So, I'm flying out to play in the Adepticon team tournie at the end of March along with Centurian99, Janthkin, and Blackmoor. . .we are Dakka Team Datchment #1 (and the only, I think).

Anyway, I had most of the models already painted that I needed, except for an IG Salamander command vehicle (which I bought from Forgeworld) and an objective marker (we decided upon statues representing heroes from each of our regiments).

I also took the opportunity to go back and highlight the vehicles I had painted way back in the day when I didn't know or care what a highlight was (I also had to rip some of my vehicle upgrades off to fit into the 1,000 pt. limit I am stuck with).

I also needed to paint a Steel Legion Lascannon team, since (although I play commie Valhallans) I use Steel Legion guys as my "armored fist" squads normally (to differentiate them from my standard platoon dudes). However, I never used to take heavy weapons in my Armored Fist units back in 3rd edition (I used to use them as a surprise speed bump unit), and I've never got around to buying a heavy weapon for the unit. Well, now I have!

First up, the salamander command. After this tournie I'm gonna rip off the converted Heavy Bolter and put on the Autocannon to make it a Salamander Scout. I made the Bolter out of the resin Heavy Flamer that comes with the FW kit, and combined it with the Space Marine Scout Heavy Bolter from the old Advanced Space Crusade set. I can't say I'm 100% pleased with the result, but it gets the job done.

?he guy is so far back in the compartment because that's where he's gonna need to be when the Autocannon goes in eventually.

Also, the little yellow strip at the front of the Botler was painted on to give consistency with the rest of my vehicles (which have a  bit of a yellow barrel).

Next up is my objective marker. A statue of Chenkov:

Here's my Steel Legion Lascannon team:

And here's some before and after pics of my old Chimeras (without and with some highlighting):

And just for fun, here's my good 'ole Russ "Metallus Gravis" newly (sort of) highlighted (no before pics):

As always comments, criticisms, questions, etc are always welcome and appreciated.

I like the statue and the paint job on the Slamander and the Chimeras but that "glowing in the dark" Leman Russ looks silly. To quote the guy in the Salamander: "Hold back guys shot first when you see the yellow on their tanks."

I don't know latin, but does that tank say "heavy metal"?

This is a nice looking, cohesive force.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice improvement on the Chimerae - the highlighting does nice things for it.

The snow on the statue is great. I may need to find a pigeon to pose on Yarrick's statue. How'd you manage the "aged bronze" look? The green is subtle and exactly right.

Black undercoat.

50/50 Beaten Copper & Scorched Brown for the basecoat.

Wash with Ork Flesh Wash (green ink). Wash with Flesh Wash (brownish/orangeish ink).

That's it. Came out just how I was hoping it would.

Also, thanks for the positive comments guys.

I do believe that "Mettalus Gravis" means heavy metal, but I don't know for sure (I just thought it sounded cool--I'm kinda like one of those idiots who gets a tatoo of a Japanese character but has no idea what it means).

@Symbio Joe:  The Leman's barrel doesn't look so crazy in real life when it isn't 2 inches from the camera lens, but I know what you're saying.

However, part of the concept of my army is that they just keep on pushing with tanks and men until the job is done. They don't worry about silly things like casualties or camouflage. . .

I hope you don't bring that attitude to Adepticon. Casualties are to be avoided when possible, and cover is our friend.

It all looks good Yak. I really like the statue. I've always thought that some of the figures would make great statues and back ground orinmention, probabaly better than if they were painted flesh.

It's a toad. It came to visit me several nights in a row, while I was still in law school. Just hopped up to my screen door, and sat there.

Jayden - we have to bring 4 objective markers, so we settled on statues - Yarrick, Gaunt, Chenkov, and...somebody I don't remember.

Love the paint jobs. I really like how the tanks came out, especially the salamander. Did you do some converting on it? The statue really is quite nice as well, and a good use for Chenkov

Yak Attack! Sweet Guard there oh Elusive one. The only thing I'd change is to throw a very thin black or brown Future Floor Wash, just enought to pick out the details, get it a little darker in the cracks and otherwise leave the highlights alone. Even without, yer fellers look mighty fine, especially the Salamander.

