I've only been painting for a few weeks, I started on the basic space marine packs of 3, but bought a Command Squad to test my abilities. I'm just wanting to know how I'm getting on so far, and what improvements/techniques would people recommend me use to improve my painting

Thanks in advance!

Pretty good for newbie! I'm sure the pic lets them down a little but it looks like they could use some washing to shade the blue.

Thanks I've got myself a dreadnaught to paint, and the Shrine of Aquila scenery.

That's what I'm playing around with, shading, highlights etc they're all a little over my head at the minute haha

thats pretty sick dude try drybrushing a little tad of ice blue and then use an asuremen blue wash for that light blue in light areas and shadowed deep blue in creases

I love the terrain. Marines are really good for a beginner. Most new painters put the paint on too thick and lose lots of detail. You haven't done that here, so that is a great start. As mentioned, the next trick is to use shading and highligting to get some more depth. An easy trick for ultramarines is to paint the blue, then wash with Badab black, and then go back and paint the blue again but this time don't paint all the recesses. It is quick shading effect that looks quality.

Finally... an easy trick that will really make your models more complete, is to complete the bases. . Oh just noticed that it looks like the last picture you've already based your command squad? If so, disregard this suggestion and maybe just take another couple pictures of the completed command squad.

Whoa, much better than my first Ultramarines. Flocking the bases and washing them with Asurmen Blue will make them look better though. Your Scenery is really, really, really good too.

Guilliman and the Ultramarines are like Manchester United, everyone hates them because they are so awesome!

and thanks guys I'll try that on my next batch of Marines. Not sure what to get next... either scouts or a terminator squad, and see how I get on with them

Ultras are one of those armies that really can look good with a solidly painted army that's very clean and i got to say you nailed it. Keep on going and i can't wait to say more.

And bonus points for Jurassic park.

Haha thanks, I got it in the early 90's when it first came out, somehow managed to keep ahold of it till now!

I'm currently working on SM Dreadnought at the minute, then I've got a Shrine of Aquila, and a SM Drop Pod. I'll post pics when during/after they're finished

Looks better than my first army. I'm really in agreement about the washes though. Use a wash and maybe some light highlights. Other than that looks pretty good.

My advice would be to start watering your paints. You're new at this and it looks like you're good at it as well. Mix your paint so it's like milk and then paint with that mix. You can layer your model with that mix, by painting a smaller area so that it's darker on the outside. If you get what I mean by that, then everything else will come naturally.

Like the use of grass on the statue, it really adds a lot of character to it. (Aside: what's the Mario-looking stuff next to it?)

it's a magnetic scene, you know the original Mario games on the NES? it's the end of level Battle with Bowser haha got it off eBay years ago

And thanks I work in a store that has supplies for model making, comes in handy haha

@brotherbob, yeh I'll give that a try, on my early models I lost some detail because the paint was too thick
