Edit: Corrected some information and added pictures.

(SCROLL DOWN TO BOTTOM OF POST TO SEE TL;DR VERSION OF OP)

I started playing miniature wargames in 2007 with the Star Wars Miniatures game. Around the same time I started playing Warmachine and Hordes. Around 2008 I added 40k to the miniatures games I would play. Since those times I've mostly played casually at an FLGS. I would particapte in leagues or campaigns as well as casual play in general. Every now and then there would be a small tournament...nothing big. Just a small unofficial event with a small group of participants.

This coming September I'm going to be stepping my game up a bit and will be attending an event in LA. It will be the first convention I'll be going to where I will be participating in the games played. More importantly there will be a 40k tournament that is a little more strict than the usual FLGS events I'm used to. Lists will be a little more scrutinized, painted armies are required (at least '3 color' standard), and round lengths will be held to specific times.

I originally wasn't going to attend mostly because my army isn't fully painted and I wanted it more than just to be 3 colors. But some folks pointed out to me that it'll just be as if I'm basecoating before doing any of the blending or shading. I could clean it up the paint jobs later.

In the next 3 weeks I will attempt to get not only my 40k army up to a 3 color standard (as well as based), but I will also be doing the same for a Warmachine army to play in an event a day prior to the 40k tournament. The next 3 weeks are going to be VERY busy. The 40k army is maybe 1/3 to being ready. I just have to apply paint to the portion of the army that is unpainted and then do the bases (This includes 3 Devilfish, a Hammerhead, a Sky Ray, 9 Stealth suits, 1 Commander suit, 3 marker drones, 36 Kroot, and 12 Kroothounds). On top of the 40k work, I still have to build as well as paint and base the Warmachine army (3 Warjacks, 10 infantry, 5 cavalry, 4 solos, and 1 Warcaster...actually 1 Jack, 1 solo, and the Warcaster are built and primed). The Warmachine army isn't even a definite list. I'm just bringing at least enough to make at most a 50pt list.

Aside from the modeling work, I'm going to have to brush up on the rules. I may have been playing 40k since the tail end of 4th edition but there is still is a lot I can learn or improve upon. Also I've only played my Tau army twice for the whole time I've had it (I used to play Space Marines...Ultramarines in fact). There are still a lot of things specific to the Tau that I need to learn and remember. Warmachine I'll have an even bigger problem. I've played at most maybe 4 games in Mk II. It isn't a large departure from Mk I but I'm still not used to it. Also I'll be playing Protectorate of Menoth. I used to be mainly a Khador player and only dabbled with Menoth a little bit. I never learned to play Menoth at the same level I play Khador plus a majority of this was during Mk I.

This thread will mostly just be my modeling work for the preparation for the con. For the next three weeks I'm going to have to get ready 2 armies while still working full-time and going out every once in a while (This old boy has started dating again... I'm not going to drop that just for 2 armies).

The first couple of days of this time will be construction of the Menoth army. Once I get to priming, I'll get started on painting the rest of my Tau. I predict that painting will take about a week and some change. After that I'll paint the Menoth Army. I think that will take about the same amount of time... a little over a week. With whatever time I have left I'm going to base everything. Basing will be easysauce. I plan to use just some gravel and/or sand. Maybe I'll throw in some static grass. Depends if I have time. ...oh yeah there's work and dating somewhere amidst all that...

TL;DR

I'm going to get 2 armies to 3 color tournament standard within the next 3 weeks.

Here are the Tau:

Here are the infantry left in my Tau army that need painting and basing.

Here are the vehicles I still have to paint. 3 Devilfish, a Sky Ray, and a Hammerhead.

Here are the Kroot that need painting and basing.

Here are some drones and Kroot hounds. The drones need their flying stands based and the hounds need both painting and basing.

These Firewarriors just need basing.

Here are 2 Crisis Suits I have painted. They need to be based.

Here is what I have painted so far in regards to vehicles. A Piranha and the weapons to a Sky Ray and Hammerhead.

Here are the Menoth:

Here is what I have built and primed. These were done prior to me attaining the Menoth stuff.

Bits for a Reclaimer

Bits for Vilmon

Bits to an Exemplar Errant

Bits to another Errant

Bits for an Exemplar Venger

Bits to a Castigator

Bits to the Avatar

Here I decided to plop these three on their bases since they were dry.

I did plenty of work this evening.

For the Menoth...

Last night I stuck the Errant bodies to their bases. This evening I finished their construction as well as 3 solos. I also got started with the construction of the Vengers. I at least put the horses together. Tomorrow I'll finish them up. For the Warjacks, I stuck at least one foot onto the base for each one.

For the Tau...

I based 36 Firewarriors, 20 Gun Drones, 2 Crisis Suits, and the vehicles' flying bases. I used GW 'Modeling Sand' (its more like gravel than sand). I basecoated 5 chassis with a layer of P3 Sanguine Base.

Pictures:

I started plopping the Errants on their bases.

Here is the base for the cavalry... its missing a slot for the model's tab.

Here's a picture of one of the cavalry model's tab. I fixed the bases so they would have a slot to go into.

