Heya

(Not sure if this is the right place to post this thread but I´ll just go ahead and post it here)

Since I have gathered a couple of terminators by now and the few of them that I have already painted are done so in the colours of different chapters, I thought of simply continueing this tradition, because I really enjoy doing all the different colours and styles. My question to you now is that, if I was your opponent and presented to you an army of models, all from different chapters, sharing nothing but the same shoulder pad (only 1 will be the same for all) and the fact that they are all space marines, would you still play against me? I have yet to play a tournement but I thought if I already spend all that cash on an army I might aswell be able to play it. I´m in doubt about this, because I remember reading that for an army to count as fully painted, it must be painted coherently. I love the idea of an elite Terminator strike team assembled from a variety of chapters, but I´m not sure if players who did a themed army all in one colour scheme would be happy to play against my happy family.
I guess no matter what response I´ll get, I´ll continue to paint them as I like, but it would be nice to hear your oppinion on the matter!

peace (and eternal war)

I'm not sure as to whether it would be legal in a tournament. Check with a TO.

As for a friendly game, ensure you leave out the Terminator that's the same colour as my army, and I'll be fine.

cool idea, but you're right in checking whether it'll go down well.

Back in an old WD they talked about the concept of a 'crusade army.' It was a Marine army that had loads of units from different chapters, united in some kind of Imperial Crusade. Was an excuse to have units from all sorts of different chapters to paint. Not sure about different chapters in one squad, but this could be used to explain the various designs.

Thanks for the input guys! Contacting the To is probably the best spontanious solution.
As for fluff reasons, I imagined that a variety of chapters would all send one or two of their champions to form a rapid response
team with the power to help out smaller forces in a case of emergency. For instance, a force of a smaller chapter such as the
Black Panthers (chap of the terminator I`m painting right now) encounters some powerful chaos general they can´t beat alone.
The whole group of terminators teleports in, kills the general plus other key figures and gives further assistance until the needed
reinforcements arrive or the forces present can master the situation alone.

Right now I´m just facing the problem that I have all the chapter patterns only for the standard power armoured marines and not for the
TDA, so the units don´t look exactly like they´re PA friends. Chapters that are most likely going to be present in my force will be:
Black templars, Salamanders, Ultramarines, Bloodravens (not sure yet), Guardian Angels, Black Panthers, Carnosaurs, Bright Hosts, Head Hunters, Lions of Shadow
and more will probably come once I finished this wave.

Considering most people I play don't even have painted models, I think I can handle a "taste the rainbow" army! There's no reason they wouldn't be legal in a tournament as long as you let people know what Space Marine variant codex you're using.

I really love that "crusade army" idea htj mentioned, but your fluff is good too. I imagine it might bother some people if you didn't bother to give any explanation besides "I wanted to paint them that way." Really though, even that explanation should be enough---especially if you're playing them as Vanilla SM.

But yeah, in tournament settings, always ask the TO.

Your fluff is good and sound.

The tournament rules for army coherency keep in mind that not everyone will paint according to the Codex Astartes schemes. My Sternguard are Deathwatch, my first company is paitned in a completely different way from my 2nd company (not only the helmets) and it is all backed up by the fluff. Haven't had any problems with it so far, and neitehr should you.

I like to think that most people at Games Workshop don't care much about the fluff behind a fan's armies, just so long as the armies look cool and fit the rules. I've read White Dwarf articles about Chaos Orks and other such stuff that "doesn't fit the fluff", and It's been praised because it looks good.

Has any one read the ultramarine's books? In the third one the main charicters come across "Renegade Marines". No, not chaos space marines. In the book there space marines that have committed some crime and got kicked out of there chapter as a consequence (though for some reason there allowed to keep there armor....). Anyway, there searching for redemption which means they act like normal space marines (kill the heretic, Die xeno etc.).
Just an Idea.

The idea immediately made me think of the Deathwatch too, it's just them wearing their "home" uniform over their "visitor" uniform :p

I too would do them as Deathwatch. All black with a Chapter Color Shoulder Pad.

