What is the best way to strip a pewter model??? I have a Lord of Change that got prime with what looks like sand and black spray paint. Its unpaintable. As well what is the best stripper (no jokes please lol) for plastic models without melting them...?

Try using some nail polish remover and lots of scrubbing.

WARNING: it must be ACETONE FREE if you plan on using it on a plastic model or else it will melt it!

You can also try to dip them in Simple Green ® for a while and then scrub them.

I swear by this stuff. I just hit it on some plastic marines, and it stripped them down to GW factory gray and doesn't effect a single amount of detail. You might see some small part come unglued per 10 units you strip, but that's not a big deal.

Because of superclean, I buy minis on ebay all the time, strip them, and repaint them to my tastes.

It works on all models; plastic, metals, resin...

yes this is the magic stuff, i switched to this from Purple Power because the Walmart i went to was out of it at the time.

you can say goodbye to paint and primer with a good soak of a few days, even stuff thats got multiple layers of paint will come out paint free.

one nice thing about this stuff is that it really weakens CA/superglue to the point you can pull the pieces off the model, areas with large amount of glue will still be an issue but it really weakens the stuff which is great for fixing models.

i bought a few OOP metal Ravenwing speeders off ebay and dropped them right into my ultrasonic cleaner full of this stuff and in 4 days the models had fallen apart into their bitz and were 100% paint & primer free. all that was left was to flake off the glue and i have brand new OOP models.

The best thing that you can strip a metal model with is a paste called Zip Strip, it will completly strip a metal model of all paint in less then 5 minutes. Unfortunatly if you use it on a plastic model it will turn the platic into a puddle in the same amount of time. For plastic I use super clean.

There are some things slightly better than Super Clean but they are all way more expensive. SC is like 6 bucks a gallon... Here's how I do it...

Soak minis in undiluted super clean for about 24 hours.

Wearing gloves, and using a toothbrush brush down minis. This will remove about 75-95% of all paint, depending how thick the paint was. Place minis in solution of 75% water 25% Super Clean, for about 2-4 hours.

Wearing gloves do a final brush of the mini under running water. It's important to remove all of the super clean. Let minis soak in water for about an hour, then do another soak under running water. Then allow minis to dry. I do this in the utility room, and sit them on top of the dryer with the dryer running a load. This creates a very dry room and shakes the minis a bit to help dry.

Very important: Prime and inspect mini after prime to make sure no super clean made it this far. You'll notice a bubbling up of the primer if some did. If so, you'll want to use a q tip and wash that area off, and re prime, or if it's real bad, start all over for that mini. Usually if I'm doing a whole gaggle of minis I bought off ebay, I'll have one that this happens to and it's no bigger.

As for Glue... super glue will be unbonded. If you want to know why, ask a chemist! lol I had once bought some minis that were all glued by super glue and parts came off in my hand. This wasn't a show stopper but it slowed me down on that project, as I had to re glue. Plastic glue is not bothered by this stuff, but you might lose a small part, like a parchment seal, or what not. Again, this is no biggie at all. Your basing will also be destroyed into a weird pink goo... you'll have to re base, so if you have a real awesome basing job, you'll have to say good bye.

One final note; wear gloves. if not the degreaser will degrease your hands of all healthy natural oils. This will dry out your hands and cause your skin to dry out painfully cracking etc. If you get some on your hands, wash off with just water, and lotion up your hands 3-4 times a day to prevent this.

Just a note, acetone Free nail polish remover will also melt plastic, it just takes a couple minutes of exposure before things start going soft.

Super Clean will turn green stuff into mush, as I have discovered while stripping my old minis. (Luckily my GS sculpting skills of that era were even more terrible than my currently bad GS sculpting skills and I'm happy for that evidence to be destroyed in a chemical bath.)

Not to hijack, but when using Super Clean on plastics I have primed with a black primer, I can't seem to get them back to their original grey plastic color even if all the visible paint is removed. Dakka's article suggests that the black primer leaves a stain in the model, which is possible because the metal models I primed in black have a different sheen after stripping than the metal models I primed in white or grey.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I'd like to get everything off if I can.

actually its the superclean that makes the metal models a dull gray color. i had a mix of painted metal models and some metal models that did not have paint on them in my cleaner and they both come out a dull gray color.

i find that the GW white primer is more of a pain to get off the model where as the GW black , green and red just stained the plastic. im not sure why you would want to attempt to remove the staining if you are just going to clean the model up and reprime and paint it.

i will mention that prolonged exposure to superclean will soften up thin sections of FW resin. now this could just be my case in particular because i had said FW resin in purple power for 4 months straight to remove an obscene amount of mold release. a few days in the superclean and they are mold release free. i still need to find a good method for removing FW release agent consistantly.

Dude, stop being such an ass, and be more polite next time.

You could have just pointed him in the right direction without all the whining, moaning and rudeness.

Besides, if it is becoming too excessive the mods will have posted and locked this thread.

And this works on plastic minis too? I have a leman russ and a basalisk that look like they've been dipped in house paint and cheese.

Take your own advice. I pointed him in the right direction for the search feature and his reply? "I don't care." Which is basically saying, "I'm too lazy to be considerate to other posters and just be resourceful and look for myself." Somehow, though, he deserves the utmost respect and consideration because...? You say so? Likewise, if the actual mods (of which group you are not) had felt that my post was out of line enough, they would've edited and asked me to be more polite. Chances are, they are as sick of seeing these posts as many others of us are.

Sure, I don't have to read the posts, but why not take the opportunity to help somebody learn about the search feature and being self-reliant? It's a good life lesson that can be carried over to other aspects of daily functionality. Ever use a phone book, or do you just call 411? Ever just change your alternator on your car yourself instead of paying somebody $300? It's so easy. Not as easy as getting others to do your work for you, though. Ok, I was a little rough with the response. My apologies to the OP. Call it tough love. I am a 300' 'bad guy' monster.

My apologies too. Sometimes it can be difficult to express yourself on the internet as you would in real life. Yep, I'm sure we can get along fine in the future.
