Game Info

Well we only had about 8 hours to play this game so we didn't have time to do a proper video battle report. With that said I still managed to snap a lot of pictures. We played what we call a "big 40k" game. It's not quite apocalypse but very close. We don't allow any formations and avoid super heavies and flyers. It’s less gong show and there’s more room for strategy and team work.

We also limit what strategic assets are available because things like flank march just ruin the game. What we do incorporate from apocalypse is that there is no force org at all. Objectives are placed in the same way as with apoc with 2 in each deployment zone and 2 in no man's land. Only troops could capture but anything could contest.

We played on an 8x6, each deployment zone is 24 inches and no man's land is also 24 inches. 6 Turns total with the usual apocalypse style bidding to decide who goes first. In this case the imperials bid 10 minutes and the xenos bid 20 minutes.

As for assets, each side was allowed to choose 3 from a pre-determined list. The xenos side chose vital objective, recon and surgical raids. The imperials chose vital objective, recon and general staff.

Both sides were given an equal allotment of low cover (sandbags and low brick walls) and both sides took turns placing individual pieces anywhere on the board before objectives were placed.

We also agreed that objectives could not be placed at higher elevations and must remain on the ground.

I should have complete lists for both sides posted in a few days. The game was 6000pts per side.

Forces

The xenos side comprised of elder and orks and also a forgeworld elder flyer utilizing the voidraven bomber rules from the dark elder codex. Some of the ork units are from the kastoral novem book, mainly the warkopta and big trakks.

The imperial side used mainly imperial guard with a few space marine units, mainly an assault squad and two captains on bikes.

Terrain Info

We play ruins as solid, no melting through walls. Only doors or gaps can me moved through. All the solid buildings were impassable (you can’t melt though them) . All of the trees and plants were destructible as well as the sandbags and brick walls. The river was treated as dangerous.

Battle Report

Before the imperials first turn the xenos utilized their surgical raids strategic asset which ended up immobilizing a hydra and destroying a chimera and wrecking another.

Imperials Turn 1: Chimeras advanced and popped smoke. A leman russ on the canyon side immobilized a buggy. A leman russ exterminator fired on the big trakk in the canyon and shook it. The immobilized hydra near the bridge wrecked a buggy near the d-cannons. The manticore hit struck the falcon behind the silo and immobilized it.

Xenos Turn 1: The kans and the battlewagon advanced across the river. The striking scorpions moved out of the bushes and advanced down the alley towards a chimera. The vipers took up position on the rooftop. One of the viper’s turbo boosted on to the promethium silo. Deffkoptas turbo boosted in mass all across no man’s land. The big trakk fired its supa kannon on the leman russ demolisher but the round fell short of its target. Domokan lead the charge into the refinery followed closely by chazkull. A well placed d-cannon shot struck a demolisher and immobilized it.

Imperials Turn 2: 5 scout sentinels outflanked near the river. Their combined firepower destroyed the ork big trak with the supa kannon. The demolition vets in the chimera fired on the striking scorpions and killed 7 sending the rest fleeing. A well placed lascannon shot from a leman russ struck one of the vipers and stunned it. Pask’s vanquisher opened fire on the battlewagon and destroyed it, pinning the nobz and causing a single wound. Marbo appeared on top of communications building and threw his demo charge into the unsuspecting grots, killing one and destroying all 3 lobbas A single outflanking scout sentinel fired on the big track in the canyon and stunned it.

Xenos Turn 2: Fire dragons in a wave serpent arrived from reserve and destroyed 2 scout sentinels, the ensuing explosion killed 3 fire dragons. A deffkopta arriving from resrve destroyed a third a sentinel. 3 deffkoptas surrounded a chimera and wrecked it, the crew was unable to emergency disembark and were killed. The battlewagon continued its advance through no man’s land, followed by 2 kans. One of the vipers descened from the building in order to get a better shot on a chimera. A deffkopta assaulted a squad of veterans, killing 1 guardsmen. The falcon that was on top of the promethium silo tubo boosted down over the river to block the chimeras movement. The warkopta arrived from reserves and flew low behind the silos. Domokan continued his advance through the refinery complex, followed closely by ghazkull and a skorcha. A outflanked on the canyon side eventually assaulted the scout sentinel. Another war walker outflanked and assaulted the hydra, destroying one of its 2 autocannons and stunning it. A deffkopta assaulted the leman russ demolisher and wrecked it.

Imperials Turn 3: The valk and the vendetta both outflanked towards the river. A well placed lascannon from the leman russ wrecked the viper that was perched on top of the building near the river. Autocannon fire from the scout sentinels wrecked one of the kans. Two medusa’s drove on from the imperial board edge and fired their bastion breacher shells, wrecking the battlewagon and subsequently killing 2 meganobz. A hydra opened fire on the nobz in centerfield and killed 2 sending them fleeing. Pask opened fire on the warkopta and destroyed it. The manticore subsequently opened fire on the nob squad that was in the warkopta killing nobz. A chimera carrying harker’s veteran squad outflanked near the canyon. Two banewolvess and 3 chimeras drove into the canyon from the imperial’s board edge. Various other reserves arrived from the imperial edge.

Xenos Turn 3: Accurate fire from a deffkopta on the vendetta’s rear armor wrecked it, the kopta subsequently assaulted the command squad that disembarked. A war walker outflanked near the river and destroyed a scout sentinel. 3 jetbikes flew on from the xenos edge. The voidraven bomber arrived from the xenos edge and destroyed the valk. The immobilized buggy fired on harkers chimera and stunned it. Snikrot’s unti arrived from reserve near the canyon and assaulted the leman russ, immobilized it, stunned it and destroying the lascannon. Two deffkoptas turbo boosted deeper into the imperial’s deployment zone. Ghazkull continued his advance.

