Heya guys,
For this year's Battle for the Shrine, a charity event hosted by my flgs (check it out here http://battlefortheshrine.webs.com/ ), I'm building a 10 ft warmachine table. I wanted to post some pics up to track a bit of the progress and hopefully stir up some extra motivation. I've got about 3 weeks left to finish the whole thing.

The table is supposed to be a train yard somewhere in Khador, and I wanted it to be covered, for the most part, in riveted metal sheets. It will be built in three pieces: two 4x4 tables with 1 2x4 section in between. I'm also building an O gauge track that will run the length of the table. One of the objectives on the last table will be a switch that will decide whose edge the train leaves the table on.

I'm usually a stickler for taking decent photos but my camera has gone MIA. I took these photos with my phone and it pains me to upload them but they seem to have come out well enough (for a phone) and I think they will suffice. I'll keep up the search and with any luck I'll be able to offer some better photos in the future.

This is an early WiP shot of the first table. Running this thread was a bit of an afterthought so I don't have any earlier. I had finished laying the sheets on much of the first three corners of the table and had already riveted most of the first corner. The metal sheets are just made out of random pieces of cereal box thickness cardboard. The rivets are punched out of the same material with a 1/16th inch hole punch. I also cut out random channels to run pvc pipe in.

Here's a more complete picture of the first table. All the sheets have been put down and have been riveted. There's 3475 individual rivets on this table alone. I'm estimating the full ten foot table will have somewhere between 7 and 10 thousand. I've also run two of the three pipe sections for this table. I need to get back to home depot to get some more fittings for the other pipe sections. I've also finished assembling the track sections for this table. The rails are plastic H columns with one side cut off to make a T shape and they are laid on balsa strips. I'm going to be putting down ballast on the rest of the exposed table but I've been waiting for the weather to clear up so I can do that part outside. It's been raining pretty steady for the last week or so and there's no real end in sight.

These are just a couple of closeup shots of the plates, track and also a water tower that I've been working on for the table. The scenario will have rules for destroying the water tower so I will be putting together a ruined version of it as well.

This is the center section of the table as far as it's come. The two pieces in the center have been cut out to create a sort of drain channel with culverts running between them. This will also create a little bit of a bottleneck in the center of the table once the train, which will be a moving objective in itself, has passed on to the last table. I will add a few small pipes in the walls to drain into the channels as well.

That's as far as it has come so far. Got the day off from work tomorrow so I'm hoping to get a bunch done tomorrow.
My friend, Rhich, is putting together a centerpiece for the 40k table at BftS. If you haven't already, you can check out his blog here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/368995.page

Also, if you're interested, you can check out the terrain pieces I built for the two previous BftS here

Sweet, we need more PP stuff on dakka.

Great work so far, love the metal everywhere.

Are you going to add water effects to the centre drain channel? That would look sweet imo.

That's the plan. I'm going to add a couple drain pipes on the sides as well with water pouring into the channel.

Got a little more done so far today. Decided to take a break from the center section and start building the track sections for the third table. Not too much to show today, just a couple of WiP shots of one of the track sections and a shot of the third table with the track laid out.

This is as far as I had gotten with the track today. I made some miscalculation when drawing the last (missing) section on the mdf board and after I cut it I found it didn't run on target so I have to dig out another sheet of mdf and give it another go.

Also, I have discovered that the age old advice " don't cut towards yourself " applies not only to knives but to dremel tools. I was beveling the edges on one section of roadbed and slipped with the dremel which came at me and got all wound up in my shirt!

I saw this the other day and sadly didn't have time to comment.

Possibly one of the best tables I've seen. The riveted plates, culverts and pipes have given me some inspiration for making my Necromunda board. Edit - How did you keep yourself sane glueing the rivets down?

I'm really looking forward to seeing more and seeing it painted.

Thanks

Peter

Thanks guys! I'm sorry I really don't have any progress to post about; the sun has finally been out the last couple days and some outside time just seemed a little more appealing. Tomorrow night is game night for me but Saturday I should be getting quite a bit done. Deadline is going to be coming up real quick so I'm hoping to have assembly done by the end of next week so I have all of the following week to paint. Last year I was up until 12 the night before painting and I would really rather not do that again!

PDH wrote: How did you keep yourself sane glueing the rivets down?

