Hey all, just a few days ago I was browsing through the forums and came across a magnificent forum from Hyenajoe for making cloaked Chaos Marines, and I got so ridiculously excited that I immediately rushed out and spent seventy dollars on all the materials necessary for the project. Anyway, go and visit his tutorial at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/313112.page if you like what you see here!

And without further ado, here are my three Chosen Marines that I have finished modeling. Keep in mind that this is my first time EVER using greenstuff, it was all a giant experiment for me.

Here's the first one I pieced together. I was very nervous at this stage and had no idea what I was in for, and therefore followed the tutorial as closely as I could. I'm mostly satisfied with it, but the one problem in my mind is that the rock he's standing on isn't too great. Dare I say that I'm a little... 'rocky' at it? Hahaha... Ha... Ha.... Yeah.

This is the second one I built, and I was getting much more confident. The spots that the sculpted fur are covering are actually HUGE gaps between the cloak and the shoulderpads, so the greenstuff is an absolute necessity. I deviated from the tutorial here a bit, in that I decided to just sculpt ALL the fur myself instead of using plastic pieces of fur from the Chaos Warriors fantasy sprue.

And here are three pictures of the final one I created just earlier this night:

The first picture is kind of blurry, sorry about that. The way that the cloak is designed, along with the bulky nature of the shoulderpads, makes the posing options for the hands really limited, so I was nervous about being able to actually make him hold the flamethrower. I also feel like my fur-making skills are improving with the greenstuff.

So yeah, that's how far I've gotten, should be making another one tonight or tomorrow. Any comments would be much appreciated, as well as any suggestions, particularly about ways to sculpt more convincing rocks. Right now they just look like scarred chunks of green goo, which isn't exactly the direction I was trying to go in...

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, it's not nearly as intimidating as I thought it was going to be. Don't make the mistake that I made and try to work with it when your hands and tools are dry, however. It will stick to you, to your tools, and to everyone you've ever loved. Make sure to keep a moist working surface, moist hands, and moist tools. You don't need specialized tools for simple stuff like what I've done, either. All I used for the sculping on the green stuff was an old pocket knife and my hands. Easy as pie! Just don't forget that water.

the cloaks look great on chaos marines imo.

Thanks a ton! I'm planning on using them as Chaos Chosen, which means that eventually I'm going to be making at LEAST six of them, more likely eight of them. Four of them will be armed with powerswords, one with flamethrower. I'm hoping to get some use out of them as a Chaos version of genestealers; They'll hit unexpectedly, do a lot of damage when they do (hopefully) and look great while doing it!

Be sure that I'll follow your blog with interest!

Are you going to paint them with the same color scheme you've used on the termie lord I've seen in your gallery?

Powerswords and flamethrower are a good choice. Are you going to mark them?

Yup, they'll be using the same color scheme as the half-finished terminator sorcerer I've got in my gallery. The cloak isn't going to be the same bright pink, though, as they're supposed to be masters of stealth, so I'm going to paint it shadow grey. I just got another one done last night, I'll put it up after classes. Painting should be starting sometime during spring break, so about a week.

Alright, first update's here.

I just finished another one of my chosen last night, bringing the count to 4. Only 6 more to go!

I'm under the impression that this one's not as nice as the others, but compared to one of my normal marines it's still beautiful. The posing doesn't feel as dynamic, but it's very important to me that I keep myself from repeating simiilar poses on all my Chosen. That'd make the squad look stale, and that is the last thing that should happen.

Oh, and ignore the big lump of greenstuff under his arm. That's there to hold it in place, and I'll soon be resculpting it to look like an extension of his elbow joint/arm/whatever. It'll look more natural, basically.

Alright, group shot time!

In my opinion they're already starting to look like a team!

So, any comments or criticisms would be appreciated, provided you dont hurt my feelings too badly.

Alright, took a bit of a break yesterday and didn't make any headway (apparently studying is important or something. I don't know.).

I did manage to get this whipped up, though:

You see, I didn't want my Chosen to be holding a big bulky banner, as I feel that would really ruin the feel of the squad. Plus, I just don't like those big goofy poles. (Obligatory joke of questionable quality here)
As a solution, a friend of mine suggested that I simply plant the symbol onto one of those fancy shields that I"m not using. I liked the idea so much that I used it. Obviously it's a big off-center, and covered in glue speckles and file scratches... But hey, it's still better than a pole in my opinion. Anyway, Im soon to be at work on my next Chosen, hope to have one up by tonight or tomorrow.

Those look great, what I did for my Chosen was add Chaos cloaks to all my old Dark Angels figs I had and added a few spiky bits and painted their right shoulder pads a Nurgle green and the rest in Black Legion colors. They really stick out as some even stated ("Hey is that Brother Bethor?" and I say "Yes he just turned tratior and is enjoying his new promotion to Battle Captian") Even old school Rhino's (I got 4 for $1 a piece at a garage sale) look so good that me keeping this vehicles is an honor. I am hoping to create a whole new company in my chaos force (5th Company "Traitors" all Dark Angel's) all Chosen, so keep doing great work.

Alright, it's been about two weeks since my last update, but in the meantime I've been busy. I present to you the full squad of Chosen, ready to be painted:

And here's a close-up on the champion. The shield he bears is an Icon of Slaanesh.

