Warmachine tables are 48x48. Each segment of these hills is 20 across,
combining to create one giant hill that was 40" total. I'm a sloppy craftsman,
so the hills don't necessarily come together perfectly, but the hills are not
so off that a model will fall in the gap. In addition, I was working really hard
not to oversize the top layers of the hill (also known as "Hillpocalypse") so
that they would line up. Once one layer is off, it throws the entire structure
of the hill off.
Each layer of hill is 1" foam, and they are segmented at 5" across. I cut
up 2'x4' paneling for basing because then I could use the pre-cut corners
in order to get true 90 degree angles for the base. If I can get my hands
on a circular saw, I'll probably make 4 middle segments for the hills so that
I can make them really crazy.
For scale purposes, the pics show a Vessel of Judgment Battle Engine (base
size...whatever the dimensions of a CD are) and Knights Exemplar Vengers
(50mm base cavalry).
I screwed up on one segment by not clamping it properly, so one corner
of one layer lifts a little. I hope to cover it with sand.
I intend to make a few more hills like this after playtesting on this one.
The funny thing with the koct hillpocalypse is that it's almost the opposite in
detail of a similar giant hill thing I made years ago. On the Valley of Felix
(as one local player calls it), I terraced each layer with a hobby knife. I
decided to go for a more vertical hill like I did with my trenches so that
top heavy warmachine models would have fewer issues attempting to
stand on the edges.
