As the title states I need advise on painting purple power weapons for my GK army. I am looking for colors and techniques. Also any tips, advise, videos or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just taking a shot in the dark here. A couple coats of Hormagaunt purple, then a few highlited layers of Liche Purple?

What I did was paint the weapon a solid Enchanted Blue, and washed it with Leviathan Purple. I don't have any pictures (sorry), but it has that blue-purple thing that's pretty cool.

Try it on a test model or sprue, and see how it works for ya. Super easy, super quick, with table-top quality results (imo).

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

I've been paining some purple glowing parts on my warmachine models for a while now. I think with power swords like that, you need to decide what will be the bright spots and dark spots before you begin. Will you do a lightning patter on a dark blade? Will you have bright edges growing darker at the center, will you have the glow emanating near the handle and darkening around the edges? I've also found there are a few different ways you can go with the tone of the glow. You'll notice in all three examples I use purple ink as my shade. Aside from me just loving inks, they offer very intense colors that bring glowing parts a lot of energy.

This model has a very cool shade, enhancing the electric feel of the coils. I used only white and purple ink here. I inked a white base and built up with a mix of the two that was mostly white, and finally pure white.

This model has a much warmer tone where I used a slightly desaturated purple close to magenta (vmc purple -yes, just 'purple') that was shaded with the purple ink above and hilighted to almost white. It makes the lightning have an almost hot feel. If you don't want this soft slightly pinkish look, you need a very vivid and bold purple.

This third model shows a more medium tone, which I use on the majority of my models, I use a heavy wash of p3 beaten purple over a white base, then a lighter wash of purple ink. I bought the white back mixing in a little beaten purple inow white then a final light glaze of pure white on the coils.

@ Dais:
Dude, you rock. Thanks for the post with so many pictures. I've wanted to figure that kind of shading out for awhile now.
Very informative.

This is my technique. Basecoat your PW with a 50/50 mix of chaos black and liche purple, before washing it with leviathan purple. Then paint some blotches down the centre of the weapon with pure lich purple, before applying another layer of wash. Add a tiny bit of white and paint some vague lightning but make it broad. Apply another layer opf wash. Add a little bit more white, and paint the lightning a little thinner and closer to the centre of the outline. Repeat this layering until you have achieved a good lightning shape and the colour is almost white.

Started with a Liche Purple base coat and washed it black then waited for it to dry, once dry it got another coat of Liche Purple. A very small amount of white was added to the Liche purple and quite large lines were painted out to somewhat simulate lightning

More white was added to the mix (still small increments) and a thinner line was painted leaving the darker fatter line still showing

Even more white was added and thinner lines were painted in (the ultimate aim is to have very thin lines if white basically)

When the lines become to small to paint down I started to focus the lighter paint at junctions where lines meet

The aim now is to bring the paint at the junctions to a single point on the junction as white

and the final result hopefully should look better than this
