!!
Here's a few pics.
More soon.

Your painting is really nice, and that Dreadnought is among the best loyalist to Chaos Dread conversions I've ever seen. However, sorcerers and possessed aren't really at home in an Iron Warriors army - Iron Warriors abhor mutation, and will cut off mutated limbs and replace them with bionics. They're pretty much Chaos atheists
Fluff aside, nice work so far!

I know that strictly fluff wise mutations and sorcerers aren't the IW thing, but still both things apear in Storm of Iron by Graham Mcneill (a must read for IW fans !) where the warsmith descents to daemonhood, Honsous is touched by the daemonic (possession) and a sorcerer is utilised (I think he's on loan from the thousand sons or something) So field possesion is unavoidable imo hehehe

In my opinion, no Warsmith would throw away good cause of mutation, they'd simply put em in the first rank storming against the enemy. And yeah, spending that much time in the warp, mutations are bound to happen, unless your gakking Draigo...
I'm really digging your Mk II and III guys, only gripe I have is with the poses, variety is the spice of life as they say. But I've also heard that these guys are pretty hard to pose dynamicly, is that true?

I think you're right, just as they accept bezerkers as they do the job so damn fine
I'll pose them so they look more individual, and it's only the torso, legs and arms that are glued so far. But to answer your question, yeah they're pretty hard to pose differently, the set consists of 5 pair of identical arms, 5 identical torso's and helmets 10 identical back packs and only two different sets of legs. This means that unless you convert and mix parts (as I intend) they are virtually the same 5 minis. But the set's are a great basis for detailing or mixing armour types so they're still great imo
I'd encourage everyone to buy some of these as they're awesome