Imperials Turn 4: The remaining scout sentinel near the river assaulted the jetbikes killing one. Pask’s vanquisher immobilized the falcon. Harker’s squad disembarked from their chimera and destroyed the big trakk in the canyon. Snikrot’s unit destroyed the leman russ, causing several wounds to themselves in the process. The banewolfs in the canyon advanced on the deffkoptas and killed both of them.

Xenos Turn 4: The voidraven fired on pask’s leman russ destroying the vanquisher canon. Both ork trucks pushed deeper into no man’s land. The skorcha fired on the guardsmen on the spaceport killing one. The waveserpent carrying the fire dragons turbo boosted into the ruin, failing is dangerous check and crashed, killing all occupants. The warboss on bike split off from snikrot’s unit and drove across the central canyon bridge. The warboss and snikrot descended into the canyon and assaulted two of the chimeras but caused no damage. Ghazkull assaulted a hydra and wrecked it. A deffkopta fired on a hydra and wrecked it. The jetbikes lost combat with the sentinel and fled off the board.

Imperials Turn 5: The last remaining sentinel near the river assaulted the war walker. One of the veteran squads in the canyon disembarked their chimera and fired on the battlewagon, wrecking it. A torrent of fire from the chimeras killed the warboss and what was left of snikrot’s unit.

Xenos Turn 5: The voidraven flew above the promethium silo. The remaining waveserpent used its star engines and flew deep into the imperial deployment zone. The boyz squad under the bridge assaulted the vet squad, wiping them out.

Imperials Turn 6: Autocannon fire destroyed an ork trukk in the refinery complex. The assault squad assaulted the skorcha, destroying its skorcha and shaking it. The banewolves advance on the ork boyz and burninate them. The warwalker wrecked he scout sentinel in close combat.

Xenos Turn 6: The warboss and what remained of his unit advanced on the imperial deployment zone. Ghazkull advanced on the imperials objective and contested it.

The final score was 1 objective for the imperials and 5 objectives for the xenos. The xenos held their vital objective (the grots on ammo boxes) as well as 3 other objectives located near the promethium refinery.

If you enjoyed this battle report please exalt this post 

OUTSTANDING!!! Really shows off what 40K can really look like. Awesome stuff. Thanks for posting how Apoc games can really be.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Excellent photos and tremendous terrain (a fine looking board). The armies are both modelled and painted to a superb level. Great to see so many well painted models battling on custom terrain.

Thanks for posting - I know how long these take to do.

Any chance of getting the text interspersed with the photos to help keep track of the battle easier?

Between ramblings I let my camera shutter to thought some delicious images of battle. That's right the pics all suck! Thanks to Crab loaning me his flash for my cannon I was able to take some pics that turned out, most of them were just things that caught my eye where I could manage to squeeze into to take pics while everyone ran around between turns.

As always my Desert schemed Imperial Guard put up a fight; though time to time died horribly attempting to do so.

Anyway started by adjusting camera while taking snaps of these awesome lil things that I really enjoy the paint scheme on:

In reserves two Chimera mounted vet squads and a five man assault squad of Marine death.

Alley of death: Ork/Eldar square shoulders together, taking shelter from Imperial ordnance.

Pask and his Vanq stare down a Falcon with a Hydra for back up. Rounds clearly pinged off the shields and wounded the man on the objective marker landed in front of the falcon.

A few shots of squads using elevated vantage points to gain LoS and take shots at advanting Ork/Eldar.

Chimera suffers a tragic loss of forward capabilities as the machine spirits are there but no longer able to thrust its might forward. Eldar advance is stopped deadfast in its tracks as the Vet Squad with in opens up and peppers the squad into retreat.

Two autocannon wielding sentinels sit idly amongst reserves; one missing a pack that has been knocked off revealing the god awful paintjob that festers below as if it were an STD or PTD if you will from previous "lovers" (owner).

So the next few pictures turned out great but did not actually happen in game. A rule was realized and the arrival of this squad changed. It was believed that the IC could separate from the squad as it arrived but this is not the case. It still did look vicious to say the least.

Well Pask was happy to hear it was only a rumor that an Ork Warboss appeared behind him, as stated above this was the IC that meant to break from the squad on arrival.

Fellow Imperial Player discovers cure for male baldness, however further research is necessary to correct for colour.

My pretty bird falls from grace, but leaves a mark doin' it.

Wave Serpent CRASH AND BURN!

Yeah, you might want to check with your local realtor if your home is Serpent resistant.

The rest of the images are models that I had worked on specifically to have finished for the game. There's a bunch others not pictured but I didn't really have the time to put them all together for shots. Will have to snag Crabz flash one day and go through my army; but lots left to paint before that I suspect. The Catachan sergent with bolter and powerfist is one I plan to clean down to bare metal and start all over however; as I just don't like the result as it is.

I really enjoyed this game, it had been a long time since I'd managed to play an Apoc game; which I love because Apoc = tanks and tanks = awesome and awesome =... well fething awesome . I also enjoy these larger games as they often have that drive for the need to finish painting models to have them ready for the table. Two squads painted and several sergents and I used my Lord Commissar model as a commander which actually looked pretty damn cool on the table; well I thought so.
