Ahh! You spend all this time, blood, sweat and tears painting a mini to the best of your ability and some hater, who probably can't paint a barn door with an 8" roller gives your work some stupid, jealous rating coz they've got nothing better going on in they're sad little lives.
It's not constructive, if it was they'd comment and tell you why they didn't like it but no they just vote your work down and don't give other aspiring painters the right to see your work and be inspired to progress.
I can take low marks from great artists but not from "splashers" with no eye for colour who chuck paint on a mini like an office worker on a paintball "team building day".
You know who you are and should be ashamed of your jealous nature. If you don't like my work tell me why and we can both be better people.

Who cares what they think; the fact you posted this validates their actions and encourages them. Enjoy more trolls.

People who simply give negative comments with no indication of how you can improve get on my wick, some people are just starting afterall, and some just aren't that good at paintng. Like me.

Explanations often work. I'm confused what item in your gallery is so low that it must have come from someone that is jealous of your abilities... I've gotten 1 picture with enough votes to receive a rating, and its sporting like a 5.5...

I'm really not seeing which gallery image you're griping about the lowest rated one I saw was 7.5 and it only had 4 voters one of which was you. Of those 3 voters two of them had more or almost the same number of gallery images with quiet frankly not bad painting in them. Left only one voter.

I'm going to leave this thread open, in the hopes that a useful conversation will evolve. I would suggest being a bit more specific in the original post, though - maybe posters here can provide the constructive feedback and/or validation that the anonymous voting didn't?

I think we've all learned something this day, you can view who voted on your pictures, so they no longer need to be nameless.

I will say this, that shoulder work is insane! I wish I could achieve details and crispness like that

Yeah your all pretty bang on with your replies and I shouldnt be such a massive dick about poor votes and your also right that I shouldn't care about votes good or bad but it's hard to know why something's been voted down when no comments are left. If I knew why someone didn't like my work it would give me the ability to learn and progress otherwise bad votes are hate for hates sake.
I think before I vote and always offer advice to aspiring painters. I know I shouldnt judge everyone by my own actions and yes that does make me as much of a dick as them your right. At least I can admit when I've been a massive tool. I have learnt from this and will try not to be such an "up my own self loving arse" type from now on. Humility wins out in the end.

really, i could care less what the internet thinks of my work, its what the people around me think, hell my cron list has been destroyed here on dakka saying i would get phased turn 2 of every game, i took that list to 4 tourney's this last year and placed 1'st in one and top 3 in the others ( and their are no destroyers or monolith in that list). you should have that same concept. go to tourney's talk to people you havent talked to before learn from the people around you not some faceless internet anomaly. hell even the people in your local gaming group. their are people in mine that have been in this game for years that i will always feel to critique my work.

Hey, at least your photos get votes, right?

It is obvious that art is in the eye of the beholder. Neither of us would argue that. What could be a 7 to one person could be a 9 to another.

However, I think any talented painter would be slightly amiff if his work was given a 0 or a 1 without some constructive critisism explaining the low rating. And yes, you are not the first talented artist who has complained of bum scores. Similarily, I often become exasperated when I see a model that is given a painting score of a 8-10...when it is only primed. Ultimately, the ratings are meant to be a tool for both the artist and the gaming community at large. If posters go around giving meaningless rankings than the tool becomes less effective.

Personally, I would prefer if artist's disabled voting on all of thier WIP (which is what I have started doing) as well as post complied pics of thier work shown at different angles rather than single pics of each pose. I just think it would be more usefull if the gallery boards were not clogged up with numerous stages of the same work of art (which has happened in the past). Then if you saw a finished model you particularily liked, you could always click on the owner's gallery and explore his WIP photos or links to his P&M threads.

Now that's helpful and constructive and advice I'm gunna follow. Thank you for spending the time to help me out of my ego bubble mate. Suffice to say I have learnt my lesson. Thanks again.

Good to see your rage has subsided and the fact that you've realised your mistake might make my reply look a bit harsh...but you seem to have scored 10/10 for painting an Artemis head. Seems pretty generous to me. That's an understatement. There's a few 8+ in there too, for WIPs. What are you looking for exactly? Tens? Get yourself over to coolmini and see how you like it over there.

But yeah you need to upload some more finished pics imo, and the fact that, whilst clear and in focus, your pics are craptastically framed next to paint pots and the like, doesn't help either.

That said your style looks good and much love to you for your choice in miniatures, keep up the good work with the =][= range.

Never had contact with someone over-critical, but I think ratings are lower than real life reactions because our rating is compared to pieces that are impossibly godd looking, pushing down the rating.

Well one good thing out of this for me, is the ability to see who voted for your stuff. I am going to go through my galleries and look at the links to those who voted for my stuff and return the kindness!

Still, I don't know if the OP was complaining about recieving a 7-8 or if he was complaining about recieving a 0-3. As I said earlier, one person's 7 might reasonably be anther person's 9. However, one person's 2 should never equate to another's 9...doing so completely destroys the usefullness of the ranking system, which inconveniences not only the artist but the community at large.

With your forum account tied directly to your gallery it's also possibly someone just took an opportunistic chance to down vote your gallery based on a forum comment they didn't like.

I didn't know that but I don't often write in forums. I think some people vote you down if your picture stays in the gallery mainpage for too long. I've stopped worrying, I've apologised more tonight than in the whole rest of my life ha ha

I disable voting on my submissions, WIP and finished, by default because certain members seem to object to them and call them a waste of space.

Low ratings happen, I do not do them, if nothing nice to say sort of thing.

Out of curiosity, how do you guys rate? For me I choose to start the rating at 5, painted table top. I will not rate anything lower but if asked I will give verbal feedback, not really my part to message someone whose stuff is not to a standard I like for my models. If it is good for them, it is good enough. I will do a quick break down.

5-tabletop, 3 colors no sloppy paint (if it is sloppy like gold paint is on the trim of a shoulder pad and on the shoulder pad itself where the 2 colors meet -1)
6-tabletop with basing
7-Above table top, highlights evident, basing good
8-Obviously above TT, can include drybrushing, wet blending, and or layering more than likely. Also great basing or extra work in the paint can make it here.
9-10, exceptional painting and basing. Crisp lines, well done freehand, complementary basing etc. Shows a mastery of painting techniques that sets it apart from those I would rate an 8.

Most models I choose to vote on fall in the 6-8 category with me. As always this is subjective and just a guideline I use.
