Hi there, I'm totally new to the painting and need help with tyranids (Well not entirely new, i did paint a very small amount, 5 maybe, of wh fantasy goblins 15 years ago, but however i'm very 'unskilled' atm).
I got a box of Termagants since i thought they are 'mass troops' and small so not a big issue if they don't look so good. Wouldn't be fun to start with a big unit and have it look 'sub-par'.

I have tried out a few ways to paint them and thinking black basecoat with with white drybrushing gets me a skin-look i find nice. Any way to improve the looks of the skin (only have basecoated and drybrushed it)

The main problem for me is the scales... They look like crap and i have no idea how to get them looking better. I've tried with white edges under the purple, it's a little better but not close to good enough.

Attached two images, the first have flesh-colored basing and just not looking neat at all. The second one i like the skin but the scales is crap.
Any tips, hints or tricks? Currently i only have some basic colors (no washes or anything) but i have a GW shop where i live so i can get colors/washes easily.
