This past weekend was Wargamescon and I was really pumped abpout going, but I had no teammate for the team tourney. Tony Malave from the "Chicago Kamikazees" was kind enough to take pity on me and said we should team up. We thought that Fateweaver + a tough T wolf unit would be a potent combo since the rules for the tourney were each player could would bring a 1000 point list that was a legal force org. build (1 HQ 2 Troop minimum) but anything beyond that was up to you. Not only that if the power in the codex said "friendly" instead of a specific race, you could use it on your teammate.

Our lists
Tony

HQ
Priest (Chooser)
Jaws, Lightning

Thundewolf lord
(TH, SS, eternal, more goodies)

Thunderwolf lord
(Saga majesty, Wolf Claws, SS, goodies)

TROOPS

5 Grey Hunters
FLamer

5 Grey Hunters
Flamer

3 T wolves
(2 SS, 1 Pfist)

My list

HQ
Fateweaver

Herlad of Khorne
(Jugg, Might, rending)

TROOPS
7 Bloodletters

5 Horrors (bolt, changeling)

5 Plagues

ELITE

5 Crushers
(fully kitted)

Mission 1

Place 5 objective markers, THEN roll off for who goes first.

PRIMARY
Control More objectives

2NDRY
Table Quarters

Each of these objectives needed to be completed by having a troops unit from EACH of the lists.

Special rule, put a unit in reserve that cant come on the board till turn 4( for 2 bonus points.)
Opponents

List one
Blood Angels
Mephy

3 x las plas 5 man assault squad (meltas)

2x Rifflemans

List 2
Wolves

2 x runepriests, both with JAWS

2 wolf lords nearly identical to ours

2 rhinos os 8 grey hunters (melta/banner)

7 fenrisian wolves

Deployment

Table quarters.

We win roll of and we have them go first since its objective based, plus the shooting they have, shouldt do to much to a SS kitted T wolf squad.

The deploy behind a 3" level that we play that no cavalry may go up. There is some scattered area terrain on most the rest of the board except another piece cav. couldnt go up on our right, but at the "top" of our table quarter.

The rhinos have the two rune priests and the rhinos are placed between the 3" high terrain and the bastion. The dreads stand behind the terrain, with the Razors behind the rhinos. T wolves and Mephy are behind the terrain on react mode I guess. Fenrisian wolves go into the round 4 "penalty box" for 2 bonus points.

We deploy the wolves to the extreme left of our deployment zone in some area terrain. Rune priest hidden next to them out of LOS. Both troop units in reserve with one being in the "penalty box" for 2 points.

Our strategy, use the T wolves with Fateweaver , and the khorne units- crash into them with so much "pressure" they stay put - fighting it out, while our measly units met up on the objectives in the two "neutral" quarters.

Turn one they shoot everything at Tony, he takes a wound thanks to some decent saves. Rhinos advance a few inches forward to get into place to begin a Jaws-a-thon.

Bottom 1
I put the herald with the Bloodletters to help them survive. I want Fateweaver and the Crushers, and I get it. Fateweaver lands 9" or so from the wolves. Tony's hot saves mean cold movements barely making it 6" forward, but close enough to be in the "fatezone". Crushers land on the 3" high terrain, and their short legs keep them up there as I fail to "run" down the height of the terrain. Fateweaver wrecks a dred with shooting, Runepriest "stuns" one of the Rhinos. That couldnt have gone any better.

Top 2. Priest gets out so they can begin the Jaws-a-thon. Only two wolves are hit but they pass. This team is real cautious as they creep forward, and are just relying on fire power, setting up the wolf lords and Mephy for counter assault. Their shooting puts a wound on Fateweaver.

Bottom 2. Bloodletters and heralds come off the icon near the upper crushers. Crushers get down, barely (3") and creep forward 1 more inch running. Shooting stuns the rhino next to the wolf lords, and now his wolf lords are hemmed in temporarily, so our wolves could assault if need be. We creep forward though and make it just 6" more.

Top 3 They shoot all the laz/plas. razors and the dread and Fateweaver Botches two saves killing him. (I really hate that guy sometimes). Wolf lords that are hemmed behind the rhinos, take the "long way" around terrain towards the crushers on their flank near the center of the board. That was tough, without that big bird, we really couldnt go after that army.

