Ok, so having decided on a colour scheme I have started painting a few of my Space Wolves. Only one shot at the moment, a head I have just finished. So far I have only done helmets as I can't paint faces for sh*t but thanks to my good friend Nerdfest09 I have a new method that although I'm not entirely happy with (my skills, not Nerdfest09's method of course) is much better than my previous attempts. As I go on I will put more photos up, slowly as I have two kids and work full time, so not much time to paint. I'm going for table top quality for my force, with a bit more detail on my named characters and any marines I particularly like, i.e. my thunder wolf cav (when I get some) and my Long fangs. No list yet, as I haven't decided on a single list, will most likely just paint up a few of everything and then make a list to do certain tasks.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope that it will entertain you as much as painting them entertain me( highly unlikely I know)
Any way I digress, have a great day folks, cheers, James

what are you worried about (apart from crazy eyes!) lol that's looking good so far dude, remember you can re-ink the face to get back some shadows and touch up the highlights again after if it needs it, your armor looks good too you've got no reason to beat yourself up over that attempt! i'll have a crack at finding the method i learnt from and pm you :-) but i'd say you've pretty much got the hang of it just a couple more and you'll be bustin the faces out awesome! (Shhh remember the cheats way for eyes!)

@ Angel - Thanks dude, I appreciate the feedback! I will endeavor to finish that helm next, they are my favourite helms, I'm going to do one entire squad (minus the SL) wearing them!

@ Nerd - Ha ha ha, sorry dude, couldn't help it, your blog has really inspired me with my painting so I thought I would try to do the same for others, and also to motivate myself to finish stuff. And it is working so far, this is the longest stint I've painted for in a while! I tried your secret method but it just didn't work on this particular face, will see how it goes in the future though for sure, thanks again!

Also I was thinking I would post up my final draft of the armour colour scheme, for anyone who likes it in the future. No pictures of it as of yet, but I'm working on it, will have one up before I go to bed for sure.

1. Thinned black primer, I use Vallejo but any black will do.
2. Thinned Shadow Grey to the entire model.
3. Wash armour with Devlan Mud.
4. 50/50 mix of Shadow Grey to Space Wolves Grey, painted over all the armour, only leaving the Shadow Grey in the darkest recesses. This stage is done very carefully and slowly.
5. Re wash the recesses and anywhere you want particularly shaded with Devlan Mud.
6. Thick edge highlighting of 75/25 Space Wolves Grey to Shadow Grey.
7. Thin highlight of pure Space Wolves Grey to the points on the armour that would get the most light.

This is not my method entirely, I saw a tutorial for it on here and I will give thanks to the original poster when I can remember who it was, if anyone knows can they please let me know, as he/she needs praise, as I am really happy with this method after trying out countless others.

Ok so back to it folks, happy reading,

James

Ok just a quick update before bed.

This is my Plasma Cannon Marine, probably won't end up fielding him but I bought the bits of eBay just because I wanted to paint one up as I really like the model.
Very much WIP, his leg is the only part I have done the armour on, and only up to stage 5, so no final touch ups or weathering, that will all get done once all the armour is at the same level. Also is a photo of his Plasma Cannon. I like the look of the plasma section of the Cannon so painted it up pretty early. I'm quite happy with how it turned out but I'm think I might re-do it depending on how the rest of the model turns out as time goes on. I'll try to get him done tomorrow night so be sure to check back in!

Anyway, have a great night all, see you soon,

James

Loving the soft blue/grey of the armor mate!

Are you considering any highlighting on the plates at all, if so what colour choice are you going for?

Hi Knightly, thanks for the kind words! Yeah absolutely, I'm going to do a thick highlight of 75/25 Space Wolves Grey to Shadow Grey and then a thin highlight of pure Space Wolves Grey on some of the more prominent points. I'll try to get him finished tonight so you can have a proper look.

Ok, welcome all.

So as it would happen, Murphy didn't slap me in the face like he usually does, and my luck held for the night. My baby slept reasonably well while my wife was out and I managed to get some painting done.
I managed to get to a stage I am happy with. He is still not finished but definitely on the way.

I still haven't done a bit of the detailing, highlights on the armour or any of the free hand on the shoulder pad. The missing shoulder pad is going to be off for a while, until I cast a whole lot of shoulder pads that I like. As I still haven't made my mind up. Also the base needs doing. He has really bad mold lines between his legs but they can stay, just call it armour seams... I tried to get a glow effect on the metal piece on the cannon that hangs out over the plasma section, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

This is the standard I am going to try to keep them all at. It takes a while at my current skill level but at least I am happy with the result. There want be any more updates until Friday as it is my wife's birthday tomorrow so I will be doing the nice husband thing and pampering her for the avo. Definitely updates this weekend.

Any way enough of my banter, pics:

@ Knightly - Thanks mate, I'm finally happy with a colour scheme, so I can get into it now. I bought another couple of paints today so I can pre-mix up my 50/50 armour colour which will make it much faster to paint.

@ BattleBrother - Thanks dude. I really love the helms, I'm going to have to buy some more from bit sites, as I don't have as many as I want for my army!

@ San76 - That's great, thanks mate! Tell your friend that he can pm me or post here any questions he has. I have received so much help on here from people I am always happy to return the favour. And welcome to Dakka by the way, hope you have enjoyed it so far! What do you collect?

Now that I have ten model all at the same point I am going to split them up into two groups of five, and paint them all together, hopefully this will help me to get them done quicker. It has in the past with my FOW, so hopefully it will work here.

The close shots show how nice and smooth you have painted these guys! nice colour too, it looks like the space wolves grey but a touch more gritty if that makes sense? maybe it's the devlan mud? but whatever you do keep doing it, now get back to painting *cough cough* sick boy! ;-)

Oh and i'm starting on the wulfen head for you today whiile I wait for bits! :-)

Ok bed time. Just gonna chuck up some photos of my nights progress. Didn't get much done, had to get up to the baby three times... O well. Anyway, still got something done.

Five Grey Hunters, all with right arm on. Bolt gun is only primed black so don't expect much there. No highlights on the armour yet either. Heads, back packs and shoulder pads are all about 60% completed.

And here are the pics:

Ok so no updates as of yet. Very slack I know, but being back at work while still being sick has been BAD... Went to bed on Thursday, my first day back after 5 days off, at 7, same again on Friday night. Just too tired to even function properly, let alone paint. How ever after 12 hours sleep last night and a nice relaxing day ( plus a 500ml V in the fridge) I am ready to get back into it tonight!

Also, I thought I would chuck up a photo of my recent purchase, only a couple of hours old here lads! Sorry about the horrible shots, but I just wanted a sprue photo before I rip into them!

@ LDP - Thanks dude, I really wasn't too sure on the colour scheme, it has taken me so long to chose one I am happy with, I kept going back to dark greys but if you guys are happy with this I think I'll stick with it! Thanks again.