Honestly, it's hasn't been as bad as you would think, not for me anyway. I just put on some music or a book on tape and go to town. It's almost relaxing. Of course I'll probably be singing a different tune by the end of next week!

Sorry for the boring update, more pics on Saturday.

If it's not one thing, it's two things, or three.

And as such was the case today, I got less finished than I had hoped, which seems to be a recurring theme. But nevertheless, I have a couple more WiP pics to share as promised.

Today I worked on the center of the three tables and started off by finishing up the plates on the walls of the drain channels. This was a wonderful way to start off the day. I've had minor issues with plates here and there that did not want to stick or would curl up at the ends. Today, however, this was every single plate I tried to glue down. Very frustrating. After that I put together the culvert pieces and a couple of drain pipes.

Here's a couple assembly shots of the culvert sections. Nothing crazy, just a 2 inch something cardboard tube cut into 1 inch sections and then in halves mounted on a thick piece of card.

Culverts and drain pipes riveted and mounted in the channel.

and a shot of the table thus far

also managed to get a bunch of rivets glued down. This is where I fell a bit short of my goal for the day. I was hoping to at least get half the table riveted but was only able to finish about one third of it. Hard to say how much will get done tomorrow; work in the morning and bbq after but Monday should be wide open.
Anyway.. there it is so far.

Well its often a case of quantity over quality but in this case it is definitely quality over quantity which is really rather a good thing.

Thanks for the run through on the drains/pipes. Adding the backing card really adds to the detail.

Enjoy the bbq

Peter

Spent the better part of the day working on the table and I'm glad to say I got quite a bit done. I also found my camera so the picture quality should be a bit better. Most of the time was spent gluing down rivets so there's really not too much to report. The final count on the second table is 2483 bringing the total between the first and second tables to 6228. I think I might be right out of my mind. I was also able to get down the sand in the center of the table.

I was debating on whether to only glue sand up to the edge of the plates or to overlap them a bit and decided to mix it up and do a bit of both. I think I'll go back and add a bit more sand. The sharp edges don't quite look right. The sand still needs to be sealed and I still need to put down a couple more coats of glue on the rivets to help to keep them from coming off. I've got to stop at Home Depot tomorrow and pick up the rest of the pvc fittings that I need for this table and the next one.

I'm excited because this table especially is starting to look like something. I can't wait to get some paint down. This one will have to be painted first. I'll need to allow myself two or three days, I think, to lay down the water effects so they can cure in time.

Well, there it is for now.

It's been a couple days since my last update. I didn't want to bore everyone with too much of the same. So, at long last.... some more of the same. If you're not tired of it yet, I certainly am.

I finished riveting the third table tonight. The count on this table, being 1971, brings the total so far to 8199. There shouldn't be more than another hundred left on the couple of pipe sections that I need to put together. I'll probably get this done tomorrow. I'm also hoping to get all of the sand down on all three tables tomorrow as well. The train track sections are all assembled except for one little odd piece for the first table, they are also needing sand. After that all that's left is paint.

Here's the third table in it's current state still wet with glue. One edge of the insulation foam curves down and it hadn't occurred to me that this side should be on the bottom so both of the large tables needed to be filled in the center.

A closeup shot of some of the detail. Nothing new really.

The plates on this table are a little more sparse. This is partly because I wanted to break up the monotony a bit as if the train yard was coming to an end, and partly out of necessity. I need to have the tables finished in seven days, for Sunday, and I've been told that I'm busy on Saturday (which I was really hoping to have to finish everything up).

So, there you have it. With any luck I'll have some painted pictures real soon.

Don't have to tell me lol. This one is starting to make me more than a little nervous. I also need to build a ruined version of the water tower and some sort of switch house objective. You gonna be painting yours at base camp? I was hoping to get up there this week before Sunday but that's not looking like a possibility. I also wanted to break in my shiny new table before I deliver it!

Excuse the lack up updates over the last couple days. All my free time has been spent on the table; haven't had a second to spare for a post.

I am glad to say that the table 99.9% finished, thanks to unreasonable amounts of Mountain Dew and more sleepless nights than is good for a person's sanity. I've just a couple of minor finishing touches to take care of tomorrow night and she'll be ready to go for Sunday.

So, stay tuned. I'll have lots of pics for you guys on Monday.
