Looking through the swap shop forum while editing my own post, I thought of a suggestion. Right now... if you bump your thread early or illegally, you're "punished" with another bump later that day when the mods add a post stating why they're closing the thread. Would it be possible to instead just edit the offending post with the same info in the typical red color instead so that the early bumped threads aren't bumped yet again? Posts seem to slide down the front page pretty quickly even when everyone is following the rules and the mod-bumps accelerate that even though they're meant to help.

That's not a bad idea at all. Usually we just post the "Notice" post separately since it's easier/quicker to post and lock that way, but this option definitely has merits.

Or they could do as on other forums and delete the post, dropping the thread back to where it was in queue.

heck, you bump a thread on BT and they delete the entire thread.

the problem there is that the post is deleted without any indication of why, which is never a learning experience. pm'ing the author on top of that means double the work for unpaid volunteers who do this in their spare time. also, dakka (yak in particular since he's the co-owner who posted about it) has taken a more laid back buyer-beware approach to the swap shop in his posts there and deleting posts/threads conflicts with that.

Deleting a post doesn't move the thread back on Dakka's software.

So PM the OP and delete the thread.

otherwise, a MOD-bump advice post serves to only assist the seller and waste the MOD's time.

Double-negative.

Surprisingly, PMing takes up more time then simply post&locking.

Not true.

Most Mod PMs are a cut and paste.

He's speaking from experience, not hypothetically, AvatarForm... swapmods have to send PMs too, and unfortunately most of ours are not cut and paste, as the circumstances that require a PM are usually quite different.

I.e., we don't give out warnings for spam or have anything that generates an automatic warning PM. We also don't currently use "form letter" PMs for common infractions. The only "form letter" we have right now is the message we put in for locking bumped posts...

The OP suggestion in this thread is a great one, though, and will likely be implemented as much as we can.

Fair enough.

Though to cut down on time, perhaps you could implement a Form Letter for this purpose.
