Hello readers,

I was 12 years old when I first became interested in 40k. It was near the end of third edition at that time. I began collecting an ork army of the Deathskullz clan. After losing every game for a solid year, and with the social pressures of high school, I stopped playing. Now that I am two years out of high school, and have met other like-minded people, I have picked up the hobby again. This time I am collecting an Imperial Guard army.

Let me start with my goals of this thread. The purpose of this blog is to:
- Motivate me to complete a fully painted and based 2,000 point army
- Learn new painting and modelling skills
- Become more a part of the Dakka community

Now, without further ado, the pictures!

Captain Spranick - Company Commander

Captain Morland - Master of Ordnance

Sergeant Fencer

CAM-291 "Camel" APC (chimera) WIP

Well, that's a start.

I will use this thread to post works in progress, completed models, battle reports, fluff, and fiction.

This was my first experience painting guard and just miniature painting in general since I was thirteen years old. I want to improve my skills, so I appreciate all of your feedback and involvement in this thread.

Cheers.

@kenshin The apc is from here:

I will try to pick out the eyes. The only thing I am worried about is my shakey hand making the model look worse instead of better. Perhaps I will try on a less important guardsman first.

I've actually been working on my orks in preparation for a tournament. I'm becoming more attached to them than my guard, because I find them more fun to paint.

I live in Jamaica Plain. The gaming clubs I go to are mainly Evil Dice at the Hobby Bunker in Malden, and sometimes Harvard 'Ard Boyz at Pandemonium.

I have to start going back to the Hobby Bunker/Evil dice group. My sundays got eaten for the past few months, but they should be clearing up after GenCon. I'll try and catch you there!

If you're wondering why I'm not posting any progress, there are two reasons:

1. My camera failed and I have not had access to one for months now.

2. I haven't made much progress.

Luckily, my friend let me borrow his camera today. Once I figure out how it works, you will see pictures of what little headway I have made with my minis.

Thanks for the support!

Thanks Brian! Let me make some commentary.

I've been working on orks in preparation for a kill-team recon tournament. I was cramming to finish my group of orks on the last day before the tournament when I found out in the middle of the afternoon that the event had started at 10 o'clock that morning. Needless to say: .

On the bright side, that tournament encouraged me to complete that there nob you see above. I also made some purty cool lootas (which you will see in subsequent posts).

Any way, I feel pretty motivated to do some more work on my guard now (especially since Brian's toilet paper threat), so expect some wip's of some "sentinels" soon...

Did you see that? That, my friend, is a literary technique called "foreshadowing".

Also, expect some background on the Opscalx Fortune Company that will answer questions like, "What's with that weird name?"

Good morning world.

As promised, here are the lootas I've been working on. I feel like they look pretty good as from afar, but I want to make them more detailed. I want to learn how to make rivets, and perhaps add some battle damage. I also want to drill out the barrels, but we'll see. Those are all things that I've never done before, so I'm open to any advice or suggestions.

Loota #1 (I'm taking name suggestions)

Loota #2

So I need three things from you. Which one do you like better? What should their names be? and What's your advice on how to make them look better?

Thanks for reading!

It is time for some background!

Opscalx Luna - The Blue Moon

Location: Opscalx System, Charadon Sector

Size and gravity: 0.8 x Terra

Description: The moon orbits the gas giant Decorus Furor. The surface is covered in opaque azure crystals, known as opscalx, ranging in size from 2mm to 1.4 km. When first settled, the moon had no atmosphere or water. Centuries of terraforming now see this moon as a scarcely habitable place with a very light and heavily regulated atmosphere. Since the moon does not rotate, massive atmospheric generators are distributed across its surface to create air circulation and ensure that the atmosphere does not dissipate. Travel outside of the mining outposts is harsh, and requires a substantial supply of oxygen and water.
One side of the moon perpetually faces Decorus Furor. That side sees eternal dim orange light, as if lit by a sodium street lamp. The dark side of the moon is unsettled because of its extreme cold temperatures.

Climate: The light side and dark side of Opscalx Luna have vastly different climates. The temperature on the light side ranges from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature on the dark side of the moon fluctuates between -300 degrees Fahrenheit, to -100 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on whether or not it is facing the system's sun.
Wind and precipitation is all regulated by the atmospheric generators. There is no rainfall; instead, the atmospheric generators ensure that a certain humidity level is reached. There are no bodies of water on the surface.

