thanks for all the birthday wishes...
here's to many more years of getting paid to paint toy soldiers, and sending silly photos to my clients so they can see how their heroic minis will be posed...
this is a Deathwatch Space Marine, armed with a power axe and storm shield, or a spatula and cutting board, depending upon what the Game Master decides to throw at him...

taking a break from Tiggi, i got some work done on Sgt. Chronus...
he is being painted in the same scheme as the majority of the vehicles in this Ultramarines army...
quick and dirty...

thanks for looking...

cheers

The weathering on the vehicles is looking very nice jah. You've made the libby look realy nice, quite amazing really when you consider what a terrible model it is, the yellow has some nice depth to it.

thanks, guys...

this is the last WIP for Tiggi, since he needs to be done tonight...
one more layer of yellow to go, and then just a few fine details to finish up...

here's his base, and the other two for Chronus and Cassius...

Chronus, himself, is coming along...

i'll get some better quality pics for the finished guys, but i am in way too much pain to take good photos today...
typical, on a night when i can't just take the evening off:(...
time to power through, and finish this Libby...

thanks for looking...

I hope all is well, Jah!

Your minis are looking great! You should be greatful that its only one layer of yellow and some details. Painting when your not feeling it, or not feeling well can make things drag.

Looking good! If you don't finish Tig tonight, you can just submit those WIPs to the challenge if you want, wouldn't want to rush you! I reckon he'd still be in with a good chance!

Yep, not even Jah can pull a miracle...

Don't get me wrong, the painting is GORGEOUS, that yellow can only be described as Juicy, but that miniature still remains so... FUGLY.

thanks, guys...

i tried to make Tiggy as cool as i could, given the short amount of time that i had to work on him...
a smooth yellow takes quite a few layers to get right...

i finished up the standing version of Sgt. Chronus...
i like this guy's funky armor, helmet, and backpack...
using the weathering style i applied to the vehicles made this guy pretty quick to paint up...
now i just need to finish up the tank commander version...

@Januine: i was always a fan of Dave Andrews' darker Ultramarines, so i was stoked when the client asked for a darker blue...

Throwback Thursday again...
taking it back, just a short hop, to 2013...
my first Infinity mini, painted for the Infinity Challenge here on Dakka...
the theme was "Dangerous Terrain, which is why i sculpted a snake on the base...
while she didn't make it through the public vote, i really enjoyed painting her...
it's not often i get to paint a woman, and this one is a particularly powerful one...

Yeah! I have to say, that Infinity mini looks gorgeous, I wish you had more Infinity clients

And geez, was that contest on 2013? I vaguely recall the contest. Damn, time flies!

thanks, you two...
i do have some Infinity stuff coming up, finally...
i'll have a sneak peek of the first one for you this week...

here is the tank commander version of Sgt. Chronus...
this is the ugly stage, after the first rust wash...
i didn't get any other WIP pics after these, so i'll show off the finished one tomorrow...

Nice to know even painters like you don't magically make everything perfect and you too have an ugly stage

oh boy, I have to admit, I'm excited to see what Infinity stuff you'll be painting.

@TheDraconicLord: in my opinion, the mini is in "the ugly stage" right up until it is finished...
the magic happens with the last brushstroke, when it all comes together...

here is the finished tank commander version of Ultramarines Sergeant Chronus...
since he makes your tank shoot better, i guess this is a pretty important half of a mini...
i had fun painting the buzzcut, the auspex return, and the open tank hatches...
i like thelook of the lighter interior color, which should contrast nicely against the dark colors of the tanks...

That really is an interesting technique to paint the power armour Jah, knowing how exact you can paint with blending and freehand work, I think that this more stylistic approach using a rust wash and more exposed metal chipping works just as well and looks exceptionally striking, so much so I want to try it on something myself :-) Cronus' face is brilliant too, the comparison between the armour and the softer tones of his skin being quite pale (cooped up in a tank will do that to you) is brilliant!

To me the ugly stage is the entire basecoat stage until the first shade is applied: the way how the miniature is half painted, the many mistakes until you tidy it all up, how it looks so bad without any shading of any kind, urgh, it gives me the creeps

Ah, I love the small details like the aupex. Really helps making the miniature feel "alive." And wow, how did you paint that buzzcut? A glaze of darkish grey? It looks mighty good!

(psst, don't forget about the Infinity sneak peek! )

@Januine: thanks, that was the idea i was going for...

@SJM: he has been a little busy directing the Stalkers to knock Flyrants out of the sky...

@nerdfest: it has been fun to switch up my technique, and try a different style...
not everyone is buying it, but the client is happy with it...
as to Chronus, yeah, i don't imagine he gets out a lot...

@TheDraconicLord: thanks...
i didn't write it down, so i am trying to remember if i used P3 Ironhull Grey, or P3 Trollblood Highlight...
i wanna say Trollblood, since i wanted him to look like he had grey hair, so went for a softer tone to the buzzcut...
it is just a few layers of glaze (very, very thin paint)...

here is the next mini on the chopping block, literally...
i never did like the stock head that was sculpted on Chaplain Cassuis...
it looked too much like a zombie...
i have always wanted an excuse to use the half-bionic head from the Devastator squad box, and i finally got it here...
the art has him depicted with a cool mohawk, so i also got my chance to try my hand at sculpting one...
it is a little big, which seems to be a common problem with first time sculpts, but i like it well enough to keep it...
it looks like a a Terminator/B.A. Baracus mash-up...

thanks for looking...
this should be a fun paintjob...

This is gonna be something I'll be watching :-) seeing your methods through a job like Cassius will help my own progression i'm sure! the head looks good and painted will certainly be different

the mohawk turned out alright, for a first attempt...