Bottom 3. We figure to advance the crushers and letters towards that army to draw some heat and maybe lure away Mephy so the T wolves could chew up some grey hunters. We advance and AGAIN we cant get into charge range. Plagues drop in near a lonely objective. One of Tony's troop of grey hunters arrives and moves in line towards the plagues and that lonely objective.

Top 4 A wolf Lord and a Wolf go down to Jaws. Fenrisians come out of the penalty box, hit the Bloodletters, their wolf lords hit as well. The herald survives, but all the bloodletters are killed. I manage one wound to the lord and one dead fenrisian.

Bottom4. Their army is still in brace for impact mode. Tony and I cant afford another shooting phase here, but we have no target, so we barrel in and wreck the rhinos. Forcing both hunter sqauds out the rear. Crushers hit the herald/ wolf melee. Fenrisians are killed, a couple crushers go down. Horror and hunter units arrive and walk towards the closest lonely objective in the other neutral quarter. Plagues and other wolf unit are nearly to theirs.

Top 5. The murder our Thunder Cav. right in front of us. The shear amount of shooting along with some rough Jaws tests leaves one wolf lord to fight Mephy, but we dont even get to swing back. It was a major sacrifice to lode them, but at least their army stayed "contained" so so they ended their turn chooping up wolf lords instead of moving to contest objectives.

Bottom 5. Tony and I only have one play now and it is to play for a turn five game. We run up the horrors and hunters to take a quarter/objective. The plagues - hunters have another objective
but the quarter they are in has the crushers and wolf lords going at it. It is contested.

Their entire army is right at the center line, in their own deployment zone, and they have one objective. Their sheer firepower along with mephy will all but guarantee a massacre. I roll to see if the game will go on and ............."1"

That was extremely lucky. We were lucky to have figures left let alone win the game. We fell horrible for our opponents. I have been in their shoes and it is no fun. Essentially we were getting the crap kicked out of us and the game ends the only way possible for us to win. That was a great game.

Round 2 will be Deathwing/Tau.......

Game 2

Mission
Primary- Kill Points. The player on your team that scores the LEAST amount of kill points, is the kill points you use to determine which faction scored more.

2ndry- Have more units in enemy deployment zone

Bonus- have a unit within 6" of the center of the board.

DEPLOYMENT- Dawn of War

Opponents

List 1
Tau

Crisis Suit commander

Warriors in devilfish

Warriors in Devilfish

Hammerhead

Hammerhead

Large Kroot unit.

List 2

Dark Angels

Belial

3 Squads of TH/SS termies. Each squad has 1 Cyclone.

1 squad has Apothecary/banner.

We roll off, win, and have them go first. They deploy two units of termies towards the center of the board.

We deploy nothing.

They deepstrike the last termy squad on a flank but in the center of the board and the unit scatters towards us. Tau barrel on behind the termies with the Kroot out front.

Bottom 1. I roll for waves and get Fateweaver and the crushers. I land the crushers in their deployment zone, about 18" or so from the Tau vehicles. Fateweaver lands about 18" or so from the termies, in our deployment zone. The T wolves move onto the board to get into his "Fatezone". Runepriest and 5 grey hunters walk on and Jaws the squad of termies that scattered into our deployment zone, killing 1.

Top 2. His Tau move up-disembark-and fire everything at the crushers. When the smoke cleared, 1 crusher dead, and the rest were all wounded, but alive. Wolves shrugged off some missiles from the termies.

Bottom 2. Crushers crash into not only the Kroot, but just catch a fire warrior squad, wiping out both squads. Rune Priest Jaws' two more termies. Fateweaver and the T wolves creep forward threatening the Termies in the middle. Bloodletters and Herald arrive and land near the Crushers for some more pressure. Plagues arrive as well but are dropped in our deployment zone since they had no real "job" at the moment besides not get killed.

Top 3. Tau fire all guns at crushers, killing the rest except for one lone crusher who went to ground. The remaining guns opened up on the blood letters, killing 4 or so.

Bottom 3. Fateweaver lands near a termy squad in the middle, boons, breathes, and bolts killing 3 termies. The T wolves crash into a devil fish wrecking it.

Top 4. Belials squad charges the Wolves, but with Fateweaver nearby, they do almost no damage, and take 4 termies as casualties in return. Shooting from the hammerheads kills the last crusher.