Here is Vilmon built

Here is the Reclaimer Built

Here is Kell Bailoch built

Here is the leader for the Errants built.

Here is one finished Errant. I totally did not like trying to put on his shoulder pads.

Another finished Errant. This pose didn't make the shoulder pads any easier.

Here is a back shot of one of the finished Errants.

Once I got a couple figured out I went all 'mass production' on the rest.

Here are all 10 Errants built. Worst. Shoulder pads. Ever.

In between waiting for joins to dry, I got started on the cavalry

I based as much infantry as I could that was ready. 36 Firewarriors, 20 Gun Drones, and 2 Crisis Suits.

I also based the vehicle flying bases.

Here is one Devilfish getting ready for paint.

At first I was going to basecoat the chassis with this small brush... it just wasn't working out.

I used a GW Large Dry Brush as a tank brush.

Here is the Devilfish chassis with paint on it.

Here are all 5 of the chassis basecoated with a layer of P3 Sanguine Base.

I worked on the PoM today. I put together the Vengers. It wasn't as hard as the Errants. Everything fit pretty good save but one lance arm. I had intended to put together the Warjacks tomorrow but I was in a 'building mood' so I went ahead and started them. I managed to finished the Avatar and the Castigator is, I'd say, halfway done. Tomorrow I'll finish up the Castigator and then maybe I'll start some priming and do a little painting of some Tau stuff.

I dropped one of the Vengers and the only damage was a slightly bent lance.

I'm very pleased with today's work. I got the Castigator built and with a badass pose. It's like he's ramming his shoulder against something...like slam attack. I was able to get all my current Menoth (including the built Castigator) primed. It was maybe my best priming... practically no detail lost. I also got some work done on some Tau. I was able to get 9 stealthsuits, 1 commander, and 3 markerlight drones basecoated in two colors. All I have to do is pick out some details then base them and they'll be done (at least just for this project). Tomorrow I plan to apply a second color to the vehicles and then maybe some basecoat the Kroothounds.

I have more Menoth ordered. I sort of messed up on my list for the Menoth army and was a point over. So I did some modifications to my list and now need to buy more models. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for me to get work done on them. It's 7 models total; all infantry. Shouldn't be too hard to get done.

If you do succumb to temptation, get at least a Warjack, a solo, and a unit of infantry to experience their models. They're pretty fun to work on. The detail on them can be just right. Its intricate but not so much where you can't pick out details.

Worked on the Tau army today. Got some less then desirable results. Still got some stuff done though.

I sealed the Firewarriors, Gun Drones, Crisis Suits, flying stands, and vehicle bits. Some of it didn't turn out so great. I think I sprayed too much for some of the stuff. Some of the stuff now looks 'cloudy'. I was using GW Purity Seal.

I did some work on the Stealtsuits and Commander Suits to bring them to '3 color standard'. I started by giving the models a wash of Badab black. I think that was a mistake. I was expecting the wash to bring out some of the lines and details. It didn't look as great as I thought it would. It did kind of provide some shading but it isn't so even. There are some parts that seem to have more wash than others. I'm not sure if I was using it right. Maybe I was supposed to water it down a little? Maybe apply multiple coats of wash? It doesn't look too bad... just not what I was hoping for. After the wash I picked out some of the details like lights and sensors.

That kind of made up for the wash experience. I was able to replicate a lens effect that I had tried out on the Gun Drones and Crisis Suits. Once I got the details done I based them. They should be ready for tournament play now.

I also did some work on the vehicles. I applied the basecoat for the parts that would be red. It took me three... maybe four... coats of P3 Skorne Red mixed with water to get some good coverage. In retrospect, I wish I had taken the same effort for the P3 Sanguine Base coat. Hopefully when I get around to adding other layers it will cover up its crappiness.

Tomorrow I'll finish up the vehicles applying two more colors so as to have them ready for tournament play. I'll also get started on the Kroothounds. I might even have time to work on the Kroot. I'll have plenty of time tomorrow since I have the day off... at least from work, that is.

Did some work on the Tau army.

Didn't do much. Just added a couple basecoat colors to the vehicles... Vallejo Model Color Dark Grey and P3 Bastion Grey. The parts that were VMC Dark Grey weren't too bad. It was mostly hull parts. The P3 Bastion Grey was a chore though. It was for some of the mechanical/engine/weapon parts of the vehicles. Those weren't just smooth surfaces so it took a little longer to apply. This will bring the vehicles to the '3 color standard'. They are now ready for play. I'm going to move on next to the kroothounds. I'll see if I can get them done in one session.

Did some work on the Tau army.

Started on the Kroot hounds. Didn't get as much as I wanted done because I was doing other things.

I applied a coat of VMC Flat Flesh to the Kroot hounds' bodies. I then gave it a wash in P3 Brown Ink. I then picked out some of the details. The straps I painted with VMC Chocolate Brown and the parts to be metal as well as the 'spines' of the hounds I painted VMC Black. Next session, I'll paint some of the metal parts on the hounds and then maybe get started on the Kroot carnivores.

Did some work on the Tau army.

