My 3rd completed Sodapop, Isabeau Durand. Painted with GW paints, varnished with Tamiya Matt. Base was made from a wine cork, GW slate and GW snow flock.

My only complaint is with the snow. I can't seem to get it to look, well like snow, white and fluffy. It seems to just look like a lump of PVA with white stuff in it. Any tips are welcome.

I had the same problem with basing my Khador Behemoth. I used the GW Snow Flock but it looked more sparkly/icy rather than snowy. I stopped using the flock and just rely on white paint.

Well, I agree it looks more like "melting" snow than "fresh" snow...

But the colours are vibrant, and I like it!!!

I like it.

I use baking soda for my snow for Wolves and Khador works ok but it comes off and is kinda messy.

I haven't actually painted any Soda Pop Minis yet was tempted to get one of the relic knights for a throne of judgement conversion but haven't got around to it.

All in all, very nice. There's something about the angle of her pupils that is a little disquieting, though. Have you considered trying flour for the snow? It's a bit crumbly, but a couple of good layers of matt varnish should hold it on and give it a nice melted top layer look. I've never tested this theory though, so proceed with caution if you do.

GW snow is crap. It's basically white static grass, so it will never lay like flakes. Look into products from real model scenics manufacturers (Woodland Scenics is the biggest game in town, but there are others that cater to modelers - hell, craft stores sell a "snow paste" for making kitschy winter decorations that looks better), or try experimenting with baking soda. It can make for some rather convincing snow, and the effect it gives varies, depending on the method of application (sprinkled over CA glue gives a flat dusting, mixed with PVA it becomes a paste that dries like wet snow, etc.).

Honestly, you've done a fantastic job with the snow, considering the limitations of the material. No sense handicapping yourself in the future, though.

Oh, and nice painting.

using baking soda will look ok at first but it will eventually turn brown (like it does when you put it in your fridge to keep it smelling ok). My space wolf bases needed to be re-done after 1 year because of that. Also, the paste doesn't stick to the base very well and will come off the base after some time. Although it still looks better and more realistic. I think a way to fix it going forward would be to put white paint in the baking soda to prevent it from turning brown.

I use the baking soda technique and I have found a drop of blue paint or blue ink mixed in when you mix the paste/goop really keeps it looking like snow. It may look light blue in your container before you apply it but it really dose turn out nice and white unless you added way too much paint.

Didn't realise this would start a debate on Snow flock techniques! The GW snow flock just doesn't work.

Just assembled the next Sodapop, Suicide Queen!
