Yellow is such a hard colour to work with, coupled with my overarching self critiscism, I decided to give myself a break and play with new colours.

Pics a little... Bleh. 1st pic was taken just as my lights exploded. 2nd pic on the flame freehand was taken afterwards. Apologies for the focus, I just couldn't get it with such poor light.

EDIT - Until my painting order arrives ( Now LATE!) I'm stuck with chaos black from GW. Glossy gloss gloss. Bluergh. Tried to matte it up with a bit of adeptus battlegrey. Highlights don't show so well, but they're black and battlegrey in increasing quantities.

Eyes are a brown base, then yellow/brown 1:1 and finished with orange thrown into the 1:1 yellow brown.

These look awsome! Perhaps because the green salamanders (in my view) looks better than imperial fists. Btw watch out for those mouldlines, that guy has a serious case of mould lines on his helmet.

He does indeed. S'ok, he's going in the stripper. When all my gear arrives, I'll probably knock up a few different chapters, and strip them once I've chosen.

Better light this morning. Ignore the uncleaned mess, he's a test mini. Finished ones will be cleaned.

Ah I see. You said you thought GW black was too glossy...what do you use instead?

Vallejo GC Black with a matte medium. But for the GW black, it's mixed with a relevant matte colour to cut the glossyness.

Do you have Badab Black? If so, carefully apply a Badab Black Wash over the Chaos Black. It should leave it much more Matt.

WIll compare it next time I do a black surface.

Generally I try not to end up with a wash as a surface finish. Recesses are fine, but the colour change a wash causes on open areas are never really uniform. I'm also part of the no dip for me camp, not so much I think anyone who does it is the devil of course. Everyone works to thier means. Black over black however seems like a better idea, as it really shouldn't matter about non uniform tinting.

Ramble over.

Interesting to note, there's not a drop of wash on this chap. based dark green for shading and layered on top with vague intentions of zenital highlights and general highlights on areas of interest. Partly an excercise in speed painting, and partly a break from my yellow marines. 30 minutes from start to finish including a cup of tea and a smoke. I imagine it'd look nicer if I took more time over it, but meh.