Look for the foolios in the Dakka hoodies. Underneath I'll have my Sean Connery T-shirt on though, I promise.

@Syr: The only conversion on the Salamander was done on the Heavy Bolter (turning the resin heavy flamer into a heavy bolter).

@Nyraly: If you notice on the Salamander (the only tank I painted from the ground up in the last 8(?) years), I did have a base coat of shadow grey (the really dark blue grey) that I left in some of the cracks. Its just that back when I originally painted those Chimerae, I just sprayed 'em Grey with some hardware store grey, painted the rivets, painted the turret red and called it a day (essentially).

I've learend much since then in the way of the paintbrush. . .I defintately get what you're saying, in other words.

I have gotten alot of mileage out of my Space Crusade minis too! Kind of a bummer too, since I could probably sell the untouched game for a ton more if the minis were in the same condition. Anyways, are you playing Armoured Company or is this a forgeworld friendly tourney? Or maybe there is the option in the Armagedon codex. I'm just curious.

Yak, I'll be there. Do you know if they allow kibbitzing? I really have
no desire to play in a tournament for 40k with my Eldar at this point. I
don't have 10 Falcons to fly around.

Pretty much I registered to make sure I go and to attend painting seminars.

@Flatlander: I'm not telling you nothing. You be the enemy(well, potentially. . .)! J/k and yep: A Salamander Command to get around taking a mechanized CHQ (which is much more expensive).

@Malf: I've never been before so I'm not sure, but I'd imagine they have absolutely no problem with "kibbitzing" (as you say). Perhaps Flatlander or someone else involved with the tournie can let us know for sure?

Kibitzing by my definition would be HIGHLY frowned upon. In fact, you might be asked to leave. Our defintion of that is to "provide tactical, gaming or stratetic assistance to a game in which you are not a player." That is just rude and in bad form.

If, however, you mean just standing around and watching and generally BS'ing with the 280 players playing and you don't involve yourself in a game, that's very cool. Buy a badge though and get a free mini and maybe sign up for some seminars.

I will be trying the bronze statue technique. been looking for somethign like that for a while, now I just need some ork flesh wash.

Do not use the CLEAR dice!

Dear Whiny Space Marine Players,
you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.

suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman!

Yak - nice guard.  IG mechanized, eh.  There is going to be a wide range of IG.  One army that is coming has about 210 guys on average in each 2000 point force.  Now that's just crazy talk.

As far as kibitzing goes - it depends on who the players are.  Some players won't care that much.  Others will care.  I personally fall into the "will care" category.  The way that I would handle it is:  1)  For the first offense - kindly ask that you to not offer any input since you are not playing in the game.  2)  For the second offense - I'd kick you da' nutz.

Woops. Just looked it up. I didn't realize the word kibitzing meant
to often make comments on another's game. I just meant do they
mind spectators.

Perrysburg, OH

No big deal about the kibitzing.  At least now you know.

Oh and it is a great thing to have spectators.  GTs would limit spectators before.  However, it is a good way to allow more people to see the fun that these games have to offer.

Amongst the Stars, In the Night

I'm with Malf, I had always assumed that "kibitzing" was specating and shooting the breeze a bit with fellow gamers while personally not being involved/engaged in the game (in any manner). At least, that's how it was at the ole LFGS. I've also never played in a tourney, and the only time I've been to one was the Baltimore GT a couple years ago, where I showed up late in the day to grab some bits, see the armies and see the Mauleed & JTS rematch.

Thanks for the statue technique. I've noticed a similar effect while working on Necron sample.

Black prime
boltgun metal drybrush
Brown ink wash

(Gives its a nice aged feel)

Follow this up with more metal drybrushing and then a snot green wash, and things start getting interesting .

Not my own technique, by the way. And I like yours better.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'd recommend using some sort of metallic highlight after you've painted a statue as I described before.

I highlighted with a little bit of white (to represent frost/snow) to make the miniature 'pop' a bit, but if you're not basing in snow (as I guess most people won't) I think you'd want to substitute some other color for highlighting (like a bronze metallic paint) so the miniature won't look so flat.