History: Opscalx Luna was first settled in 786.M40, by rogue traders who were intrigued by the odd psychic disturbance that emanated from the moon. They quickly saw the unique stones that made up the surface of Opscalx to be a source of profit, and set up a mining outpost. The stones were sold to nobles to make beautiful and ostentatious rockcrete. The outpost grew rapidly as opscalx was sold in great quantities to more and more customers.
Opscalx quickly earned its nickname, the "Fortune Stone," and the descendents of the rogue traders who initially established the mining outpost became very wealthy rulers of the planet.
854.M40 - a small group of Dark Eldar were spotted above the moon. The small PDF forces mobilized to eradicate the threat. The battle was hard-fought, and many casualties were sustained, but the Dark Eldar fled after a short time. The parliament of Opscalx quickly made the decision to scale up the size of their PDF force.
Small groups of Dark Eldar have been encountered many times since. Because of their small numbers, they seemed to not intend to assault the Imperials. Instead, it appeared as if they were searching for something.
729.M41 - The Departmento Munitorum requests that Opscalx Luna provide a tithe of five regiments for the Imperial Guard.

Population Breakdown: Approx. 46,000,000 total
38,000,000 - Mining industry
3,000,000 - Administratum
2,000,000 - Other industry
2,000,000 - local trade and commerce
1,000,000 - PDF forces
1,000 - Ruling Class (Parliament, Noble Ministers)

A note on the PDF and the "other industry":
Because of the need to increase military capacity, the parliament of Opscalx Luna enlisted a sizable group of techpriests to create a manufactorium on the moon's surface that would create the PDF's vehicles. They decided to build wheeled vehicles as opposed to tracked because of the moon's flat surface. The lack of difficult terrain and the need to compete with the maneuvreability of the Dark Eldar compelled the tech-priests to go forward with the idea. They then proceeded to create new STCs on the moon's surface that would construct the war vehicles of Opscalx. The two most prominent and honored inventions were the CAM-291 "Camel" APC and the JAC-30 "Jackal" Assault Car.

I hope you enjoyed reading. Now, for your viewing pleasure, here are some Jackals!:

The JAC-30 and JAC-29 (obvious works in progress)

Thanks for reading.

@Brian: How was GenCon? I can obviously tell you had a good time.

@sennacherib: The vehicles are from here: http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/
As for rivets, thanks for the advice! I assume I would be able to find the appropriate size hole puncher at my local hobby store, am I correct?

Thanks for stopping by! I was getting bored of talking to myself.

I do want to start writing up fluff for the guard company itself, but I'm going to try to throw in some more pictures so as to not overwhelm you with text. Maybe I can stop by my flgs today to get a hole puncher and start doing those rivets, or I can do some more work on the camel or jackals, or I can finish painting my plasma gunners (whom you have not seen yet), or I can get a haircut and do my laundry.

Decisions, decisions...

Goodmorning Daksters.

I just wanted to let you know that I haven't abandoned the hobby. Work has been pretty slow-going, however. I became bored with my guard and my orks, so I needed a little break. Hopefully I'll have some more progress to show you soon!

Here's my workstation. (One of these things is more complete now than it was when I took the picture last night. Can you guess what it is?)

Two things:

1. I entered myself into Matt.Kingsley's ork vehicle contest. I plan on making a killa kan or two. The progress of which will be shown on this blog.

2. Does anyone know how to change thread titles? I feel that mine is a little misleading. The main focus of the thread is the Opscalx company. However, focus is a state of being that I have never been able to achieve, and therefore, you will see more than just guard on this blog.

On an unrelated note, I start college in two weeks. I'm going for a five-year double major bachelors/masters program, with a bachelors in some kind of history, and masters in Elementary Education. I will also be working during this time. Needless to say, I will be busy.

Thanks for the feedback, Alabamaheretic. I would agree that the nob is my best painted model. It's also my most recently painted model. A few of the things I need to work on are detailing, highlighting, and making the skin look good on the guardsmen.

I'll be sure to check your blog out.
