Subject: First painted mini and terrain piece (Vehicle Added!) (Currently need help with highlighting)
These are great. Love the terrain piece. Throw in a few highlights in the marines and they're golden.

And if anyone tells you differently, Formae, tape that terrain piece to your knuckles and bust their mouth.

Lol, thanks! Anyways, I'll probably have some updates tomorrow for any of you interested in this. Also, on Sunday, I might head down to my FLGS and pick up a rhino.

Good going so far! Far better than my first marines.
Some quick tips
1.Thinner coats. Try not to make the colour opaque on the first pass. Tip 2. will help with this.
2.Instead of painting directly out of the pot, spread it on some plastic (a blister pack works fine). This will mean you have less paint on the brush, so can be more precise.
3. Throw in a few highlights (a slightly lighter version of the base colour) on raised parts. Less is more here.
4. Washes are your friend. Almost the last step of your painting should be an ink wash. It settles in all the recesses and adds instant depth. When coupled with highlights it instantly improves your model 3 levels of awesomeness.
5. Keep up the good work, and paint when you ENJOY painting. If you get bored, take a break. It will reflect in quality.
Hope that helps, and good luck for the future!

Thank you very much for those tips. One question though, I tried highlighting with a lighter version of my base (Which is already a light Cathlan brown) and it seem to got all over the place. If someone could post a link to a guide, that would be nice. Also, what color of ink should I use for such a light color? I only have the black wash from the starter kit.

The only bad thing i have is on the last space marines you put a little to much paint on his eyes/face from what i can tell could just be the picuters though or my colours skeme, but other wise well done witht the terrain looks good!
Unfortunately, true highlighting is something that comes with practice.A half-way house for you would be 'overbrushing'. Basically, put a tiny amount of paint on your brush, and then gently wipe it on some kitchen role so it makes a faint mark. Then run this brush over raised areas a few times until you notice a difference. Again, less is more.
For your wash colour, probably Gryphonne Sepia, but that'll come down to personal preference when you have more experience.
I am really impressed if those are your first minis. Have you had any painting experience at all before? 'Cos if not, then after a year of painting you could even join 'Eavy Metal...those first steps are brilliant!

No, I've actually never had any experience with painting models or minis. Whenever I bought a model (Like an airplane, as these are my first 40k models) I would glue it (Badly, lol) and wouldn't touch it after that. When I looked at the box and saw how good it looked in the picture, I guess I got discouraged. But when I started 40k, exactly a week ago, I was determined to get em painted. Also, thanks for the tutorial video, Cadian. This will be very helpful for my next mini (Also, I just finished painting my 4th one, will post pics in a sec)

I'm sorry for the delay, but I have a nice little update. I don't have pictures of any marines... But I do have.... Pictures of a Razorback I just finished!
Also, the pictures have bad lighting so you might not be able to tell the difference between the brown and light brown.

I'm going to go back and highlight my guys, and I was wondering, how do I make a highlight color? Do I just take my basecoat and mix it with some skull white?

Sort of.
Let's look at the colour scheme. It's brown, so maybe choose a dfferent wash next time you get a chance. Shading is easier ehn it's al based around the same colour, especially when you're starting out!
So you've got a nice mid brown. You could shade that with Gryphonne Sepia. You can then highlight with a lighter brown, but instead of mixing that with a pure white, try mixing a highlight with bleached bone. It's got a hint of yellow to it, which will help it pop with the brown.
Also, lets look at your razorback. See those clumps? It's where the paint has gone on slightly thick. A great tip is if you have a pallette, mix a touch of water in with the paint. It has the effect of loosening it all up. It goes on smoother, and it's easier to control, as you're not trying to push a thick substance around.
A great start! My first mini was an epic titan legions knight paladin. I tried to paint it up as an ultramarine and it ended badly for me and the mini!
