Ok, I'm starting an Iron Warriors army that I'll be building up to Apocalypse level of about 5000 pts w/ lots of big guns to come in time. For now, though, the primary focus is the legal army for regular & tournament play.
To begin w/ are pics of the 2500 pts army which is my end of November painting/building goal.
Here's the whole 2500 pts, mostly unpainted:
First row left to right:
Daemon Prince, Iron Warsmith w/ bodyguard, raptors (awaiting jump packs after painting), Chosen
Second row left to right:
AC/ Plas/ PF chaos marines w/ rhino, AC/ Plas/ PF chaos marines w/ rhino, Noise marines w/ rhino, berzerkers w/ rhino
Third row left to right:
Vindicator Alpha, Obliterator trio, Vindicator Omega
Army list:
HQ
Daemon Prince (daemon bound into special built dreadnought frame) - wings/flight
Chaos Lord (Warsmith) - terminator armor, daemon weapon
Elites
Chosen (infiltrators to disable enemy defenses) - x5, 2 plasma guns, missile launcher, icon of nurgle
Terminators (bodyguard to warsmith) - x3, pair of lightning claws, combi-melta, chainfist
Troops
Chaos Marines - x10, plasma gun, autocannon, champion w/ power fist
- in rhino - havoc missile launcher
Chaos Marines - x10, plasma gun, autocannon, champion w/ power fist
- in rhino - havoc missile launcher
Noise Marines (active-denial squad) - x5, x4 sonic blasters, blastmaster, champion w/ power weapon
- in rhino - havoc missile launcher
Berzerkers (Death's head breaching squad) - x10, skull champion w/ power fist (chainfist), personal icon
- in rhino - combi-melta
Fast Attack
Raptors (rapid response tank hunters) - x5, x2 meltaguns, champion w/ power fist, icon of chaos glory
Heavy Support
Obliterator Cult - x3 Oblits
Vindicator Alpha - daemonic possession
Vindicator Omega - daemonic possession
I'll be posting pics as I paint each unit. I'll probably start w/ an unpainted pic of each unit w/ their respective transport where applicable & then a PiP & completed series. This is the first time I've ever really attemped to document an army's progress from the ground up & hope this will help me stay motivated to complete it in time. Only downside is awaiting the weather to warm up a bit so I can spray paint !

Ok, thought I'd show some pics of individual units assembled, but not painted (some still need some mold/flash cleanup)
First is my custom vindicators
These vindicators have served w/ Iron Warsmith Mako's warband for over 2 centuries & have seen many repairs & upgrades over the years. During the siege of Tarsus Secundus the defenders capital fortress was on an island with defense batteries powerful enough to prevent any orbital landing on the island itself. This led to Mako ordering renegade chimeras seized & the vindicators all retro-fitted for amphibious warfare. The demolisher cannons retract into the hull & the gun port is sealed up, using the cannibalized chimera components the siege tanks were able to traverse the water & assault the walls of the fortress from its own beaches, shattering the walls. After 3 days of this Mako was able to dispatch 3 brigades of Death's Head breaching squads using landing craft under cover fire of artillery batteries to crash through the breached walls & rend asunder the defenders manning the defense lasers opening the fortress island to orbital landing.
The afore-mentioned Death's Head breaching squad (Berzerkers)
Champion leading the squad (skull champion)
Their transport w/ combi-melta on a pintle mount door gunner style.
The Death's Head is a brigade among the 4th Grand Company. These are individuals who have proven their thirst for combat to be near insatiable. They excel at close quarters combat & are hand to hand experts. These soldiers are send to the Death's Head Brigade where they're further trained as shock troops whose job is charge through holes made by heavier weapons & engage defenders on their own ground, typically the goal of such assaults is to wrest control of defensive weapons, controls for gates or command centers from defenders fighting w/ their backs to the wall. Their transports are usually built for rapid disembarkation w/ weapons meant to aid them in their assaults, usually either flamers for ensuring the defenses are pointless or melta guns for slagging bulkheads & security doors on bunkers. They proudly show the trophies of slain foes on their person & on their transports & wear death mask helmets to demoralize & intimidate their opponents.

Ok, next up are my Chosen
Squad Shot
Plasma gunners
Icon Bearer (built-in teleport homer)
Champion.
Missile Launcher
Many of these grizzled veterans have been fighting since the Heresy. As the years have passed, exposure to the warp has caused them to mutate & their limbs to become cloven hooves, tentacles, claws, etc. This is unacceptable for an Iron Warrior, so they sport more bionic limbs per unit than the rest of the average warband's units. Their mission is usually to infiltrate behind enemy lines & destroy key pieces of artillery, command & control assets or spiritual assets to demoralize enemies.
Gamewise they have the Icon of Nurgle, represented by their bionic limbs & the icon bearer having the teleport homer on his backpack.
The real challenge w/ these guys is gonna be painting the bionic limbs to stand out from their already metallic armor.

