Did a little search, but didn't see much (and I didn't scroll through all the pages) and this question came up this weekend:

Is 'Removed From Play' the same as 'slain'?

If a Tervigon is 'Removed From Play' by JoTWW, does it trigger its Brood Progenitor reaction?

Depends on who you ask.

In most casual games i've played in Removed from Game effects are treated as killed, but without triggering any wierd stuff that happens when they die (like Brood Progenitor or Lukas's Stasis Grenade). It's treated as being killed for any other purpose, usually..

In competition games it seems to be treated as being utterly different, so that if you have any clever way of staying alive if killed or coming back from death that gets negated too.

I'd also agree that removed from play =/= killed. If yarrik is killed, he's got a half chance of popping back up due to super-bionics, decidedly not dead. That's not in the spirit of vortex grenades or wraith cannons.

Of course, I'm sure some one will come on with an argument about weather units removed from play still give up a KP...

I believe that it also circumvents stuff like eternal warrior as, Ailaros said, they are not, in a rules sense, being killed.

I like to think of it as sucked into the warp, never to return. It's not the same as slain, they (and all their rules) are just gone. No special triggers after they are removed.

A model removed from play isn't dead. It's still alive, just off the board.

Think of it as being tossed back in reserves without being able to re-deploy.

So, abilities that trigger on death don't happen. And, for things like Phase Out, the models are still alive.

As for the KP argument:
Q: Do units off of the table at the end of a game count as
destroyed for kill point purposes? (p91)
A: Yes.
GW 40k Rulebook FAQ

So, although the model is still alive, it will give up a KP.

think of it like this,

models removed by Jaws arn't always killed(right away)

the ground has just swallowed them up and now they are buried under several thousand tons of rock.

not only has the victum been taken away to a certain death, but the body has also been removed from the area(and hence cannot come back during the battle. the necron will have to phase put back to the tomb world. the Trygon has been crushed and buried)

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

Heh, yep. Nothing in the FAQ or the INAT. The TO said that it would trigger the reaction, but my opponent said that we could 4+ it, so we did. Rolled a 5 and it ended up wiping a unit a of gaunts and leaving 2 others to hold the objective. Which they did, for the rest of the game.

Well, the rulebook states that casualties do not have to be deaths but rather knocked out, fatigue, or disabled xD.
But on topic, when I usually play, remove from play usually meant slain; enemy receives kill points.
