So I got my first Finecast figure, the Imperial Guard Commissar, now i've got to a stage where i think it is worth sharing the fruits of my labour so far.
I'll chuck up a load of pic's that show the painting progress to date and a couple of the scenic base i'm making and try and do a little tutorial along the way. Lets see how this all works.

Okay i'll figure this editing out soon. I'll even read the tutorial but for now here's some pics of the base i'm making for him.
I started with a picture frame and made a rough mound of airdry clay in the shape i wanted the ground to be in. Next i stuck in an old bit of wood i found in my dads garden. I fabricated the roots from more clay and some milliput. Next i put basing sand on the ground areas with PVA glue then sprayed the whole thing with black GW undercoat.
When this had all dried i got a load of cheap artists acrylics and did the base coats, Green for the grass, brown for the mud and tree. Seemed a bit strange repainting a bit of wood in wood colour but it was necessary to mask the colour difference between the clay roots and real wood.
After that i brought all of the colours up the finished highlight stage and i've just added static grass (pics to follow shortly).

Commissar is looking good, and I love that gnarled tree-thing. That's a really great find. Can't wait to see how it looks with the static grass!

Cheers mate. I'm well happy with the tree. Think I may have gone a bit over the top with the grass but I'll let you be the judge soon.

Phew! I added some different shades of static grass by mixing two different coloured grasses and I don't think its come out too bad.
Just started painting the next model that's going to be part of the diorama yesterday. Once again pictures will follow after i've put more than the undercoat on.

Thank you so much. It took a while to make the roots as I used air dry clay which shrinks a lot as it drys so I ended up fixing it up with Milliput. Lesson learned there I guess ha ha. And it did seem strange paint a tree back to tree colour but I'm pretty happy with the results so far.

You appear to be very talented my friend! I really love that commissar! the face and the baby blue sash are done perfectly imo, and that scenic base appears to be coming along quite excellently, who else will be sharing it with him? can you give us a clue?

come on just a little one?.... :-)

I have a chaos marine that's just dying to be part of the action. I've never painted a chaos dude before so it's a bit of a learning curve for me but we'll see how it goes. Just started painting him today after a little remodelling so watch this space for my next update.
Also thank you for your kind words. It really inspires me to ignore the wife and get this badboy finished ha ha.

Lol, :-) do it! finish it, maybe a nice touch would be to make the scenic base you're making appear to be rotting and dying where the chaos marine walks over it? could look cool!

Wow thank you so much for your comments. It means a great deal to me and keeps me striving to create such pieces. My only regret is there's not more time in my day. Ha ha.

I have the same regret as you if only the days we dedicate to our hobbies were longer

As for your diorama I think the idea with the chaos marine killing everything it walks near is epic ! cant wait to see that done.

As I plan it more I can see the finish date disappear into the future more ha ha. The rot suggestion is more from Nerdfest than me but I can't wait to actualise his mind as well as my own. Thanks guys.

Okay quick update time.
As promised here are a few pics of the very early stages of the wee Chaos fellow i'm going to be integrating into the diorama. He's a Khorne chap and i've just finished the base colours and washes.
If you check the last picture you may get a clue as to the relationship between Tree, Chaos Marine and Commissar looking quite smug with his 'badself'!

You sir are an absolute gentleman. Thank you so much for your comment and taking the time to check out my workage.
If you can recommend any ways I can render my wife unconscious so I can work on it more I'd be eternally grateful!

Okay so i found a bit more spare time this afternoon and couldn't resist getting a bit more paint on this Chaos Marines head. I used a mix of Bleached bone and Snakebite leather to get the skin colour. I managed to get red iris' and black pupils and black lined the eyes. The teeth are Snakebite leather highlighted with bleached bone and tipped with a tiny touch of Blood red.
I'm pretty happy with him so far, i wasn't sure about using this plastic mini but i think i can get him to fit in if i paint him well enough. All good so far.
[Thumb - IMG_0718.JPG]
Bad shot but you get the idea. check the red iris, black pupil effect.

[Thumb - IMG_0721.JPG]
Came up to high on the highlights but you can see the blood on the teeth despite the rubbish camera.

[Thumb - IMG_0723.JPG]
Sorted the highlights out. in actual size he looks fine now.

[Thumb - IMG_0724.JPG]
tried to get a zoomed in shot. they look well clear on my phone so try zooming out and it should come clearer.

Definitely subscribed to this, looks very promising, also nice work on the commissar, I don't play guard but I still want to get one just so I can paint it, he is a good looking model.

Hey thanks Cosmic and thank you Jirc too. He is a great model to paint I highly recommend him. Should get a few more pics up tomorrow as I have a day off work and very little to do other than paint. Woop woop.

Here we go, I got a few minutes spare this morning while the good lady wife was doing yoga (imagine a Eric Prince video in slow motion) and managed to get the first shade of red done on the old Chaos fellow.
Used a mix of Scorched Earth and blood red for this first shade-up, must invest in a better camera soon!
[Thumb - IMG_0725.JPG]
I like this angle, it hides all the boring bits.

[Thumb - IMG_0726.JPG]
Hope you can see the subtle difference in shade.

So i found another hour spare after doing all my necessaries today so i splashed on another coat of red/brown mix to my Chaos dude.
Hope y'all like him so far.