Also, I'm starting my own custom Chaos Lord. He'll be armed with daemonic wings, the Mark of Slaanesh, and a daemon weapon. Right now he's obviously just barely in the works... Here's a couple pictures:

The spear at the moment looks a bit too long on the head-end, so I'm going to add a little bit of haft to the rear to give it some counterweight. I haven't worked out what his other arm will be just yet; unfortunately they don't make outstretched pistol arms on the left, only the right, so I'm still trying to figure that bit out. Also, the head isn't final; I haven't decided whether I want him to be vampiric as he is (it fits his fluff as a former Blood Angel) or helmeted like my chosen. I'm leaning towards vampiric... Anyway, tell me what you think!

Ha, yeah, I was sold on it right when I saw it as well. It's from the Chaos Knights pack from Fantasy Warhammer if you want to check it out. That pack is full of weapons that make great daemon weapons., just be prepared to chop and greenstuff the hell out of the arms to make them work... I had to redo every joint in that goddamn arm to get that pose, and it took hours to figure out how to make it look like his arm isn't broken. (This is my first time at a conversion this intense)

Love it - its a really effective look for chosen, who I think should be markedly different from the rank and file CSM.

Personally Im using the Dark Angel robes for my chosen - which makes them look sneaky (IMHO) - fine as mine are alpha legion. Your furred cloaks have more of a savage, brutal look.

What paint scheme are you chosing?

Hey to make an outstreached pistol arm for the left get a pistol arm for right, CAREFULLY cut the pistol from his hand, this can take a couple of goes, next get a chainsword hand and chop chainsword of, glue pistol, paint

I'll show you a picture!

The armor will be using this color scheme - Liche purple for the extremities, Warlock purple trim, and Shadow grey for the helm and torso. The cloaks on these chosen will also be shadow grey, as it seems to be a sneakier color than the bright pink favored by my Slaaneshi Sorcerer. I'm still working on the fur... At first I wanted it to look like it was dyed blue, but then I realized that looked like crap. It'll probably be a dark brown.

Nice scheme.

Whilst brown fur would be realistic (as it is certainly the most common fur), Im not sure it would really suit the colour scheme?

May I suggest a very light grey/white - kinda polar bear-ish?

I'll have to give that a try for sure. I'm not very good at advanced painting, yet, and fur seems to be particularly challenging for me. I'll give it a go, though.

Brand new update! I've been unusually busy today, and I finished my half-done Chaos Lord, for the most part. All that's left to do is wait for the wings to cure so that I can scrape off the unnecessary blob of greenstuff holding them on and replace it with some (hopefully) natural-looking webbing, to make it look as if the wings are growing out of the Chaos Lord's back. Any comments?

(By the way, thanks to Tyranic Marta for the idea on the pistol arm. I can't believe I didn't think of just chopping off chainsword and swapping it to a pistol... I'd done it before on the dual-chainsword fellow I posted, but for some reason it just didn't occur to me...)

For those who aren't in the know, if it wasn't for Hyenajoe's fantastic tutorial (which you can find a link to in the first post of this blog) I would never have started converting anything, much less began to mess with greenstuff. I highly advise checking out his gallery for inspiration.

Well, it's been a while, but I've been busy, as you'll see here...

First up is that Chaos Lord. I haven't gotten TOO much done on him, seeing as Warhammer has been on the backburner for a while, but here's what I've got so far:

As you can see, I sculpted a base for him out of green-stuff and stuck some random Chaos spikey bits in it to make something for him to be jumping off of. I also added some skulls on chains to his back, hopefully to give him more of a dynamic feel. I like how it turned out, and now i"m about halfway down with the painting process.

As a side-update, here are a few of my HQs I've painted up over the years...

This is the first HQ I ever painted, and he's still my favorite. Also, he's technically my first 'conversion', although all I did was put wings on him from the possessed sprue. He's starting to show his age, though. This is from an era where I didn't thin down my paints at all when I painted. You can tell, I think.

This is another sorcerer I did up. I don't like him as much as the sword and wing variant, but there he is.

And finally, here's my terminator sorcerer. In case you haven't noticed, I REALLY like sorcerers. Anyway, I feel like the standard of painting on this one has risen a bit, although it's still unfinished.

Anyway, that's all for today! Thanks for reading, and comments are welcome!

Alright, here's a small little update for you fellas. I went a little crazy painting last night, and finished up my winged Chaos Lord (except for his base)! I present to you Dorian the Blade, wielder of the daemon spear Khaer'Drakan!

And finally, here's a close-up of the spearhead:

So yeah, in all, I'd say that I experimented most on this guy's paint job. This was my first time painting highlights on anything at all, but I feel like the blade turned out alright. I started by giving it a base-coat of blood red, then dry-brushed straight black onto everything but the edges, then highlighted with a mix of red gore, skull white, and blood red. I couldn't tell you the actual mixes, because I wing everything on the spot. Bad idea, I know.

One thing that I'm not good at is faces. I know this, and it is true. The face on this model is no different, and I'm sure that it's not quite up to standards. However, I wanted to make him pasty and pale-looking, and I got that down, so I'm satisfied. I also like the corruption seeping from his eyes, as well as the blood running from his mouth. (The story is that he was once a Blood Angels captain who was tempted to Slaanesh's side by exploitation of The Red Thirst. Slaanesh taught him to revel in his urge to drink blood, rather than deny it as shameful. The rest, my friends, is history!)

So yeah, tell me what you think! I'll probably be painting up the base tonight. I just HATE painting skulls.