Raptors inbound!
Raptors tank hunter squad
Aspiring Champion
Meltagunners
There are those among the Iron Warriors whose sanity could be called into question due to their lack of regard for their own personal safety at all. It is these fighters who are inducted into the Raptor corps.
During the siege of Tarsus Secundus, the Raptors under the command of Iron Warsmith Mako voluntarily underwent suicide missions to destroy enemy emplacements & artillery batteries, paying no heed to the inherent risk of such missions. They were delivered by Dreadclaw pods or Thunderhawk gunships, both operating at cloud level & dropping the Raptors out of the hatches by cover of darkness. Waiting as long as possible to ignite their jump packs to avoid the thruster flare being seen, several died due to miscalculating their descent, however, at the end of the day, the crazed Raptors were successful more often than not at their surgical strikes.

I'm not a huge chaos fan (a loyalist at heart, you see ) but I like what you have going here! I really enjoyed the fluff for the converted "chimer-icators" I'd sure be okay with it! I like that you're doing so much conversion work as well. Nothing better than showing up at the FLGS and playing "guess the bits it used"
Do you have a paint scheme picked out yet?
A little CC: I think it's time to break out the GS and tidy up your conversions a little bit. Patching some gaps in the vehicles, your marine limb splices, etc. Oh, and drill out those barrels!
Good luck!

Thanks, I plan on GSing spots once I get some again. My LGS seems to always be out of it so I have to wait for it to come in an order & that can take up to 2-3 weeks sometimes.
If you look at the updated post for the chosen there's a test model w/ the paint scheme I plan to use. They're basically boltgun metal w/ mithril silver highlights w/ a copper/gold mix for aged gold trim on the armor. Of course, the yellow/black hazard stripes that are so common in Iron Warriors. Eye lenses are a light green. For the berzerkers the main difference for them will be that their helmets will be painted as skulls rather than metallic to add to the death's head motif.
As for gun barrels, I usually drill out my bolters, but I honestly can't get a hold of a drill bit small enough for the bolt pistols in this town (Klamath Falls, Oregon really sucks, I can't even have an android phone on my carrier here due to a lack of cell tower support for them )

Ok, tonight's update is my active denial unit, AKA Noise Marines.
Comprised of dark Tech Adepts who take great pleasure in tinkering, the Active Denial squads job is morale or rather destroying it in the enemy ranks. Utilizing sonic weapons capable of laying down varying frequencies of sound which disrupt the equilibrium of their targets.
Squad
Blast Master
Champion
Rhino
Deployed as mobile response units, the Active Denial squads were used exclusively to attack the flanks of the enemy lines where the portability of their weaponry combined with the lack of need for ammunition made them a force to be reckoned with.
I have tried to keep a themed in mind w/ each of my squads which I hope not only shows a little bit now but will continue to show as this blog progresses. All my squads have similar helmets & shoulder pads. In the case of the raptors all their helmets feature the T face look, more or less, to give them a more brutal look. The Adepts have the berzerker grilled helmets sans bunny ears & most have the techmarine shoulder pad. The Chosen feature Grey Knight terminator helmets aside from the champion who wears a battle damaged MKVI helmet, they have rimmed right shoulder pads & the skull face left shoulder pads which resembled the Iron Warriors Iron Mask chapter symbol (note this shoulder pad is also worn by my squad champions of all my squads). Obviously, the Death's Head brigadiers have the skull helmets including their champion who has a more sinister skull helmet mounting it's own trophy rack.

Ok, last of the unpainted stuff for the regular army, there will, inevitably, be more unpainted stuff for the apocalypse portion.
This is my Warsmith's bodyguard. Post photo update: I've built a 4th termie as a standard bearer (icon of slaanesh as the banner inspires them to fight better, hence the +1 I) & moved the combi-weapon to him, built a heavy flamer out of bitz to replace the combi-melta guy's weapon.
I've begun painting today, most of the infantry models & the armour have their basecoat of boltgun metal.

I like what you've done with your army - particularly the theming of the squads. I might use some similar ideas in my own (currently underdeveloped) IW army.

Thought I'd take a peek after your comment on my question today. Nice looking army. Makes me want to pull my CSM out of the storage locker, but I need to focus on the IG now. The custom Vindicators are pretty awesome. The rhino is great and some of your kit bashes just add that great original twist to the look of them all. The Ragnarok (Gwar inspired?) is pretty awesome too! 1 suggestion that I have. Please drill your barrels. You have a great paint job on them, but all I can see is guns with no holes for their bullets.

Oh I do plan on it, I just can't find drill bits smaller than 1/16" around here, what can I say, this town sucks. So I'm waiting on a pin vise for christmas to finish them up. I'll be posting pics of the 1750 army w/ display board that won the competition tomorrow or wed.