Rule of Cool. Always invoke.

Srsly though, not going strictly with fluff does not make the army illegal or frowned upon in any way. Going against the codex and FOC is a different story, as that will obviously impact gameplay.

if you base the entire army the same together with your shoulder pad link i would say a different spin on a death watch army. use the new grey knight codex and your golden. the death watch is a unit consisting of the best space marines from different chapters. they paint there armor black except one shoulder pad you can flip it and say they only paint one shoulder pad black with the insignia of the death watch.

hoped this helped

Heya! Sorry for the late response and thanks for all the answers, it´s nice to see that no one really opposes the idea
I like the deathwatch, but A. IFRC they don´t use TDA and B. no matter how cool their fluff may be, I find their looks a little dull.
I now pretty much finished one squad, which came out pretty well for my painting skills. Compared to other SM armies they look a little uncoherent, but facing any non SM or renegade army they should do fine. Once I finish the last bases I might post a little picture!

(Chapters present on finished termies: Black Templar, Black Panthers, Carnosaurs, Salamanders, Ursa Brothers. Next up should be an Ultramarine and a Blood Raven, though hobby time is fleeting and I´m lazy)

I actually think this is a great idea for a Renegade chapter of Marines from different chapters. Have you got any pics?

GW actually made an excuse for this to happen years ago. They called it a "Space Marine Crusade" Army. It wasn't every single guy mixed, but mixed squads of different chapters. The idea is that battlegroups of Marines, or whole chapters at a time will pick up and leave their chapter, possibly never comming back. They go out among the stars fighing the enemies of mankind lightyears from home. Along the way they collect other bands of space marines to take part in the "crusade". After years of fighting they start to mix together to replace casualities. Like a tactical squad with 6 guys from one chapter and 4 from another, led by a Captain from a third chapter etc. This way you can use whatever chapters you like and still have it be "official". It's such a cool idea I very nearly made my whole space marine army in that fashion, but it was always a reason to explain how marines from my army and the marines of my two brothers armies would have mixed squads. If anybody had a problem with you using mulit-chapter stuff you should get new friends to play with.

"Oh yeah ... You and what army?" ... "Me and my Zoats $#!&*! that's who!"

I love this idea, and was considering it myself, up until I fell in love with the blood ravens colour scheme. Only thing I'd say is if you're gonna use black templars, don't bring psykers etc to avoid anyone pointing holes in your fluff.

By the way your squad looks awesome!

Roll w/ it. In terms of fluff say they are part of a crusade army & that they are all the champions of their various squads (sgt, wolf guard etc) banded together for some mission of the utmost importance in which the most veteran of the veterans are needed.

Thanks again for all the replies and the feedback. I feel pretty reassured now that most people I might incounter will at least tolerate my army. Plus, all the fluff explenations you guys have given should suffice for most adversaries If I finish some other models I might upload another picture or two... if I finish more squads I might post a group picture, but I am fairly busy at the moment.

@Mechanised Space Corps, thanks for the compliment! Though you are right about the whole Psyker-BT conflict, I was actually considering running a libby in my list x( I figured that though the BT strongly dislike psykers, they´d just get their act together and accept it. Like in the Deathwatch, where the members have to lay chapter feuds behind and work together with all the others.
Plus, a little drama within the army to keep things interesting is always nice. Imagine my army as a sitcom, where the BT and the Libby always get into fights until the rest of the gang pulls them apart and the captain lectures them about growing the feth up

@ Fatty, thanks aswell for the compliment. Do you have any tipps on how I could produce rocks or randomn debrie? I was thinking of just adding some random barrels or chunks of wall to the bases, but A. that usually takes more precious time I could use painting my termi-lads and B. it doesn´t really go with the grass :S So yeah rocks might be a solution, I just don´t know how to make/paint them.

Maybe there's a challenge between a group of chapters to see which has the best terminators? The only way to truly know would be to go out and start a WAAAAAAGH!!!!
