OK this is my first non-intorduction post and with much trepidation here is the first unit i have finished painting (I guess). Ive only painted military models many many years ago when i was in 7th grade so I know im not up to this forums skill level. That being said what advice does this forum have for me? Here is the first one and will be have many core troopers looking exactly like it. The special weapons figures will be slightly different.

i also have absolutely no idea about the base (flocking). Its gale force nine fine sand that was slightly painted "Rust" color of the Model Master brand. Do i keep the base black or should the base edge be the same rust? so...

The armor looks pretty good but the devil is in the details. If you had a better photo of his face and the gun, we'd be able to offer a lot better advice.

As for the base rim, the rusty paint sounds like it would be a good fit, especially if that's what you used for the flak jacket.

Also, I used to paint military models in like 7th grade too, then abandoned it. This last summer I got back in to models and painting and picked up 40k. You can see my work in this thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/349439.page

Sorry new phone and didnt realize it would be that small. I really need a real camera.

The armor is gore red and blood red. the skull face painted on the mask is bleached bone. The dirt is rust painted....

Hope this one is better...

I keep my rims black.

It all depends on each players preference for that model. I have a guard army thats based with graveyard earth sand, washed with devlan mud/chaos black wash and then drybrushed bleached bone with static grass, and I left those rims black, whereas my Cities of Death army has all the bases painted gray to help them blend in. IMO its really not a big deal, try out both and go with what you like.

Just my 2 cents

Are you using flock or static grass?

The way I do static grass is:

1. Apply super glue to the desired areas (You can thin it out, but I don't)

2. Dip the entire base into the tub of grass, making sure you have enough on there.

3. Hold upside down for a few seconds so the grass is raised while tapping off excess.

This is how I do it and I think it looks okay, many people have other ways, but I feel this is simple and it works well.

Uhm static grass. I thought flocking was the process and not neccesarily a specific type. I used wood glue, put the "sand" on part then stuck a bunch of static grass on another part.

Looks good though, I usually add my dirt effects, and put the grass on top of it. Here's my example. Not great but I'm happy with it ^^

I think I know what Powerslave means when he says static grass. Its exactly what it sounds as. If I'm not mistaken, he means the type of grass that raises. Like when you bring a balloon close to your hair and the static causes your hair to stand up, thats due to the static. I just bought some flock for my bases and it will be the first time I have done any flocking to my figures. I applied some of the "cheap" flock I purchased at the local hobby store because I did not want to pay nearly 9 bucks for the citadel stuff. But I can now see the difference. The flock I purchased does not stand up at all, it just looks weird. And for me at least, that doesn't work.

Also if anyone knows of any other brand that sells that type of flock "Static Grass" other then citadel that I can find at my local hobby shop for a reasonable price, please let me know.

Thanks, and good luck.

GaleForce Nine has some cheap stuff. I guess its good. I just bought it myself and as evidenced by this topic am clueless.

GF9 is good stuff, and they offer a wider variety of colours than GW's product. However the Citadel tub of grass gets you a lot! As in I used it on about 30 bases for Flames of war, and it doesn't even look like I've made a dent in the thing.
