I recently started my 2nd army when I picked up some GK models as tournament prize support. Long story short, I decided to paint them similar to police/swat. The army concept is a force permanently assigned to police a troubled hive city that is too valuable to just annihilate via exterminatus. So they patrol the hive city for heretics and small daemonic incursions. They need to be highly mobile (OMG call 911!) and versatile to handle all threats.

Anyways, here are my test models and first ventures away from my Nids. It's my first time doing power armor and whites, so I know there's room for improvement. I've been using a wet palette technique, but I'm still learning. I haven't decided on bases yet, but I'm thinking urban rubble. I just want enough contrast so that the colors of the models don't match the base too closely. Any input on basing ideas is appreciated!

Librarian

Terminator Justicar

Strike Knights

All the marines are painted black and white to resemble police with blue eyes and red lights on their foreheads to resemble flashers. They have metallic arms and legs to keep some GK appearance. Swords are shaded from black to red to yellow and white to look different from the codex NFW's.

Death Cult Assassin

My henchmen will be the SWAT team whereas the marines are police. I hope to convert cadians to all the appropriate henchmen types to create a look of unity within the unit. Their power weapons will be shaded in blues to contrast with the marine's reds.

I like the models, but the fluff doesn't make a lot of sense.

I like it. I find when painting whites I do maybe 4 or 5 coats of highly watered down white. It is really slow process but it turns out a consistently good result. Looking nice though. Keep it up.

Yeah that's what I've been doing. My first set of models I had primed black as I anticipated more metallics on the models. The more white I added, the more I liked them. My next set of models will be primed white which should make those portions easier.

Gotcha. That should help heaps I would imagine. Personally I like the fluff. You should go for it. If you don't really like the fluff but paint it anyway to be more "realistic" to the 40k universe I find that it can make it hard to keep with. If you enjoy it and like the fluff, then just do it I say.

Cool, thanks for the link. I'm not up on all the different organizations of the imperium as I've been working on the hive fleet for my whole 40k career. Maybe I can model a squad as Arbites.

You see that one guy in the shady glasses, driving the shady van? I'm across the street from him.

Excellent painting. The color scheme is unique, I don't recall seeing Grey Knights painted outside of the typical scheme before.

This week I'm finishing up my ISWAT storm raven designed as a blending of police cruiser and SWAT truck.

I also repainted the force weapons on my knights to be brighter and added some OSL glow on their armor from the weapons.

Storm Raven looks outstanding. The highlights and the drybrush make the ship look almost real.

Really good looking. The storm raven is amazing. My only criticism is that the IG sergeant head is notoriously large and silly looking, you might want to look into 3rd party heads for further death cultist conversions.

I adore your painting. The strong, warm white coupled with the dark metallic/black is striking and VERY well executed. However, it absolutely MURDERS me that you don't drill your barrels or base these models. Those two things will literally make your models look 10 times better, impressive considering how good they look!

I love those effects on that storm raven! I have to admit after months of seeing beautiful ravens, I think i like them a bit more than I did before

Sorry to let you down man. Maybe some day I will drill the barrels.

I'm still deciding on the bases but don't worry, they'll get done soon enough. There's actually a cool Kill Team tournament coming up that's requiring finished models and I really want these guys to be ready. My main concern is finding an urban rubble color scheme that meshes well with the blacks, whites, and greys without the model getting lost. Still open to suggestions!
