hey dakka, i'm making a life sized Drach'nyen, the weapon will be crafted out of foam to be used for boffer larp combat, yes i'm a larper.
Drach'nyen is abbabababbabababadon's demon sword, and i have always love the art work from the 2nd ed chaos marine codex cover, it's how i imagened every demon weapon every looking. so i'm trying to bring it to life.
(if i'm posting this blog in the wrong section i'm sorry i saw some one else had their
40k props and costuming here i thought it would be ok, if i did. If i am posting in the wrong section i apologize)
Couple of design notes
I'm not making the weapon true scale, even with my awesome foam it would be just too unwieldy i imagine that abbadon is roughly 9-10 tall in terminator armor, and thus from the scale i've gotten from the acutal model and the art work the sword varies in length, but it should be about 7-8 feet long. Instead i'm scaling it back to be long enough for me to use i'm 6'1 out of armor, and thus the weapon is about.. 5 feet, plus however long the handle ends up being.
larp combat- the weapon is being made so i can hit weapon with it, thus it will be constructed to meet the safety standards of normal larp combat meaning it's not going to be exact copy of his sword. also it's durable enough for a bunch of us nerds to savagely run around and beat each other with it.
i'm basing my design for the weapon mostly off the 2nd chaos marine codex taking some artist license with it as well.
Step one:
I make a template of the weapon using thick card stock, this will be used as the pattern of the weapon.
step two: i cut the foam out using the pattern i just made and i glue it together and to the core of the weapon (this process takes a while 2 hours for me, and is a bit more complex then i'm letting on, but i dont want to bore you guys with details)
and another shot of it
Now i glue more foam to buff up the cross guard
now i go though with a marker and start drawing in the detail that i'm going to shape/ crave out of the blade
that's it for now more to come soon.
