So the Independent Characters (a very good 40k podcast) started a hobby challenge a few months ago - basically, the idea was to build an 1850 army list, a 400 point sideboard, and have it done by the Spring of 2011. You can read the rules here.

Here's the 1850 list I'm building to - it doesn't need to be a particularly good list, just one that's legally fieldable. Here is my tentative list, which can change up to 3 times:
Pedro Kantor: 175
Master of the Forge with Conversion Beamer: 120
Assault Terminator x9: 360
Sternguard x10, combi melta x2, power fist: 285
Rhino: 35
Tactical squad x10, melta, multimelta, power fist: 200
Rhino: 35
Tactical squad x10 plasma gun, plasma cannon, fist: 205
Rhino: 35
Dreadnought autocannon x2: 125
Drop Pod: 35
Attack bike x3, multimeltas: 150
Scout bike x3, melta bomb, teleport homer: 100

And my sideboard:
Honor Guard: 135
Chaplain with jump pack: 115
Razorback with twin linked lascannons: 75
Razorback with twin linked lascannons: 75

Here's my tentative schedule:
July: Rifleman Dreadnought
August: Sternguard Squad, Pedro Kantor
September: Tactical squad, Rhino
October: Tactical squad, Rhino
November: Drop Pod, Rhino
December: Attack bikes, Racorback
January: Master of the Forge, Assault Terminators
February: Land Raider
March: Razorback
April: Scout Bikers

I'm starting this thread a little late so you'll get to see a bunch of painted minis right from the start!

Here is my Dreadnought from July:

For August, I have my Sternguard squad and Pedro Kantor:

The big man himself:

Some detail:

And here's the tactical squad for September; they're actually nearing completion as I type this, but I'm going to put up a WIP now just for posterity:

Every Marine has GW Crimson Fist shoulderpads where applicable. I've got some cool surprises with the models coming up, which, if you know me, means there'll be plenty of RT era models coming up! Stay tuned!

Very nice.

I'm planning a 400pt Combat patrol force for a local club event and I'd picked out crimson fists so I'll use this as inspiration. I particularly like how you've gone very dark blue which really helps the red of the eyes and fists pop.

I'm not totally sure what you're asking here, since it sounds like you're answering your own question.

Ah! I get what you mean. There's a little nubbin on the top of the gun, as you can see here:

Thats' where his free hand is. I didn't want to reshape or resculpt his hand to be shut over it, because my sculpting skills are pretty lousy.

Ahh!

You sould probably sculpt a grip.
That would:
a. Make there something for the hand to be holding onto
b. easier to see so there is no more "WTF is he holding?" comments
c. Easy to sculpt

I assume I'll probably end up doing this conversion again, so at the very least I'll try something like that!

Two options for the model as it is:
Hack the hand at the wrist and move the hand facing rearwards in a vertical grip on that nubbin.

Place a small cut on the palm side even with the finger joints and gently squeeze it with needle nose pliers. Preferably the ones with round tips.
Since the model is already painted wither of these options makes touch up minimal.

So this wasn't exactly for the challenge, but I finished painting it and it's Crimson Fists-related, so I'm putting it here!
When digging through my Box O' Warhams (tm) when I was at my parents' house a few months ago, I found an incomplete landspeeder sprue, beat up and kinda broken. I took a saw to it, got an old CD and some rocks from the driveway, and put this together:

Defend our brothers!

The reason the basing doesn't match up is because my Crimson Fists are based for urban combat while that little piece of terrain is for my board, which is brown. Oh so very brown.

Thanks, glad you're liking the blue! It was important to get a good shade since it's kind of important to this army

I haven't painted anything new for these guys quite yet - I graduated last month, had to move, and have a full time job that's kind of taking up my time! I've finally gotten settled in at my new place but some Iron Warriors have been taking up my time - I've got an old school razorback on my desk that I'll have painted up before the month's out though!

I've got two vehicles to paint up before the month's out - yikes!

Moving, a funeral, and a full time job have made it really hard to paint this month, but you'll see paint on these tanks soon!

I love that speeder. The Marines in it are just chillin' and I imagine one of them is saying "at least the radio still works!"

This whole preoject is looking awesome. Keep it up. I can hear the orks running already!

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts forever.

Considering also your duty as a warrior you should not waver. Because there is nothing more auspicious for a warrior than a righteous war.

Thanks! The "standard" scheme is Boltgun Metal for the details, but I feel that's too low-contrast for my liking. I brightened it up from grey to white when I started the army, and I'm very happy with where it's taken my scheme.

Thanks Unfortunately, it doesn't so much look like two dead Marines in a wrecked speeder as much as it looks like two kind of bored Marines who forgot to bring the keg to their latest outing. It's fun terrain to fight over though!

You don't think that's a too dark blue for Ultramarines? Maybe I'm just old fashioned and think they should be Ultramarines Blue over white primer

No disrespect intended to the creator of the above image but it does show the poster paint Blue + Red gunz + Yellow rims that makes me shudder..

The top pic is from a recent BatRep (available here: Clicky !!) and is the best I have lying around to show the look I go for. I will do a Blog for them eventually...The Librairian is from my old original army.

I'm actually a huge fan of those bright blue, red, and yellow Ultras - the first 40k models I ever saw were Marines painted like that and they've always held a place in my heart as a result!
