Considering what I've seen, you need proper paints.

On topic, I use GW washes and Foundations, all other paints are Vallejo Game or Model Color, with the odd Reaper paint here and there( Pro Series Dragon Gold is epic win for doing weathered gold or brass).

I use vallejo now. However, If I need to paint bulk, I'll use craft acrylic tubes like apple barrel whatever.

I find that Apple Barrel black with a little matte medium added and thinned down gets the best bang for the buck as far as black goes. And considering I airbrush everything these days, a cheap black paint is spot on.

What do you use for an airbrush thinner for those paints? I've had really bad results with them. Windex didn't work.

You see that one guy in the shady glasses, driving the shady van? I'm across the street from him.

I don't find Games Workshop's paints to be a ripoff at all. They are a tad expensive, but they perform well. And mate, you NEED to get better paints. The stuff you linked to in the picture is garbage even as far as that genre of cheap paint goes.

For starters I thin every new paint I buy with 10:1 water: flo aid medium. I thin most paints almost to the point of milk.

So most of the time I don't need any thinner in the airbrush as my paints are already plenty thin. For thick paints(leftover from older days mostly) I use regular windex about 1.5:1 with paint. It takes a little trial and error to get it right.

Here is something that was pointed out to me, and is definately something to consider:

Paints will sometimes fade.
Models are something you could keep forever.

If you're just slapping some paint on models you're using for a "right now" hobby, any paint will work I suppose.

But if you're putting serious effort into making the models look nice, the colorfastness of the paint is definitely something to consider. GW paints do this very well. I have models I painted in 2003 that still look the same. I've also got models I used "value pack" paint on. These are sad, sad models in comparison.

I started out using P3 paints. Then I bought some Vallejo Model Colors. I've got a couple of GW paints. I've recently tried some Reaper Master paints. So far I like the performance of each.

I started with GW paints, but switched over to Vallejo - you get more paint per bottle and they even run cheaper than the GW ones. Also, Vallejo had great additives like thinners, drying retarders and matte mediums you can use to get the most use out of your paints.

As always, enjoy and have fun!

If you are in the UK and looking for a couple of cheap GW paints, try Hobbycraft.

They have a few in their sale atm. Picked up a couple I didnt have for £1 a pot (compared to the usual £2.30)

Personally I have a mix of Vallejo and GW paints.

I basically use a bit of everything.
GW, Vallejo, P3, in addition to Pebeo Deco craft paints (rather good, and not expensive), Golden paints (Very good for layering, but expensive), Liquitex and basic craft paints for bases and such.

If you need cheap (but still acceptable) paint, go for Pebeo. You get about about 4 times more paint for less than one pot of GW

No love for ModelMaster/Testors I see. I also use Citadel (dear god, they need better bottles) just because I hate mixing and matching paint colors.

That's for brushing btw.
