You're pretty safe. They have a current, 5th edition codex so don't expect a new one at least until 6th edition...

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

No, not even close. IG is one of the updated armies, there are a slew of books that will come before them.
Worst case scenario, 6th edition comes out next year and IG usually is one of the first few books to come out after a new edition. So you have a couple of years at least.

Guard came out in April 2009; I wouldn't expect anything sooner than 2014 for a new codex. Theirs is one of the best in the game.

IG is solid. They're not at the top of the power curve, but they're nowhere near the bottom, and they have modern rules. They won't be seeing an update for a while.

They're generally considered to be, actually.

That must be why they're winning all the big tournaments out there... no wait, that's SW

IG is definitely tied with DE for "best" codex overall. Even if SW are best for pure powergaming, IG has plenty of options for all sorts of themes, and while not all of them are tournament-worthy, you can certainly make a strongly themed list and expect to do well against most opponents.

Well even if they were to release 6e tomorrow I doubt you would have to buy different mini's, I really doubt they are going to lose troops like the inquisition did.

Matthew's rules aren't that bad. They are internally more balanced than Cruddance's IG or especially Tyranids. IG is a potent potent codex, but it has a lot of stupid in it too.

Imperial Guard have one of the most powerful Codex's out there with Mechanized being the main choice of most IG players. I don't know about the overall circuit but I do know that the St Valentines Day Massacre GT I attended in February which had 60+ players had at least 5 of them using Mech Guard and all 5 ended up in the top 10 with number 1 being...you guessed it Mech Guard. In fact most players at my FLGS and the tournaments I attend use Mech Guard when they want to win.
As for Matt Ward, his rules are actually very well done and although they can be confusing at times like with the GK codex he typically writes very powerful Codexes and I know most of you will say, "Well thats because he writes all MEQ books!" I will point you then to the Imperial Guard Codex which wasn't written by him. His fluff, however, is absolutely atrocious and should never be read by human eyes. Phil Kelly on the other hand writes really awesome fluff but his rules are really terrible and not competitive, I will point you to the Dark Eldar Codex. I know some of you will disagree with me but I'm just going off of what I see at tournaments and my local FLGS.

Dark Eldar are the closest to a perfect codex there is right now. They are extremely capable, you just have to really know the rules and what you are doing. They are very different from mech IG or Space Wolves, where you just pick targets and roll dice and your opponent picks up stuff off the table.

If GW are working on a 4 year cycle, and it looks likely given what codexes they have done so far and what is left to do (all the major armies and all the minor armies that have 3rd ed codecies), then 6th ed will be in late 2012 and new IG will be in 2013 - that's at the earliest.

IG do certainly seem to have a wide variety of stuff that can be put into a normal friendly game and still be useful, and like you said that gives a wide variety of themes - they can even do CC as long as they're not put against a CC specialist army

IMO DE are perfect at being DE - very strong but difficult to use - but on v.big tables or against someone who can keep them out of CC they are very weak and it seems that it's difficult to write a list where all the units "sync" together (I don't paly them myself though so could be wrong); where-as IG have a really flexible codex which can produce a lot of different and powerful lists.

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....
First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint |

They don't need assault, they can outshoot any other codex in a straight up firefight, except for some Guard lists, on account of Guard being tough as nails with their AV12 and massive numbers. They're a glass cannon: they can be the best at shooting, they can be the best at assault, and they'll always outmaneuver anything else, but they're rock bottom as far as taking a punch goes, though FnP does a great deal to mitigate that, once one gets it.
