What is feathering, please?

It looks pretty good, have you tried blending the colours in whilst they're still wet? Not something I often do myself, but it may work well on the larger area of the chitinous armour.

Feathering is when you take a very thin brush and lightly apply two ore the colors in streaks on the edge of the armored shell.

Well it all depends on how good you want it to look. I took about 20min to do that and its not that great compaired others.

You really need to use more intermediate highlights when feathering. From the photos it looks like you've only used three colours on the carapace, which gives it a very sharp and in-organic effect. Kudos for trying out a new technique though, just refine it and see where it gets you

Do you mean refine as More colors and fading?

yeah.

Feathering is used to help give a smooth transition from one colour to another. You seem to have the brush skills to use the technique properly, but not the eye for colours.

I say this in most of my posts, but i believe it is still good advice: Thin your paints more! Multiple thin coats really help when blending form one colour to another, be warned though that it requires a lot of patience

When i wanted to improve my painting, i decided that i would spend a couple of hours painting just one small part of a mini to see how well i could paint it if i really took my time.... the results showed me that i could paint far better than i thought i was able to.

Ok i will tyr again may be a while so lets see what happens thanks for the advice.

Skin is too dark for armor that is too light but with proper colors your feathering isnt too bad

You did a really good job for your first try! It looks like you missed a few spots on your model with the red paint, you can see lots of white spots on the skin, i think a red wash would fix that pretty fast.

Your feathering isn't bad, but your colors are off. You would probably get a better effect when starting feathering with colors that are closer to the color of the carapace itself. Then you can work up to potentially any color or tone you want.

Also, the mini in general looks quite saturated with bold colors. Bright red with deep blue aren't exactly complementary colors. Some areas with calmer colors would make other parts stand out more.

Although i must say, for tabletop army quality, your painting looks quite good, and the colors would at least make for an army that will stand out from the rest.

Nice job, I tried that once when i had nids, but just ended up with thick streaks of colour on the chitin shell

I disagree with the previous comments; colours (lightblue / off white) look fine to me. I'd probably use a couple more colours to get a smoother transition (intermediate mixes).

But way, way too thick. Need to be a lot thinner, your stroke should be toward the highlight (edge) and it should have a gradient to it, building up the colour in a several strokes. This gives a much smoother result (the stroke direction provides the texture).

Actualy A friend reccomended dipping on the carapace, so thats what im trying to do. I will post pics soon. Thank alot Alll!
