The GW website has nothing on Tau terrain, but there's a forum called Advanced Tau Tactica, which has a fair few examples.

The flat bases are a mouse mat holder which holds a mouse mat and a wrist rest. I got those from the rubbish bin at the office. I part filled the recesses with plastic card.

The big tanks are plastic yoghurt cartons. When cemented down with Araldite, I drilled a hole though the floor to let the air pressure equalise.

The roof top is embossed plastic card. The “chimneys” are a piece of plastic rod with a drawing pin. The manhole cover is from EMA Model Supplies.

http://www.ema-models.co.uk/index.php/coloured-butyrate-tube-fittings/manways.html

The items at the rear of the piece are from Antenociti’s Workshop.

http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/fuel-stations-x2.html
http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/secondary-heat-exchanger.html

I assembled the yoghurt carton onto the mouse pad, leaving off the roof and the pumps and plastic card in the smaller recess so I could paint them separately.

I primed everything with grey spray primer. Then sprayed the piece with textured paint. Sprayed the roof and pumps with a non-textured paint which matches Bleached Bone.

I assembled the roofs and pump parts with Araldite, and put the transfers on. Then weathered with sand and inks. Finally I varnished the whole thing.

I’ve got four of these. Action pics here give a good idea of size...

When building terrain I try to scavenge as much as possible for free, and spend money on good detailing parts.

Japanese Soup Bowl

Japanese Soup Bowl and fancy shampoo container, mounted on a DVD

I collect interesting looking objects and spray them with primer and textured paint, or primer and colour paint, depending on the finish I want.

Plastic card is useful for various purposes.

Detailing parts can be got from places like Antenociti's Workshop.

Tau stuff tends to be rounded, efficient, clean, and 90%+ solid looking. by solid i mean it looks like one seamless piece. Depending on the variety, yogurt containers might work for tiny pod-domiciles.

The other thing that comes to mind is mushroom shape. Have a look at any images you can come across from Dawn of War, specifically, tau structures.

It was moved because it is a modelling topic, so the Painting & Modelling forum is the best place to get responses.

My domes and stuff are meant to be an advance camp built using simple modular designs. It's really easy to turn a soup bowl into a dome.

I'm working on some more complex stuff using foamcore board, hardboard, insulating foam and so on. The first example is my landing pad from the battle report.

I'm not 100% happy with it but as a proof of concept and trial piece it's fine. I'm going to revisit it later in the year.

The pale yellow structures in the foreground with the dark tops are Marks & Spencer Dim Sum Prawn Dumpling boxes. Very cheap, very easy to do.

The GW site used to have a lot of pics of Tau terrain, and even had articles on how to make it. You know, back when they wanted to you make terrain instead of just buying plastic kits...

The Tau codex should have some examples, and I believe the main rulebook should have a pic or two.

But when I was in the UK last year, I went by the GW HQ in Nottingham. These bits of terrain may be relevant to your interests:

I've been told the tower in the top pic looks like an agitator in a washing machine. Hope this helps as a starting point!

1.) The PC game Dawn of War Dark Crusade features a lot of Tau buildings that you can try to copy.
2.) Forge World has some Turrets that help create Tau atmosphere: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Tau/TAU-TURRETS?filter_reset=1
3.) Scotia Grendel has a line with small buildings in a fitting style, but most are too small (25mm). But the Hospital Dome looks right:

4.) I found this Air Raiders Command Outpost (OOP) to be a good basis for a conversion:

If you can get ahold of the 3rd edition Tau codex, there was a page dedicated to Tau terrain. Essentially, it was potting plants with plasticard and rod details added on.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

If you have the How to make terrain book by GW, there's a couple of examples as well as a whole tau themed board.

Dakka and it's members do not, of course, condone or encourage the illegal distribuition of copyrighted materials, this includes links, directions etc etc to where such things might be obtained. ... okay..
