I'm new to the whole W40k modeling scene and I have a few questions about non-GW models. First, I am creating a guard army and am using Westwind British Tommy heads ( can't find campaign hats). Is that okay? Secondly, I want to use a crossley armored car from brigade games as a sentinel or salamander stand in and finally for missile launchers I was going to use Askari miniatures Krupp 75mm mountain howitzers with GW/westwind head crew. Also was going to use some pack animals from askari for my heavy bolter stands. I'm going for a U.S. Punitive expedition theme and these are kinda crucial I think though suggestions would be much appreciated.

The rule of cool tends to apply everywhere except GW stores. If you want to use counts-as then it helps if your force is well thought out and consistent, e.g. you shouldn't use the Howitzers as both lascannon and MLs. Other than that, go crazy and have fun (also post pics!)

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Thanks man I will, am going to get the paint to do a test model today if I've got the money. Scheme is going to be kinda bland I fear though. Heres my inspiration.

I'm all for converted guard armies. I've done a few in my time and in my experience they have the most scope for conversions.

My only suggestion, is that while converted armies are cool, just try and makes sure that the look like they belong in the 40k universe.

For example, lascannons are pretty iconic looking, and as such the model you're using to represent one should always look vaguely like a regular lascannon. Just with your own personal spin on it ya know?

Also, if using historical kits for your vehicles try and "grimdark" them up. So chunky armour plates, rivets and thick tires etc.

You want your opponent to still feel like they're playing a 40k game, not a historical re-creation.

That said, this sounds like a great idea for an army and I can't wait to see some completed models

Scratch the Valkyrie, Vulture as I think it fits the role of the JN-3/R-2 better. No transport and at one point the 1st aero was supposed to get R-2's with lewis guns, bombs and cameras. Also still has two man crew. Finally gonna add a squad of rough riders if I get the chance.

Black-rabbit: I will I plan on def adding Aquila's all over the armored car and putting a heavy weapons auto-cannon on it. Also the howitzers are supposed to be missile launchers and I'm hoping that HW team mortar rounds will look like fitting ammunition. I figure my regiment is from a feudal world, hence the lower tech and increase in horses. Thanks for the tips, I don't know how to make the howitzers more 40ky though so any help would be awesome.
