I don't think there's anything furry about that. The first thing I thought when I looked at that guy was "'Ee's on fire!"

Try using clump foliage.
I've seen people use it for jetpacks and rocket trails very effectively.

Why not just cartoony style puffs of foliage, colored to fit?

To keep it from looking like fur use a dental pick to pull secion out of the putty, push them back, insert pick and pull. it makes them much less uniform and paints well.
