I put together this tutorial video a little while back to explain the intricacies of getting decals on the most difficult of surfaces. The techniques apply to any surface but this is sort of a worst-case-scenario video.

I'm really struggling to get my transfers onto my Marine's shoulders. It's a circular design (Flesh Tearers) so there's nowhere to cut an incision, which would help. There's always a sort of fold at the centre top. I'm not sure what to do.

Another suggestion that I saw for dealing with these problems is to soak the decals in the setting solution instead of water at the start of the process. I haven't tried this technique myself, but I can see how it might help.

The thing is, the GW decals are incredibly thick so this makes them hard to deal with - especially the circular markings as you point out. The softening solutions, combined with brushing out the wrinkles really help with the problem. It can takes several tries to get all of the wrinkles out, though. Of course, with the GW decals... they are far more work than they should be.

I have sheets and sheets and sheets of decals. I had given up on trying them thinking that for some reason my talents simply did not lie in that direction. Damn you. Now I need to buy some MicroSol...

Very nice tutorial, I use the same technique putting the decals on my Blood Angels, The only difference is I soak the GW decal in microsol instead of water and before I slide the transfer onto the shoulder pad I put a layer of microsol down so it helps the decal sit better.

I've never really had any problems with the GW decals.

Good job

Yes this works, but how do you keep the decals from flaking off? My decals just brush off from the slightest touch.

When you seal the model it should stop the flaking off if I remember right. I don't use decals though, so need verification.

Brush-on gloss varnish before your final matte sealant will prevent all peeling or chipping.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
