"The very young may be indoctrinated into the Space Marines as Librarians; some may enter the Imperial Guard to begin their training as Primaris battle-psykers; the most talented may become Inquisitors or Grey Knights. "

My friends and I were chatting the other day, and I brought this to their attention and they all just shut up immediately. Until now, it didn't seem to cross our minds. Grey Knights and Inquisitors make sense for sure, but Librarians doesn't. How is it that they share the upbringing of their fellow battle brothers if they are just thrown into a chapter because they are psykers? Wouldn't they miss out on the aspect of the chapter being different from their culture on their planet, since they didn't grow up there? Is this just one of those "ignore what this says, its just like in Inquisition War where the Emperor is schizophrenic" moments?

Not all chapters recruit from just 1 planet; in fact that is a minority of chapters(Only Space wolves are purely Fenrisians AFAIK).

That said Ultramarines would take in very young psykers that are found within the Ultramar sector, Sallies on or around Nocturne, etc.

Most crusading chapters would take whatever psykers they find.

Finally as far as the whole culture thing goes; doesn't really matter what planet the aspirants come from, they will be around 12-16 years old when the marines take them in; then will go through brainwashing and hypno-therapy like all other Space marines, so would have the exact same Culture as the rest of their brothers.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Slightly off-topic, but the Salamanders only recruit from Nocturne, and have a widespread PSA campaign warning Nocturne's citizens to "Just Say No To Smurfs".

I believe they have an awesome commercial too...

"This is your brain..."

"This is your brain... ON SMURFS!"

"Any questions?"

So basically these are sent to the fleet based Chapters that don't have a homeworld to recruit from is what you're saying?

"'This is your brain.' I've seen a lot of weird [penguins] on drugs. I have never ever ever ever EVER looked at a [frackin] egg and thought it was a brain." - Bill Hicks

They could be sent to the fleet chapters, they could be snapped up by the IG to be sanctioned psykers. They could be served to the Big E in a bowl covered with frosty cold moo-juice. A psyker born on an astartes controlled world may have a better chance of joining that chapter, but for a psyker born on a random rock the 41st millennium is a dangerous place to be. "Suffer not the mutant to live" and whatnot.

I don't belive the Black Ship's recruits are sent to Space Marine Chapters. I suspect its old fluff.

only the Grey Knights get the pick of the Black Ships cargo. the rest either end up as Sanctioned Psykers, lucky ones can become Inquisitors, the rest are sacrificed to the Astronomican.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Yeah this is what I had thought. It would seem weird for some guy on Thracian Primaris who was psychic gets to join the Marines Errant as a librarian, also he now follows the naming conventions of that chapter now as well.

Yeah, chapter librarians usually are recruited from the same place everyone else is.

only the GKs pick from the Black ships and they probably sift through thousands of weaklimbed individuals to find a single candidate.