Did more work on the Kroot hounds. Painted the parts to be metal with P3 Bastion Grey. Painted some of the 'bone' parts with P3 Menoth White Base. I started on a set of Kroot Carnivore. I based the flesh VMC Light Green. I'm going to have to pick up the pace. Hopefully I'll get through the Kroot before the end of this week and then this weekend I can get started on painting the Menoth.

Did some work on the Tau army.

Finished up a unit of Kroot carnivores. Applied a P3 Green Ink to the Kroot for some shading. I then worked on the details. For straps and pouches I used VMC Chocolat Brown. For wrappings and some of the spine decorations I used P3 Menoth White Base. For the spines and nails/claws I used VMC Black. I also used it on the metal parts and thought I'd leave it like that. Turns out I have enough of P3 Bastion Grey to apply to those parts so I did that. Next session, I'll work on more Kroot. I only need 8 more for the one list I'm running at Strategicon.

Did some work on the Tau army and a bit on the Menoth army.

I redid my list for the Tau Army. I no longer need any Kroot. So pretty much my Tau army is ready for play. Some foam that I purchased came the other day so I decided to prepare those for parts of my Tau army. I'm no longer carrying anything in a cardboard box. Along with the Citadel case that I have I also have a Sabol Army Transport MK II. Aside from plucking foam I did some work on the bases. I applied some thinned PVA glue over the sand/gravel I had already put down. Hopefully that should keep the sand/gravel in place and will keep it from flaking off.

Along with the foam, I also purchased some stuff for the Menoth army: The MKII Deck, a Vassal Mechanic, and a full unit of Choir. I've cleaned the pieces for the miniatures and will put them together tomorrow. If possible I'll also get them primed. I'll see if I can't get started on painting the solos.

***My camera juice ran out and my iPhone camera isn't so hot so no pics this update. Sorry!***

Did plenty of work on the Menoth stuff today.

I was able to put together the Vassal Mechanic and choir. Once the glue dried and they were built

I started priming them. The Vassal Mechanic was primed black and the Choir was primed light gray.

In between coats of primer, I started painting the Warcaster, a three solos, two Warjacks. I use P3 Sanguine Base, P3 Skorne Red, and VMC Natural Steel. Only a portion of them got to get the steel color. I'll do more tomorrow. This will include a gold looking metallic. I've got a couple colors in the P3 line I could use or maybe one of the VMC.

Worked on the Menoth army.

I finished up 2 warjacks, 3 solos, and the Warcaster. I finished applying VMC Natural steel to the models. Next I applied some VMC Brass. Those two colors were the majority of the painting today. The three remaining colors that I used covered less area. I applied VMC Chocolat Brown to the handles, gloves, and other leather parts. I then applied VMC Deep Sky Blue to the Avatar's sword, his eyes, and Kreoss' eyes. Finally I applied P3 Khardic Flesh to the flesh parts. I'm pretty satisfied with how they turned out. I also pulled some foam for the army. I managed to fit all the models into two 2.5" trays. They take up about half of a Sabol Army Transport MKII bag. I'm going to see if I can carry my tools and paints in the same bag.

I'm worried I won't have all of my Menoth painted for Strategicon. The truth is I'm not even sure if that will be a problem. The event I'm bringing them for isn't an official tournament or anything so it might not require painted armies. I'd still rather play with painted models for the event. I have 3 more days to work on the models. I have 2 solos, a 10 man unit of Errants, a 5 man unit of Vengers, and a 6 man unit of Choir. I'll have to figure out tomorrow what I want to give priority. 1 of the solos isn't too important. Its the Vassal Mechanic and he was mostly an alternative point filler. I at least know he has low priority. The Vengers would be cool. I've always wanted to field cavalry models. The other solo is Kell Bailoch who is pretty good at ranged attacks which I'm lacking with what I have painted right now. The Choir would add great support for my Warjacks and from what I gather they're almost like an auto-include for Menoth armies. Finally there is the Errants. They have ranged and melee. I might want to go for them due to the lack of ranged capability in my current painted forces. So the mechanic and the Vengers get the short straws; one is really not desirable or so important and the other is a bit expensive in is mostly 'neat' not 'necessary'. Kell I can probably fit in no problem... its one model to paint. I'll have to flip a coin for the Choir and the Errants; do I go for the jack support or the ranged and melee providers? Hmmmm.

More Menoth Work

I laid down the basecoat colors for the choir and for Kell Bailoch. I'm not liking how the Choir came out. They just seem 'off'. It could just be that I don't have any shading or highlighting applied. Kell, even for basecoat colors, looks good. I also based the models I had painted so far with some Games Workshop modeling sand. I have 32 points 'painted' and based. I'll most likely use these models at Strategicon. Maybe, by some miracle, I'll be able to get the last of the Menoth painted tomorrow and then I can bring all 60 Points worth of models.

I managed to finish the rest of my Menoth. It wasn't the best of paint jobs but I think it does the trick. I'll go back and clean them up sometime after Strategicon. I just wanted them to have some paint on them before playing.

Thanks! I ended up not using the Vengers nor my Tau army but it was still fun getting them 'painted' for play.
