March 6th, The Journey Begins

So a little while ago I bought myself the Space Wolves battleforce to start my first 40k army. This is the first of anything I've done with miniatures. The closest I've ever done is putting together Gundam models, but those snap together and don't require painting.

Last week I got around to starting it because I only had the week off, but I only half finished 5 with only 1 arm on each in about 5 hours. After some admonitions by the GW manager about being slow at gluing (too much time spent dry-fitting) I'm getting better. Some of it involved pieces breaking and/or not fitting and me being angry at them at one point.

So, lets get some pictures in here and I'll caption them with explanations. Subsequent "posts" will have the date and title as the subject of the post.

Just the box, I do this before I build anything I get.

This is my workspace with my construction tools laid out. It also has one and a half of the Gundam models I've put together.

Just a sprue shot.

This is around where I stopped to eat something.

These are the Grey Hunters just before I started the WIP blog. The meltagun one is it's own story so if anyone is interested ask away, I'm just very tired at the moment.

This is my standard bearer for the Grey Hunters. I just finished him up tonight.

If anyone is curious about anything just ask and I'll answer, even if it's about the Gundams. XD

Night everyone and I hope you enjoy my journey.

I'm right with you man. I'm making skyclaws at the moment. Just remember to get rid of those mold lines.

Well part of those 5 hours was looking at and cleaning the mold lines way too carefully.

Side note: I just picked up Pokemon Black today, not sure how much progress I'll make today.

March 6th, First Squad Assembled

So I've avoided starting Pokemon Black for enough time to finish off my squad, so here's the pictures:

I've chosen that whichever characters have the fur kilt is the Mark of the Wulven characters in my army. If anyone can think of one of the other guys as a better fit let me know.

I'm thinking for this guy making his hair the usual orange you give to the Blood claws, but have it greying at the roots and a bit more above the roots. Good idea? Not sure how I'd do it, I assume I just drybrush grey.

So this is the way I ended up attaching the melta with advice from the GW manager and learning how to pin the hand to the wrist.

Not sure how ling it'll be for that. I'm going to finish my test models soon and I'll post those. They're the Ultramarines that come with the paint set. But for these models I have 5 more grey hunters and 5 scouts to build. I have to convert a shotgun hand to hold the meltagun I'm givingto a scout.

How difficult was it to attach the Melta? I heard it can be quite a pain.

I'll include the step by step photos of this on the next one I do and the one for the scout because it'll be more complicated. Actually, the scout with melta will be my first real conversion.

Spoiler:

Well I had to cut off the stock (shoulder rest in the back) because it would be inside the upper arm.

I took one of the sets of arms that are meant to hold the bolter. I cut off the hand that holds the grip of the bolter at the back of the wrist. (may have been a bad idea since he now has no wrists ) The next part was helped by the GW manager since the normal gluing I did originally didn't work and I snapped the gun off the hand.

So he glued a pin in the hand attached to the gun put the other end in the wrist unglued to dry fit. We found that the shoulder on the grip arm would be a little too far forward but had no choice. So I glued the pin in the right way, it had to be rotated in a very specific spot it seemed. Then I put plastic glue on the shoulder of the two arms and pushed them into place and held them for a while.

The right shoulder was a little too far forward like we saw. So when I put the shoulder pad i pushed the front inside of the pad against the front of the shoulder leaving more space inside on the back to make it appear as if the arm was in a normal, physically possible, position.

So ya, it was annoying, but now that I know what to do it's easy.

I suppose it looks better without the shoulder rest, never even noticed it

It took me a while to make it look like it had never been there. I don't have a saw so it was a bitch to get off.

Keep in mind this is the first army I've ever worked on. I should probably mention that at the top.

I also got some Dark Eldar to vary things up when I get to painting.

It's rather late for that now. Besides, I'm rather anal when painting details it seems so I don't think it will be too much of a problem, though I keep getting encouraged by the employees at the GW to not paint things that won't be seen. Although he's the only model like that in my army. I may have a few with bolters over the chest eventually, but I don't feel like that's how space wolves should look. I like the fluffiness of the look, even if they have a butload of tiny details to paint.

And yes, the pod will be a pain. I've been told to paint it in two parts then assemble the two. I assume just like with small models when I need to join pieces I should file away the paint where they'll be glued together. That's the one thing I've never been sure about...I made a thread about it in the P&M Forum about that topic. (Painting before or after gluing?)

Like I said above, I take to long because I overthink and overplan things. >_<

I didn't think I'd get so much response. I knew this would be better than putting it on my website. When I eventually have other projects should I make a new thread or make this thread my everything blog?

You may want to attach 2 of the fins when you prime so it will go together better.

I think I may be bringing it to GW to get help when I do it. Or offer more details? I find they're very helpful with painting and assembling stuff, especially after you've bought something.

I may have more work completed soon. I made a makeshift sprue holder using my ultramarine paint set box. I cut the battleforce sprues in half like they would normally come and put them in the box. I'll be bringing 5 grey hunters and 5 scouts with me to work on during my 5 hour break tomorrow. I doubt I'll finish them all but hopefully I finish half.

If anyone really wants I'll show a pic of the makeshift transport, and my citadel case for that matter with my models inside.

Make the base as normal, and the top bit then add 2 fins to the top bit and prime.

It should go together better.

So somehow in 4 hours I only built one model. >_< I guess it'll be a bit longer. Though I'm going to the GW on Friday for a few hours so the manager will probably get me to work faster.

I built the other grey hunters on friday at the GW, I didn't take pictures yet and have been bogged down with school work. I'm planning on getting the scouts built with the conversion required for the melta. I should hopefully have them done and posted by the end of the week, and the grey hunter pictures Tuesday night most likely.