Bottom 4. Horrors arrive and the bolt wrecks a hammerhead. The bloodletters and herald charge another wrecking it. The T wolf unit wipes out the rest of the two squads of termies locked with us in combat. Belial lives, but it looks grim for them now. Jaws, kills another termy. My teammate and I each have 3 KP, and the Dark Angel has 0. Our units are nearly all in their deployment zone, and their units are dropping off rapidly.

Top 5. Belial is killed, my bloodletters are killed. They charge our wounded Herald of Khorne with their Tau HQ out of desperation, but the Tau commander is killed.

They conceed.

All in all everything went according to plan. Fateweaver worked awesome with those T wolves and he actualy stuck around to watch the battle (unlike last game). Our opponents were really good sports and made a few mistakes getting too aggressive in their shooting phase, but knew the rules and were their to have a good time.

We scored 17/17 and were in a tie for fourth going into the last round.

Now this round would not go according to plan at all. Our opponents- Eldar/Dark Eldar Table 3.

The final round of the tourney we found ourselves on table 3. A couple of the Team America folks on table 1, another Chicago Kamikazee team on table 2 against team Next level painting (One of the guys from this team was on the team that won the Adepticon team tourney), so we needed a max score to have any hope of winning this tourney.

Jwolf warned us our opponents had been practicing for this event so I was excited to see what our wolves and deamons would face.

Mission

Primary- Capture and control (objective in each deployment zone)

2ndry- Kill points

Bonus - kill their HQ with your HQ.

Deployment- Table Quarters

Opponents lists

List 1- Eldar

Avatar

Farseer

5 Dragons in a

Falcon

10 guardians with weapons platform

10 avengers

Wraithlord

List 2 Dark Eldar

Hemoculus -webway

Archon with husk blade and strength multiplier

15 wyches (agonizer, flails)

15 wyches (agonizer, nets)

Talos

Venom w/ 4 trueborn w/ blasters

We win roll off, gamble, and have them go first. We figured it would be best for that last dash on objectives, and the wolves would have to endure shooting until the "chicken" arrived.

They place their objective behind an AV14 bunker that they fill with guardians. Avengers in front in some area terrain. Falcon next to that. Venom in front of the falcon on the edge of their deployment zone with the webway. Avatar behind the vehicles along with the wraithlord. Talos and all 30 wyches sat in reserve. We deploy only the T wolves as one unit.

They jet the vehicles at us and unload everything into the wolves. After all the smoke clears, both lords are wounded, and one wolf goes down. Hmm. Webway is placed at the near center of the board.

Bottom 2 . I roll for waves and get 2ndry. Hmmmm, guess I was due. I drop the herald and bloodletters together between the board edge and the avengers to put some pressure on his troops and drawe fire from the wolves since Fateweaver didnt show. I scatter 10" off the board. After mishap, our opponents place the squad away from the battle near the opposite table edge in terrain. 3 bloodletters die from dangerous terrain. OK. With deamons you take your lumps.....and there is a lot of game left. On to the horrors. I figured drop in and lite up that venom so the wolves can kill whats inside. I drop and scatter 9" directly into the venom, mishaping, and destroying the horrors. Begrudginly I place the pile of pink plastic imediately back onto our display tray. Well Plaguebearers, its up to you. I figured the only "good" drop for them at this point was on our own objective marker. They stick.

Well so much for deamons putting pressure on their list. Tony and I discuss our strategy a little bit and we thought our best play was risk a dangerous terrain roll (needed 10") to multicharge the avatar, the venom, and the hemoculi that just dropped the webway. Tony made the charge- missed the venom, killed the hemoculi, and put 3 wounds on the Avatar. Well that was lucky. Tony and I risked that 30 wyches didnt come pouring out of that portal and ruin our game right there. We had such bad luck early in our turn we figured we were due for some "turnaround"

Top 2 They roll reserves and get..........the talos and nothing else

The talos goes right at our objective. The venom follows. The Talos is about 2 turns away. The wolves were locked with the Avatar so no shooting. In melee, the T wolves finish the Avatar off.

