Hey Dakkaites!

I'm just letting y'all know about the army creation tool that I just made using excel. It's rather basic but it gets the job done until the GW embargo is lifted in 2 months for army builder.

What about battlescribe? Though their lists are buggy (5 Wolf Scouts can only bring -5 CCW and Range weapons?) I would assume they don't care about embargos. Though I've gotten use to a good old calculator and some paper.

Also your list is awesome but could use some labeling. As a programmer I've learnt that comments are king!

Looks pretty cool, but you might want to set all the unit and upgrade quantities to zero before you upload it.

Fafnir - Thanks. I left those in as an example on how to use it.

Portaljacker - I use army builder and that is because it is compiled by multiple people which allows for a minimal amount of error. If an error is found it is easily reported and changed in the next update. This is just a stop gap for those who can't wait another 2 months after waiting nearly 10 years already.

True, I'm just nit are if paying for Army builder is worth it. What's their situation with GW? How are they allowed to exist? What are some real benefits tO using their program?

They do not release 40k files officially, but rather the fans do. This lets them steer clear of trouble.

I wouldn't be happy to not anti link people to a place where they can't get the codex online if they dont politely pm me.

They also have to wait 1 month after the codex's official release date.
The benefit is it's so widely used that most tournaments accept an army builder print off as proof that your list is correct.

Ah, ya, battlescribe is screwy, it was missing options for stuff in DE even though it had been updated for the new codex, as well as that issue with SW that I had.

BattleScribe does still have some bugs lurking in there, but is generally pretty good now (the "-5 selections from" issue is still there, but I've got it on my list for the next release). If you do find a bug, or want to ask for a new feature, please let me know over at http://battlescribe.uservoice.com. Often however, a lot of problems such as incorrect points values, selection limits and error messages are down to the data files being wrong.

The data files over at http://knowledgeforge.net/bsdata/ are also fan submitted for the same reasons as ArmyBuilder. If you find a problem with one, it's usually a quick fix - the data file editors come with BattleScribe. Just follow the example included in the sheet.
If you want a librarian put a 1 below his points cost, if you want 2 powers put a 2 below their points cost.

It does not error check or explain what every thing does so you have to do that on your own.

A couple things foda:

-Try underlining and bolding all the actual text in the spreadsheet. I makes it a lot easier to distinguish from the numbers.

-This sheet can only accommodate squads equipped identically. For instance, if you want one tac squad with an incinerator and another with a Psilencer, there is no way of distinguishing the two. You can put in for both upgrades, but then it looks like you have one super squad.

I don't expect this to be perfect (really no ones is), but it is a very good home grown sheet.

All you have to do is copy and paste the squad you want to make different below the rest of the sections, make the changes you want, and the calculations are done.
