I'm torn between a nid army or a necron army, I've played orks before and I want to start a new army. I want a cheap(cash-wise) army that is fun to model and paint. I'm just not sure which one to pick, also which one is more fun to play with and is strong. which one should i play? Any other suggestions besides nids or necrons?

Model wise 'nids can be the most expensive army depending on the list. There's also rumors of Necrons getting a update soon so they might have new models if you'd want to wait for that.

Necrons are allegedly coming out October/November. Warriors and Monoliths probably won't get new kits so those are safe bets. Not like most Necron players use much else anyways. The Battleforce is a great buy too.

Battleforce is a crazy good buy.
All the units are completely viable and can work together even.

Haha this is so true :( im a nid player and a friend of mine is a necrons player and i can already design lists at any points :(
All the necrons lists compile mostely of either monoliths warriors destroyers and a lord, and then either maybe a ctan.

If Necrons are up for consideration, I'd wait, as they are supposed to be the next 40K release.
Nids don't have the best codex in the grand scheme of things, but a good player can make them sing. It will probably be somewhat of an uphill battle against other optimized 5th edition armies, though.

Necrons are cool but one of the better things they get are destroyers which can be expensive. I would just get a battleforce and a lord with rez orb and a monolith to start, it would be cheapish about $150-$200 dpending on if you go internet deals or support your local gaming store/GW. This will give you
20 warriors
Monolith
3 Destroyers
Lord with Rez Orb
Some Swarms
Not sure on the points but it's a good start

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I actualy ran into the same thing...... Nids have more assault power then necrons (well except for Ctan ) and have some HUGE MONSTERS which are awsome. Necrons have more shooting and have WBB which is better then FNP and will get a new codex soon. Just my 2 cents.

It's about 1053 with what you listed (battleforce will come with more Warriors than 20 and roughly 8 possible scarabs but you need two spare 40mm bases).

Go for Necrons! They're getting a new codex fairly soon which will hopefully give us some goodies. And as people have said before the Necron Battleforce is one of the best out there.

As much as I'm excited about Necrons, not sure how much I can recommend them. Do you enjoy the actual playing, or the background lore? They're getting Ward'd next codex, so you know 2 things:
1.) They are going to be the new OMGWTFBBQ army. Look forward to all Warriors having FNP, 2 wounds, rending weapons, and cost 10 points each, as well as other left-field nonsense like, I don't know, the monolith spawning d6 deep striking destroyers per turn; and scarabs that can belch template melta...
and
2.) They're going to have the new wtf codex in... other ways, as well. I look forward the lords who can transform into hovercraft and who can challenge single HQ units to a freestyle rap-off for victory points, or a new C'Tan - Skullcron; who is made out of a giant skull, and has eyes made of skulls, when he opens his mouth, it shoots skulls, or perhaps background stories where the real reason Necrons are so 2x butthurt all the time is because they are the product of a human mother and a Honda pleasure droid, and one day their human daddy went to go get some cigarettes and never came back, so that's the real reason they reap the living.

Anyway, Necrons are coming out in in January, info which i got from GWM. but nids are not going to be a cheap army, far from it.
My necron 1750 and 1000 points is undefeated and i play a lot of competitive people at my local GW. Dashofpepper's necrons are also undefeated.

Nids are expensive... it's unbelieveable how much money i've tossed at my nids and I still don't feel "complete" whereas after 2 battleforces, a couple more destroyers (to make 10 total), regular lord & destroyer lord, monolith, and 3 heavy destroyers I'm pretty much set.
Just an example, lots of tournament lists have stuff like 40+ genestealers, 2-3 tervigons, LOADS of gaunts, 6 hive guards, 3 zoanthropes, etc. Its VERY pricey to piece together.

Nids aren't that expensive. I've bought 2 boxes of Hormagaunts, a box of Termagants, a box of Gargoyles, two boxes of Warriors and a Carnifex. That's filled out to nearly 1000 points with my FW Hive Tyrant. To get to 1500, a couple more boxes and a few blisters
Necrons are cheaper, but Nids are by no means expensive. They're probably the cheapest horde army. Orks and Imperial Guard will run you far, far more.

If you want to have more than one army build, Nids are expensive.
Owning both Armies, I'd say wait for the Necron Release. While Matt Ward writes terrible fluff, his rules are competitive and lasting. You already have a horde Army, why not start something more Elite? Nids are also supposed to be getting some new Models this fall as well, if you are still interested in them.
Honestly, I would start stashing some Money away, and wait until fall. You'll get to see some new Nid models, as well as the new Necron release that is supposed to come out. This way, you'll be able to buy everything you need if you choose either army.