Bottom 2 Crushers arrive. No wolf units arrive. OK something to work with. At this point we wont have time to get a scoring unit to their objective, we have placed our bets on the T wolves getting to their objective and hoped they wouldnt "burn up" along the way. The Avatar had added another wound to the TH/SS lord putting him on the edge of death. Crushers landed in the center of the board next to the webway and the talos. I figured that would get their attention, and draw the heat from those poor Plague's. The herald/bloodletters moved a grand total of 3" towards our own objective. Tony takes his wolves and multi charges again putting the claw lord and regular wolf into the dire avengers, while the fist wolf and TH lord hit the Falcon. The avengers lose combat and are broken and rundown. The first wolf hits the Falcon.......pens it...........and rolls................ Hmm. Cant shoot. Well onto the lord. This probably means the Falcon will just jet away to our objective unscathed at this point. TH lord hits .........pens...........and rolls......... . Awesome!!! Explosion kills two fire dragons and the unit breaks!!!!! I cant believe our luck. They fall back 9" away from us, but we consolidate 6" to stay close. Well that was HUGE turn of events. We went from having our backs against the wall to winning the game.

Top 3 Well I was brought back to Earth when all 30 Wyches showed up. One squad marched on from the board edge with the Archon and hit our wolves. The other squad teamed up with the Talos to hit the Crushers. The venom moves back 12" and disembarks the balsters to really pepper up the crushers. After the fire, and the melee, I have 3 crushers left, 2 of them wounded, but still with their icon. Tony took the brunt of the other charge and since the firedragons failed to make it to their board edge, the melta guns wounded our other 2 regular wolves for good measure. After the melee, one wolf falls.

Bottom 3. Fateweaver and a squad of hunters with the priest arrive. The grey hunters try hitting the crusher/wych melee, but poor terrain rolls keep us out of the scuffle. Fateweaver lands off of the Crusher icon. He tries to spawn the agonizer, but fails, pens the venom, but it is flickerfielded, and shoots 3 of the trueborn dead, breaking the squad. With Fateweaver around my Crushers lose one model but take no further wounds. I have yet to kill a wych. Tony, on the other hand, kills 4 wyches, takes a wound on his claw lord and loses his P fist wolf. The Wyches break, and the T wolves run them down. Tony consolidates to make sure to be within 6" of the fleeing farseer and fire dragons.

Top 4. We hold our breath as the guardians fire on the wolf lords, but Tonies saves keep both lords alive. The venom books it for our objective but not flat out so they could get extra shots on the lords. The wyches and Talos do no wounds due to Fateweaver, but this turn I put 4 wounds on the wyches. The wyches break. I cant pursue due to being locked with the Talos.

Bottom 4. I want to keep these crushers alive, but Fateweaver has other work to do. He jumps near the wyches to breath and gaze to get the squad below half and his bolt drops the venom. Schwew....no flickerfield this time. I kill a good 7-8 wyches so they cant rally and go relieve the guardians in the bastion. Our T wolf lords charge into the bastion and the S10 TH blows the bastion up killing half the squad inside. The talos kills one crusher, but takes a wound in return.

Top 5. The guardians fail to kill the lords, sealing their fate. Talos and crusher stay locked.

Bottom 5 Wolf lords kill the guardians leaving the Talos with the crusher. They have no chance of reaching our objective and we call the game.

We get 16/17 We missed a bonus point for having my HQ kill one of theirs since Tony killed all 3 of theirs

Now all we can do is wait. We have only missed 3 points so if the other two tables are draws I think we might have it. Table one ends first and in a draw for primary. Great. Now the table next to us. The other Kamikazee team has some tough dice at the end and team Next level painting gets max score. Jeez.......my team lost to Kenny's team in the final round of Adepticon and now his team eeeecked out the overall win on us by 1 battle point. I told Kenny I hoped we would win on soft scores, but it wasnt going to happen since his minis look incredible.

We finished 2nd overall and I was really happy with that. Considering we wouldnt be anywhere near the front if the game hadnt ended turn 5 against the 19th legion team from round 1 so Ill take 2nd. Getting to play with Tony was a blast, we had never played together before and it was fun listening to him talk startegy. Tony is a very calm, collect, individual and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and it was hilarious to have him pull me aside and say things like "Ok. Lets move this unit here and just rape that unit to death." Or something along those lines of obsurdness. I would crack up every time.

Congratz to Team Next Level Painting and that Team tourney at Wargamescon is really fun. I recomend making the trip to Austin next year for folks on the fence. The entire con is a blast, beer was for sale just a few yards away, lots of great players, and I still had a 7 game tourny in front of me.....thanks to the folks who put it on, because that is a con I would be really bummed if I missed in the future.
